Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I have been working on sand blasting small parts for the last 3 week ends and started assembly on the front grill. I have a question on the plastic inserts the new one's don't sit flush like the OEM one did. the grill is a repo one.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
The guy doing the sheet metal work for me was involved in a car accident last week and I was not able to pick up my frame. He called me today and I can pick it up Saturday. I have to install the engine and transmission to fit the cross member and transfer case. Then I can get it powder coated hopefully next week.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I picked up my frame Saturday and reinstalled the dirty dingo engine mount. Sunday My nephew helped me set up transmission mount and install the transfer case. We had to re-clock it as I guessed At what I thought would work. custom fab up the transmission mount worked out great. Removed the engine, trans and t case so I can weld up the extra holes I don't need. The weather is going to make it difficult to weld as it could rain most of next week. No shop to roll the frame in at home. the garage is full of part and tools.

I know you don't see the frame but nice to have it finished and smoothed, well worth it.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
It looks great. I feel you on the rain. I'm about 2 hours north of you and this weather has been killing me. I also have a bare 4x4 frame in my driveway. I've been spending the past few weeks rebuilding the front dana 44. I would like to sandblast the frame but I can't get a long enough break from the rain. I'm tempted to roll it I. The garage and take an angle grinder with a wire wheel to the frame. As soon as I paint it. I can start building everything up. Good luck. All your work looks great !

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
With 6" lift and 36" you will be able to see parts of the frame. swanp rat I hope Santa brings your air compressor soon. I would be in trouble if I did not have a compressor.
The weather is looking better for this week I have a 4 day week end after Christmas and New years.8 days to get some work done. |

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I'm media blasting my door hardware and some of the plastic wheels on the window cranks are missing and I was wondering if they are repairable or do I have to replace the hole part. The pictures show the missing wheel and one that is ok.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I know they are out there and have replaced the rollers in other projects (used the bolt on style) this might be a lead. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=393033

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I jealous. Wish I would have just bit the bullet and put in a nv4500. Your mockup looks great. Very stout setup. Whatcha puttin on the frame to protect?

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I spent the last 3 week ends media blasting door parts and I wasted my time as I'm installing 72 door panels and looking on the vender web sites this last week end for some replacement part for my doors the 72 door panels are thicker and require longer shafts for the window and door handles to mount. Frustrating I wasted 3 week ends, blasting media materials and paint. 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

Don't you love cars & trucks!
Maybe you can finish the door hardware and sell it on?

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I forgot that when I picked up my 69 suburban I got an extra set of doors from a 72 burb. started removing the window and lock part cleaning and painting them. The shafts for 72 door panel are only 1/4" longer than previous years. good thing is I'm moving forward now. I should be getting my frame back from power coating next week. then I can start putting my truck back together. I stopped by Sky's shop this morning and final body work has begone. the bed is about half way with body work. I sold the LS 5.3 out of my 2004 Suburban and should have it stripped down by next week end and set aside the front, back seats for my truck. will see what other part I can use to finish off the build.
