It sure does look awesome to not have the HVAC box under the hood! Your truck looks really sweet and clean. I feel for you in trying to keep it that way once you start driving it. No slam intended.

I had a good look at your engine bay....which is by the way pure eye candy! and I never knew one could route twin turbo's like this...isnt there a risk of one turbo pushing or pulling the other one? or do they sell these like a perfectly tuned couple? Never seen this before, su just curious

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

Thanks guys!
Yea the twins come as a tuned towing package for low end boost.
Sorry i didn't get back right away with more pics, been busy cleanin out grain bens.
Been spending most my time on the mountain of wiring, i'm slowly but surly gettin closer

It was a lot of work hiding all the wiring and tucking everything away neatly but well worth it! Gives the engine bay the nice clean simple look i'm going for

Holy smokes there's just a little wire in there! The white loom is cool man but I think some white tape would clean it up even more on the ends and where you split into other runs. An electrical supply joint should have some Scotch brand phase tape that is high quality. Love this build!!

Thanks I never thought of using tape instead, i'll see what I can find.

Got the gauges done yesterday! I had some custom overlays made to match the autometers, then painted the needles and trim to match. Turned out great i'm really happy with them.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

I ordered them from whitegauges.net They can make anything you want they're awesome! but pricey for custom stuff..
The overlays arn't perfect but from 2 feet away you'll never notice.
I also bolted the rpm gauge to the console shifter, made some good use of it anyway..

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

Did you have to cut the floor pans down to use the Ford seats? Do you have any interior pics? I am going to try and use the King's Ranch seats in my crew and was wondering how much work was involved. Thanks a ton!!

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

nope i didn't have to cut the floor pans, kept them original in case i wanted to throw the bench seats back in. For the front seats I just drilled new holes, modified the brackets a bit and they bolted right in, but the rear seats were not easy. I welded in plates across the pan that matched the bolt pattern on the seats. Wish these truck cabs were just slightly longer, not much rear leg room.. I thought about using my parts cab to make this a mega cab or 6 door but didn't want to sacrifice turning radius. I don't have any recent pics but there should be some in the beginning of this tread somewhere

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

Been workin like crazy on the little white giant, finally took it on it's first voyage last night! Drove it to town, rode like a wet dream! Got to the bar and there was coolant leakin inside and outside, oil puked everywhere, and the shut off solenoid shorted out internally..
Everything was fine on the first little test spin but then again it never got real warm and rpms stayed pretty low.
Got her back to the shop last night and this morning i fixed most of the oil leaks, still have a few, and all the coolant leaks. Regular hose clamps are not strong enough for steel braided lines.
Took it back out for about half n hour today, rides like a half ton and steerings like a golf cart, but my left leg is going to be twice the size of my right! Gears are tricky to find, the new shift forks are pretty tight but float in and out pretty easy with no clutch.
I noticed boost would only climb to 20psi at first and as i drove it boost would climb higher with every few spools. I'm still takin it easy yet but i'm guessing the turbos won't fully spool until they're broken in.. Again i'm still a greenhorn here.. Last night was the first time i've ever driven a cummins powered pickup..
Anyway heres a few pics after i washed the pig up on my lawn, i still have quite a few things to button up so don't get too nit picky on me lol

It looks awesome! Are your gauges on your dash pad hard to see? Your turbos shouldn't require any "Break in". You may want to check for boost leaks or check to see what your waste gate(s) are set at. If your fueling is too low that can add to low boost as well.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

Hey i'm back, Thanks guys!
I think they're getting plenty of fuel, lots of black smoke with the pump turned up. I'm hitting 45 psi now, actually blew a clamp off the other night.. How do I check where the waste gate is set at? Or for leaks when it's not under boost?..

So I only have 30 miles on the truck and it started leaking oil real bad from the front of the motor. One step forward is always 2 steps backward with this thing. As it turns out the bolt came loose for the fan pulley and wore through the timing gear cover! The gears look to be ok, but the cover is junk which was customized for the adjustable pump gear cover.. So I had to dip back into my savings and buy a billet timing gear cover from ZRM Enterprises.. Hopefully it'll be here before we leave for Scheid next week.. I would like to get more miles on it before the long haul..

Dang that stinks! To check your waste gate you need to use an air pressure regulator and hook shop air to it. Start at 0 and adjust the regulator slowly until you see the actuator move. Make sure you are able to watch the air pressure gauge on the regulator while observing the actuator. Do you have internal or external gates, I can't remember?

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

There's an internal waste gate on the smaller turbo and nothing on the larger one, but i'm guessing the smaller phatshaft needs to open up when the larger s474 spools up. I try calling industrial injection but I can never reach anybody.. A few threads on the cummins forum said they had to drive a couple hundred miles before the turbos were broke in? I've never heard that before. What are you running for boost on your set up?

I wouldn't believe what most of those guys on cummins forum say. There are bronze bushings and chrome moly sealing rings in the turbo center section as well as a bronze center bearing and a steel sleeve the turbine shaft goes through. These pieces may loosen up after some wear, but I wouldn't call that break in per say. S300's all seem to become pretty loose compared to holsets and garretts from what I've noticed. Haha Anyhow, You should still be getting the normal amount of boost from the secondary unless they have some monster turbine housing on it. If it's a phat shaft is it a 64/71 or a 62/71 and do you know if it is a .80 or .83 ar? The turbos I have on my car, the secondary is gated to start opening at 20psi and have it fully open at 25psi. It'll still make over 70psi not WOT with the modified 75mm GT4294. I'd first try to see what your internal gate is set at and make sure you have no boost leaks. Make sure you have o-rings on your compressor housing outlets as well.
