Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Front Dana 44

Got a bunch of the front '79 Dana 44 rebuilt and gears changed out. Did bearings, seals, u-joints, and 3.73 gears. The gears got set on third try.
The main axle was powder coated gloss black, and spindle, backing plates semi-gloss. (the backing plates were originally gold cad with black paint on them). Using Warn Premium hubs, as they look kind of original '64 ish, per 61K10 build. Working on rebuilding calipers next.

Note: The last photo shows the original '64 Dana 44, that is stored away, to be reinstalled later.

Les--the later brake hoses must mount different as they are only a little less than 19". so look on rock auto as they have pics and the specs.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Jr West Coast Mirror Differences in Arms

Have two pair of GM Jr West Coast Mirrors with different arm length that extends from the cab. Do not know why the differences. Have checked three other trucks and they have the shorter arms. Will check truck that had longer arms. It may be a Forest Service Fleet truck, special order? Except for arm difference, the whole mirrors are exactly the same, the arms are both consructed exactly the same. They both also have the thin rubber film on the inside of the clamp that attaches to them.

1/2 vs 3/4 ton?

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Got two more pick-up loads of powder coated parts. I like the process used to clean the parts as it does not open up the pores on the metal, like abrasive methods. Still have the frame and cab to pick up, along with a few other parts, like the BA hood. Just my option, for powder coating, really like the quality you get from commercial/industrial companies. Believe their equipment and quality control is good.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

a few more photos. Maybe get the frame and cab later this week. Working on the bolts, brackets, clips this week, along with parts that did not get powder coated, because the have rotating/moving parts, that are difficult to take apart.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

On the non powder coated parts, ones that move, using a very thin ceramic film/coating, that is very hard along with high abrasion resistance.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

64 K10 Front Spring Frame Rear Shackle Removed

One of the front spring rear shackle bolts was stuck in the frame bushing, and now have it removed. Used Kimble's advice for how he removed a stuck one from his '61 K10. Lube it with penetrating fluid, and keep doing till it loosened up. I used Kroil oil, along with two grade 8 bolts bottomed out on the treads, socket covering both and long breaker bar. Not sure how many foot-lbs of torque used on breaker bar, probably between 80 and 100 ft-lbs. Just kept applying force in one direct, then the other. It finally started to move a little, more back and forth, and it finally came out. All the time adding Kroil oil on the threads and through the internal port.

The next to last photo shows the oil used, and internal port in the bolt/pin.

The last photos shows the threaded frame bushing and the threaded bolt/pin that fits inside the bushing. Will show detailed photos of whole front spring shackles soon as put back together.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Looks good Les!! I wish i could of had my frame power coated, but had no trailer to trans port it, and too cheap to rent one lol. glad you got the shackle pin out, mine was the same way. after i cleaned the sleeve that the pin screws into, it was in good shape. It had the same amount of movement as the new pin and sleeve. I did use a new pin though.

What rear bumper are you going to use?

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

Kimble,

Rear bumper will be a dealer installed step bumper. It is from a North Texas Chevy dealer, with their name embossed into it. Bob Tedford Chevrolet in Farmersville, near Dallas, Greenville and McKinney, TX. Only know this from internet search. When truck is done will have to send them a photo. I found the bumper here in KY, from a person stationed at Ft Knox.

On the front spring rear shackle did the same as you. Original bushing/sleeve cleaned up nice, and did use two new pins in the frame.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

A couple of photos of the front spring, rear shackle and bushing assembly.
Photos below;
1). just overall image of spring parts;
2). the front spring rear shackle parts, it shows the pin installed in the threaded bushing/sleeve that goes in the frame. Mine were ok so did not replace them. The parts are the pin/bushing, rubber gasket, lock washer, nut, and two shackles. Note: the pin has tapered shaft where the shackle fits on it, and the shackle holes are tapered too, to fit the pin.
3). show the pin partially screwed into the frame bushing. Will try to work on my photogaphy to eliminate glare!!
4). shows the pin installed; and
5). shows the rubber gasket installed.

Next the metal shackle is installed onto the pins tapered shaft, followed by lock washer and nut.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed

In the front spring rear eye, installed all the parts on one side, as this allowed me to use the nut as a way to turn the pin into the spring eye threaded bushing. Next placed the spring with shackle onto the frame pin, installed lock washer and nut. Through out the install used lots of grease on both threads, along with lots of grease through the grease fitting. Making sure the bushing and pin threads were full of grease, to ensure minimal wear of these parts. Regular greasing will be needed as truck is driven.

Rockwell T221 Transfer Case '64K10

Worked on duplicating the color for the T221 transfer case, and came up with a mixture of two paints that matches the original color. First three photos are of new paint job.

The below photos show other transfer case mounting parts.
