Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
I sold my 68 C20 GMC with the 454 big block motor and my 72 K20 Light Olive with yellow roof truck to a member out in Kansas. He is already doing a great job freshening up the C20 with a new interior. Then we have the issue of Bestview sending me pictures of some nice trucks out there for sale in my area.
Bought a 69 K20 that is all there with cab lights and a build sheet still intact. Also purchased a 1970 Olive K10 that is all original paint and a really good running driving truck. I will be selling the 69 K20 soon, and be doing some minor cleanup on the K10 and driving it. Picts 1,2 are the 69 K20 Picts 3,4 are the 70 K10

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Thanks again, Kenny!
Worked on the passenger's side both Saturday and Sunday. Filling, sanding, glazing, priming, rinse and repeat.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Sunday afternoon got the passenger side into filler primer again. The first coat was to just hit the areas that were repaired. Second and third coats to cover everything again. I let it cook in my heated garage overnight and was able to block everything out on Monday evening. Next up will be to get the truck spun around again and get the garage ready to finally put color on the bedsides.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Got ready to paint and found a few items I missed while prepping for color. I had three areas on the inside bed rails and two small areas on driver's side lower front bed apron.

Thanks, it has been a fun project. The GMC with cab lights will be going up for sale soon. Thinning the herd over the next couple of months.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Finished up the areas for painting on the bed and now waiting for rain to pass so I can push the Devil outside while the bed gets color. I put the hood back up on the stand so I can get that ready while waiting on better weather.
Hood was in pretty good shape. It had a few high spots and a few issues with oil canning over two of the support areas. I attacked the oil canning by using the stud gun in those areas without using the studs. I addressed the high areas by coloring over them with a jumbo black Sharpie marker, then sanding over the marker areas with a hard sanding block with 220-grit paper. It really helps to show the problem areas. Addressed most of that with dolly and hammer, and a slapping spoon.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Just about wrapped up with the hood. Need to get a couple of coats of filler primer on it and block it, then color. The large area on the passenger side of the hood had several high spots and a few low spots, oil canning, and waves like the sea. I did my best to shrink the area down by using the stud gub without studs and then cooling with a wet rag. It was a challenging spot that I worked on over three days, and now I feel like we got it. The use of long sanding boards, guide coat to reveal the lows and highs, and a boatload of patience. This produced a large amount of filler dust while slowly blocking with long boards.
The last picture is material being cut out to build a grill guard for the Devil. The grill guard underneath was removed from another K10 I own so I could use as a template and build exact replication. The main metal is 1.5 inch wide by 3/8 inch thick, the vertical bars are 1.2 x 3/8, and the vertical mounts outside are 2 inches wide. Had a few sets bent up of the ends at the fabrication shop my son works for.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Finally was able to get the truck out of the garage at 5:30 am this morning, cleaned up the garage, mopped the floor, taped everything off, and sprayed some color.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
That looks awesome! A friend of mine in high school had a blue 71 K10 that was this color. It was so clean with minimal options but had a 4" lift and 33s. It was such a nice truck. I never cared for that color until he got that truck.

Yes, one of the K10 trucks I bought last year had a nice grill guard on it. So I decided to have a few sets of the corners bent up at the fabrication shop my son works at. Then purchased enough material to build a couple of them using the one from my K10 as a template. The entire grill guard is made of 1 1/2 x 3/8 and 1 1/4 x 3/8 flat bar. The only part that needs to be bent is the corners.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
The next day, after spraying the bed, I was able to move the winch from the gantry and bolt it down to the floor so I could drag the Devil back into the garage again and drop the bed onto the frame for the last time. Was a quick and painless one-man operation with the remote on the winch.
After that, I worked on the bottom half of the hood, stripping off paint around the edges, and then treated the bottom with Ospho. Ospho converts rust to black iron phosphate, so it is ready to paint. In this case, we will use bed liner if there is enough left over from doing the bed, or at least spray with 3M undercoating.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
I knocked down the SEM high-build primer once more with 240-grit wet and dry on a DA sander with soapy water to get it ready for a few coats of black DTM high-build primer. While that was drying, I pulled out the tailgate to see what needed to be done to get it ready for color. On the tailgate backside, we are just trying to knock out some of the big uglies so it can also get sprayed with bed liner and look halfway decent..
The hood and the tailgate will be the last items to get painted, wrapping up the painting on the project. There is light at the other end of the tunnel!

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Spent the morning doing one more round on the backside of the tailgate. While the filler was drying, I removed driver's side fender to adjust the door slightly up and forward. Also needed to do this because I usually put doors on with unpainted hinge bolts. Then once I get it the way I want I change out bolts one at a time with painted ones. I use the fingers from latex gloves over head of bolt to help retain the paint on the heads.
Then I worked on getting the last few items ready for under the hood wrap up. Need to plug in the new engine wiring harness, mount the alternator, install the belts and new hoses.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
Finalising the last of the wiring modification, like adding the Auxiliary battery harness, heavy-duty front light relay, and extending the alternator wiring to cross over the top of firewall to the alternator on the passenger side. Picked up a few 3/8 by 4" carriage bolts for bolting down the bed and organising a few more items stuffed away in boxes that go on the Devil. Scheduled the front windshield install, since over the years I broke a few attempting to install and dont need that happening with one that gets the stainless steel trim.
Pic 1 - shows the new shoulder bolt and connection to the NP205 transfer case Pic 2 - shows the install of the chrome transfer case shifter and custom shift plate Pic 3 - extending the alternator wiring to cross-over firwall to passenger side Pic 4 - auxiliary battery harness install Pic 5 - install of the passenger side windshield washer bracket and the heavy duty headlight relay system Items in RED are completed. Under Hood/Engine -install new engine wire harness -install front wire harness -alter for relay to headlights -alter for alternator being on opposite side -lengthen brake booster wire -mount alternator -mount dual battery wiring harness -build heavy duty battery cables -install tilt steering column to power steering -block off extra water outlet on water pump -install all belts -install all hoses -install wire management for spark plugs -install starter Transmission -install braided lines to radiator for cooling -install modulator hoses --install torque converter bolts to pressure plate -double check fluids NP205 -install chrome gear shift -install boot and custom shift plate -install small cotter pin on shift linkage with washer -front and rear driveshaft -double check fluids Front and Rear Axles -paint hubs -drain and install new fluids -install new axle shafts on passenger side front -finish hooking up parking brake in rear Exhaust -finish hangers -install rear down tubes Interior -install seat -install seat belts -install headliner -install woodgrain items -install handles -finish tilt column -install steering wheel -install mirror -install sill plates -install door rubber Body -paint hood -paint tailgate and hardware -shoot bed liner -treat bottom of hood with bedliner or 3M undercoat -Trim refurbish and install -bolt down bed -install windsheild -install back window -install outside mirrors -build and install grill guard -install bumpers

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
I have been working on some small items, like bending up a new gas line that goes through bottom of cab, changed out the old key chrome bezel with a newly purchased one. Then knocked out a few more areas on the hinges before painting, installing the visors and prepped and re-coloured the worn and browning visor clips.
Out of all of those items, the visor clips gave me the most issues. I went through the typical steps of cleaning with soap, roughing up a little with a gray Scotchbrite for a better paint bite. Sprayed with adhesion promoter and a few coats of SEM color. After a few hours curing, I went back to it and it had all kinds of fisheyes on the large surface area that you see. According to the TPS, you need to wait 24 hours of cure time before sanding or doing anything else with it. So the following morning, I stripped it of all the color, wiped it down with some alcohol and a round of wax and grease remover. Then treated with an adhesion promoter, and then sprayed again with color. After each coat, I slightly hit the piece with a heat gun to help set it. Finally, after three tries, I can mount it in the cab. Items in RED are completed. Under Hood/Engine -install new engine wire harness -install front wire harness -alter for relay to headlights -alter for alternator being on opposite side -lengthen brake booster wire -mount alternator -mount dual battery wiring harness -build heavy duty battery cables -install tilt steering column to power steering -block off extra water outlet on water pump -install all belts -install all hoses -install wire management for spark plugs -install starter Transmission -install braided lines to radiator for cooling -install modulator hoses --install torque converter bolts to pressure plate -double check fluids NP205 -install chrome gear shift -install boot and custom shift plate -install small cotter pin on shift linkage with washer -front and rear driveshaft -double check fluids Front and Rear Axles -paint hubs -drain and install new fluids -install new axle shafts on passenger side front -finish hooking up parking brake in rear Exhaust -finish hangers -install rear down tubes Interior -install seat -install seat belts -install headliner -install woodgrain items -install handles -finish tilt column -install steering wheel -install mirror -install sill plates -install door rubber -install visors and recolor the plastic holders -install new key bezel Body -paint hood -paint tailgate and hardware -shoot bed liner -treat bottom of hood with bedliner or 3M undercoat -Trim refurbish and install -bolt down bed -paint and install hood hinges -install windsheild -install back window -install outside mirrors -build and install grill guard -install bumpers

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
A few more items were started the next day, and a few more were completed. So one of the items that I wanted to get out of the way before re-installing the seat was to get the brand new from LMC headliner and headliner trim installed. A few months back, I re-colored it with the used door panels so that everything would look fresh and the same tones. When I flipped over the headliner I noticed that the material it was made out of had a waxy surface on the back. I did a little head scratching and knew that I would have to get that removed before any glue or adhesive product would work. Just to test my theory I had some super strong 3M double stick trim tape to test with. I tried to get a small piece to stick and that was a no-go.
Did some poking around and found somewhere on the interweb that the headliner backing was ABS and the back needed to be sanded to get rid of some of the waxy mold release so it can be installed. I grabbed some sandpaper and went to town on it. Now that it was ready for install, I thought it would be cool to write a little note to Kenny AKA "Bestview" here on the forum. I grabbed the closet paint marker I had on the table and wrote a little appreciation note. Grabbed the 1.5 inch Velcro and spaced it out about every 6 inches. Tied a few pieces of string through the windshield opening and the rear window opening so that I could suspend the headliner up in the area where it needed to be installed. Then I put a few pieces of blue tape to mark the center line on the front and back, as well as the center line on the cab. Climbed in and it went super smooth and installed in about 1 minute. Installing the headliner trim was a pain in the ASS. The crews sent for the Center areas of trim were way to short. The design of the clips really sucked also. What I did to make it a little easier was to add tape to the trim part where the clips were on backside and also tape on cab with marks to know where the openings and the screw holes were. Again no fun, but it is done and it looks good.

Worked on a few more small items at the end of the day. Removing the non-painted door bolts one at a time and replacing with freshly painted ones. Again, I just cut off the fingers from the latex gloves and pulled them over the socket so I can tighten them down without messing up the paint. Then fitted some of the rubber to the doors, cleaned up the dusty sill plates, and installed the door bumpers top and bottom.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"
More very nice work. I have some ospho but haven't used it yet. Do you do anything to the ospho after its cured? It always looks very rough in pics etc. That glove finger trick is a good one. I'm going to start using that. Thank ya!
