Interesting. Thanks for sharing. As far as a 292 better than a 250, I guess the 292 is bigger and has more torque and power. 250's are more common though, maybe easier to find parts for. Guess I'm partial to the 250 as that's what I got in my truck. I think the 292 looks too tall and bulky compared to the 250.
Any other opinions?

I have one of each currently. I've owned a few 250s over the years and one 292.

The big difference to me is the ultra-long stroke of the 292. It makes its torque peak at 1800 (!) rpm. The long stoke also means that spinning that engine up to higher rpm results in a really high piston speed. This can put large loads on the main/rod bearings.

So, to me, the 250 is a little "sportier" than a 292. I try to keep the rpm down on my 292 and use it like it was designed: a low-end grunter.

I have no 250 experience, so my view is admittedly biased. I really like the 292 over the V8s. I have a crate Mr Goodwrench 350 in a '71 [K/5] Jimmy and once ran a 454 in a '67 K/10 Suburban. My '68 C/10 Stepside w/ L6 292 has better torque that the stock BBC, and better acceleration than the stock 350. It's also lighter: ~125# less than the SBC and ~200# under the BBC.
The 454 had an iron intake and iron exhaust manifolds and a 625 CFM Carter AFB. The 350 has Heddman headers, a Weiand intake and a Carter 600 CFM AFB. The 292 is bored .030-over, has oversize intake valves [307 V8=1.86], a Crane cam 260H, Badger cast pistons, and Offy 4V intake, Clifford headers, and a 500 CFM Edelbrock 4 Bbl "Performer" [AFB clone]. It's the original engine, rebuilt once. So it may be unfair to compare a hand built engine with 2 stock factory engines. My last L6 engine, a '67 292 block, I built in 1977-- it ran 25 years and 250,000 miles. It was bored .030 over, but other wise stock [or OEM "heavy duty" parts from the dealer.] I ran the same intake and Clifford [Research] headers and a Holley 390 CFM. After a 500 mile break-in on the new engine, the Holley gave up the ghost, and I went with the Edelbrock.
From my perspective-- running and gunning 292s since 1973, in contrast to Mr Slick, the 250 looks too small.

Of course! "the 250 looks too small" To each their own. But like Mr Sunshine and Shaky said the 292's are meant to have more torque, and are great for pulling/hauling. 250's are good all around especially DD (not that a 292's not). And either is gonna be a heck of a lot lighter than a V8. Inline 6's ROCK!!

I got a little bit of a start on my build today. I put my new timing gear on the crank and got the cam in, then ran into a little snag.





I was going to check the mains with Plastigage, but all I had was too small, and besides it was way too brittle. It's pretty old, so I figured I'd just get some new that's the right size. Then I got to thinking that maybe it was brittle because of how cold it is in my shop, so I decided to get some propane, too, and be all ready for next weekend.

Oh yeah, I got my damper back from Damper Doctor, so I'm all set.

I bought a 250 inline 6 5 years ago i'm planing on putting it in a 1968 longhorn the truck with the 8 1/2 foot bed.I'm converting it to a 1/2 ton just got the stock spindles from a 1973--87 chevy 1/2 ton changing the upper and lower ball joints the truck came with a 396 and 400 auto it came with factory AC and power steering will be adding power brakes and 3.73 posi rear end and putting a 700R4 or a 200R4 in it.Leaving it stock but putting in a cd player in the dash.A guy on eBay is selling a aftermarket brackets for the AC unit so you can run the HEI for 139 plus 15.00 shipped you have to use the different Compressor but i like to have the AC in the truck.

At one time thought i always run the 350 or 327 but with gas going up as much as it has i like to have a nice one to just enjoy
