Me neither, but it sure looked like somewhere in LA. I spy a round fender hay hauler coming at us.

Cool Re: GM Semis

How about a visually appealing General? photographed outside of the Pontiac medium duty truck plant. I think the General in this photo looks a lot better with dual air cleaners instead of the one you usually always see them with. I do not have any facts on this but, I read on another group that this possibly had the 8v92 unfortunately with an Allison.

Dual breathers hide the hood/cab break nicely.

Very true. And that's an area that bugs me a bit on these trucks. I know there is a lot of cab sharing in big rigs but that area makes it obvious cabovers and conventionals share. Not as bad as the COE/conv cabs with doors that show it off on other, newer, trucks. That General is set up nicely in many ways (except the automatic)

The General's cab was based in part on the Astro 95's, but it is still narrower. Doors share a lot of parts but the early Astro's had the latch mounted on the 'B' pillar (one of those 'why did GM do that?' deals). I agree that the General would have looked a bit better had the hood been as wide as the cab, but that would have made it hard to mount those big Donaldson air cleaners. And wider cabs make the truck nicer to drive.

That thing sure has a lot of fuel on board!

Re: GM Semis

Bob,

I don't believe they put any 12V-92's in the General or Bison. If I'm correct, was that because of fuel mileage back in the mid '70's?

The 12V-92 was not offered in the General or Bison. Fuel economy, or lack thereof, would certainly have been a factor. But, I think the main reason was no regular highway transmissions at the time would have stood up to a 12V-92. Size and weight were probably a factor as well. Unlike a 12V-71, a 12V-92 has 4 cylinder heads and a longer heavier block. It just wasn't a highway engine.

I dont believe I've seen a 12v92 in any highway truck.
These fellers did 16v71 in a cab over.

Great looking truck.

Cool idea to have Mirrors on the Guide Poles. My '62 had the Poles, but no Mirrors.

As much as I like the Trucks and I wouldn't mind the Corvette, I'll take the '62 Impala. Hopefully it's a 409, 4-Speed, lol.

If it was anything like today.
All totalled by the rail liability.

Good thing for gm- sold units no warranty required.

Wonder if wrecking yards got a chance to purchase these totaled vehicles or if they scrapped or parted out by GM. Lot of very good like new parts still on them.

Every derailment I've been around.
All get smashed or buried depending on the logistics

Re: GM Semis

Would have been great parts trucks for sure.

They were all '66 or '67's.

Looks like the Red one could have been a Toro-Flow.

OEMs "sell" each vehicle as soon as it leaves the factory. Once loaded onto a rail car, truck, or ship, it is the property of the transporter. They "own" it on paper and are responsible for safe delivery. Of course they have lots of insurance to cover transportation, flood, hail, vandalism, etc. Likewise, each Dealer takes delivery from the transporter and then "owns" it until a private customer come along and removes it from their lot.

So, the OEM never gets involved in damaged vehicles after they leave the factory. Generally salvage yards buy all this kind of stuff from the carrier's insurance company. Whether they can be rebuilt or used for parts is probably a case-by-case situation. As you said, a lot of good parts to had there. There are probably some laws about salvage titles. A customer would want to know the complete story behind their new zero-mileage car that maybe is not all that new.

I recently passed an auto salvage yard in Long Beach, CA right next to the docks where ships discharge cars coming from Asia. That day they were using fork trucks to unload dozens of brand new cars with body damage on every side. They had been on a ship that was caught in a BAD storm and had all slammed into each other on the decks. They get tied down to the deck but it's not real tight and they park them close together to maximize space. It's a risk they take and sometimes lose.

I've also heard stories of rail cars in Mexico getting broken into by groups who dismantle the autos while riding in the enclosed rail cars. At designated spots they throw wheels, seats, air bags, etc off to other groups on the ground.
