Electric Car Components:

1. VCU - Vehicle Control Unit (the brain, the controller)
2. Inverter - since the batteries deliver Direct Current and the motor consumes Alternating Current, we need a box to translate DC to AC type of thing

Oh I hear you, but knowing the General it is going to be a $30K kit, and with electric vehicles being around for a decade now and thanks to texting and driving (looking at you soccer moms) there is a cheap abundance of electric and hybrid components filling up our junk yards already with most wreckers having no idea what they are sitting on, I mean I scored a dual electric motor transmission for $700 bucks, I bet GMs electric motors run 10x that easy

Ford is already selling their "Eluminator" e crate motor. All available units sold out the day it went on sale. $3900 for a 210kW (281hp) motor not including inverter or battery. I suspect GMs e crate will probably be around the same price.

If your two motors combined provide similar performance you have found a much more affordable alternative. Good work Greg. Thanks for sharing all the details. Can't wait to see it go!

thanks for the info and the price and specs, I didn't want to use the F word on this site, lol, wow $4K for the motor and no Inverter or battery, well we still need a battery charger as well, not sure if that is included with the cost of the battery

I am happy to report that the larger electric motor in my transmission is rated at 147 kW or 197 horse power, (remember that 750 watts equals 1 horse power) and don't forget there is another electric motor in there as well, ha ha so combined I am thinking 300 easy without even overvolting yet

Now how are you going to run your accessories. At min you need lights but I figure you will want ps pb wipers and a radio?

Excellent question, all electrical stays the same (lights, windshield wipers, etc) since we are keeping the regular 12 volt car battery (all electric cars retain a standard 12 volt car battery believe it or not), and we will be using a Converter instead of an alternator to charge it, the Converter steps down the 360 volts DC down to 12

we will use either a Volvo or some other brand of electric power steering pump, this is a very common swap, and keep our current stock steering box

we will use an electric vacuum pump to provide vacuum to our stock brake booster

the challenge will be the heater as it needs to be replaced with an electric element but there are a couple options for that as well

and what's a "radio"? lOl

Im not big in to electric vehicles, but Im not against them either. I think its a cool build you have going. Most of its over my head, but still cool =)

Instead of an electric PS pump, how about an electric PS unit from a saturn vue or another GM vehicle that can go in the steering shaft?

Yes sir, but you know me I take baby steps and work in phases, so first we may just get it running and driving and then regroup and do just what you suggested, sky's the limit.

One obstacle I think is that most of the true electric Power Steering giddy ups are for a rack and pinion setup and we have ourselves a 100 year old steerin' box.

but keep the ideas comin' and The Greg loves linky links, ha ha

thanks mate I had it spinin' last week, not braggin' just sayin' but since my laptop never showed me being in Park I thought I did something wrong, so I kept fumblin' with the Neutral Switch wiring, and testing, and testing, until I asked around the other folks who have done it, and they said, no worries mate the Laptop will never show you when it is in Park it only show's you when it is in Drive or Reverse

yup, I will never get the hours I lost to the transmission Safety Neutral Switch that week, ha ha

A friend of mine put on on his cougar big block ford powered race car and he said it works awesome. It has a conventional non power steering gear box on it too. Another friend put one in a 50s dodge truck that had a stock non power gear box and he said the same thing. I'm really considering one on my 40 Ford. No belt to mess with and one less thing to leak.

so the wife and I joke about doing just the opposite, leave the engine bay completely bare, drive the truck to a car show, park it, and pop the hood open, then bust out some lawn chairs and sit there for a few hours sipping some cold drinks, then at the end of the show, after everyone's walked by and taken a peak, shut the hood and drive off... [ahem] quietly
