welded would look cleaner...you could plug weld the bolt holes then weld the edge and grind smooth...

Any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe heating the control arm?

Re: Project: "Home Grown"

I wouldn't heat the arms... might have to make a tapered block to use?

I think we may try an air hammer on it, will likely destroy the ball joint but oh well.

Does anyone know how to tear down these damn arms? I want to get them powder coated a different color but I cant seem to see how to get the shaft out of the arm? I am thinking it was likely pressed in originally?

Nope, the shafts are threaded on both ends. put the shaft in a big vise and unscrew the ends

Re: Project: "Home Grown"

We disassembled a set about a year and a half ago to make delrin bushings for them so they would be compatible with the Dropmember... the bushings are in there pretty tight. They will eventually come out with a lot of effort and even more patience.

Did u use a press to get them out? I called thorbros today and the guy said if i could get em apart I likely wouldn't get em back together. This is not want I wanted to hear. I don't want my arms black, although it may work.

Re: Project: "Home Grown"

Looking at the break down photos of these arms it would seem that all I need to do is press them out one end, remove the bushing and repeat, maybe I should grease them up to get them to slide easier? I wonder if a little heat would help out as well?

i would try to cool them rather than heat them, stick them in the freezer for a couple of hours and try it ?? it wont cost anything to try maybe it will work maybe not?

Hmm, that is a good idea, maybe it will make the poly a little more rigid and will stop it from gripping on the metal. I have a freezer here at work

Re: Project: "Home Grown"

Or I just leave the damn things black, the cross member will be a charcoal, and so will the spindles, the arms could be black along with the frame. So it will kinda flow decent. Any thoughts?

I just don't want to destroy these arms to only for powder, plus I would save a few bucks not needing to powder them

Me too.. (leave them black) Sorry to hear that the arms are a PITA.. I didn't realize that they were so difficult to tear down.

Not your fault man! I bet I can still get em apart, just don't want to make it a nightmare, besides once inner fenders are installed, who will really notice the arms anyways?

Re: Project: "Home Grown"

We didn't care about the bushings or the shafts in our case, as they weren't going to be re-used in our application. It was a bit of work. One of the bushings didn't survive. And we ended up cutting the cross-shaft in pieces on the second arm to save time.

I would recommend to leave them as is, rather than risk damaging something that they aren't "currently" building anymore. Black will flow just fine with the chassis.

Yeah, I think it makes most sense, I will rock these until the next itch when I go for a drop member, at that point I will just get your arms, and with the correct wheel centering Now to just get that damn lower ball joint out, but I bet that will be easier! Although still hard.

What is everyone's favorite brand to use for ball-joints? I was thinking of using Moog.
