Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

Man, I need a sanding slave! Started on the doors, inside and back of the cab. There is a L O T of unflat crooked contorted, I will drive you nuts when sanding surfaces on these trucks.

Maybe get the first round of 2K primer on it next weekend and do some more blocking.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

My new tank from FuelCellGuy arrived this week, so I set it into place. Just temporary, but it gets it off the floor and I got to see what she looks like. Thanks Mark, the thing came out great.

I also picked up a new bumper from a guy at one of our local swap meets. He had a step and went fleet, so the bumper never made it onto his.

Pretty tame other than more sanding. Hopefully this weather will break soon so I can spray.

Looking good Bill!! When we have the heat we can't wait for the cold and visa versa. There's just no making us happy is there. J/K I don't think there is a slow enough reducer to spray in this heat.

I think the primer will dry before it even hits the panel with the heat like it is.

It was doing that when we sprayed the blazer....primer was dry as soon as he sprayed and cleaned out the gun.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

I finished my side project (rebuilding a rusted-out grill for our squadron) and had some time to get on the truck again. Since the bed has no side markers, I decided to make filler plates for the front marker holes. It had to adjust my self back from the 11 gauge steel to good old sheet metal. I forgot and blew the first patch I made out. (I refuse to show how dumb I was )

Anyways, here is the front fenders with patches after two passes and some cleaning up of the welds. I am going to try and finish it tomorrow and start the filler work.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

Not a lot done (thanks to soccer season), but I was able to finish up the work at filling in the front side markers. A little rattle can primer to hold it together till she get shot with good primer for the blocking.

Unfortunately no. Life, work, and now my 83 is down too, so the 70 will be in even slower motion.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

Been a LONG time since I had touched the 70. As seen by the first picture, it has pretty much been tucked away. Just didn't realize is been 7-8 months since I did anything.

I did acquire a set of 78 spindles, brakes and calipers to put on the old girl, but today was going backwards again. I had stole the T350C from her back in September for my 83, now today I yanked the crate 350 out of her to use in my 83 also. Just could not see buying another new crate when I already had a new one here and the 70 is still a couple years from being on the road, so out she came today.

Not sure what will come next, another engine or go ahead an install the disk brakes onto the ole girl.

Anyone, not much but I did get dirty today for a change.

I had to modify it a bit as it would not hold an engine with a flywheel/flexplate still attached. Basically I made it so the nubs flr the bell housing slide into a slot and you only have the lower bolt to hold the rear of the engine.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

Sometimes I can't figure out what happens either

My truck was driven all over heck in 2010. At least 3,ooo miles that year. In 2011 I drove it maybe 5 or 6 times the entire year. My driveshaft yoke became grooved and it was pissing out a quart a week on the floor, I tried a new seal but the groove was too deep. I pulled the driveshaft back in November to buy a new yoke and have it balanced... it's still sitting in the bed of my Z71.

Bill, I never have looked at your '70 build thread until now, but I'd definitely say she has come along way. It's really looking good, man. Can't wait to see it when the cab is painted.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

OK, the commercial break is over.

Here is what I have been working on for the 70's new power source. I was thinking about going back to an original 250, but knew I would need all the accessory brackets, which are getting harder to find. I cam across a deal on a decent running power plant. Since the plan for the 70 is a decent cruiser I decided to somewhat duplicate Whitey (my 02 DD) , but without the computer stuff.

The new power plant is a Vortec 4.3 V6. It is currently equipped with a Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock 500 CFM 4bbl carb. It was being used in a Toyota 4x4 pickup and when he went to 4o something tires he decided that he wanted a bigger motor. The engine ran pretty strong in the truck and is different that what you would normally see in one of our model trucks.

Since the 70 was already setup for late model motor mounts I slipped the V6 in place. It bolted right in (used V8 not V6 motor mounts), but there was lots of space between firewall and engine.

I figured I would do like the 88 and newer do and move the engine stands back some.

My measurements on the later models had it setting back around 3 to 4 inches (seems different years it changed a hair) . I decided to use 3 so it wouldn't create a tight fit for the distributor and our firewalls.

The top bracket was just merely sliding it back so the front mount hole uses the 6 cylinder stand holes and drilling a new back hole. I built a bracket to help provide extra support for the rear of the stand. GM did the same but instead of 2 inch heavy gauge angle, they used formed sheet metal to make the extenders. I feel mine should more that handle the load (abuse?). I had to drill one new hole in the cradle to bolt it all together.

Re: "Will it Ever Get Done?"

Engine in place. A friend has a 700R4 that I can use behind it. For now I just have an old short case T350 bolted to it. I am not sure whether I will go with another T350 (long tail) or the 700R4 yet.

Anyways, I hope it's not too sacrilegious using a V6 in her. At least I stayed with GM power

I see nothing wrong with a V6 , Prob has more horse and torque than the V8s that came in that year truck . No towing the 700 with the OD will fuel mileage better
