Drew, My daily driver is a 72 body on a 02 Dodge (because I wanted a cummins) chassis. I used the Dodge instrument cluster by mounting it in a extra glove box door. I cut the back out (the doors are double wall), then cut the hole for the guages in the outer wall. I then welded some mounting studs to the back of the outer wall to hold the guages then sent it out to have the outer edge chromed (like the outer edge of the original plastic ones are). When I got it back I installed a woodgrain decal (my trucks a super) & trimmed out the guage opening with small flexable plastic chrome edging (think door edge guard material). Drew, I am building a 72 Suburban on a 01 Suburban Chassis. I think that I am using more of the original wiring harness than you but am also working on a way to integrate the 01 gauges into the 72 dash. If I have any breakthroughs I will let you know, if that is something your are interested in.

Some pics of my dash- the decal has developed some bubbles- need to fix that. It's been in for 9+ years & works well. Also, I put a lexan lense in & removed the Dodge lens

We made and sold jewelry all weekend long, so no truck work. Today I started making the trailer hitch/rear bumper/rear bed mount.
I trimmed about an inch off of the frame rails to make room for my 2 by 4 inch - 3/16 wall box tubing. I'll mount the 4 inch receiver tube to the bottom of this, extending forward about 10 inches to catch the next frame crossmember. Also I will weld some bumper mounts off the new frame tubing.

Actually, parts of Africa are absolutely incredible. Some of the best surfing in the world can be found there, and the Serengeti plains are AMAZING! But I've been there...and I'd choose the Carribean or the South Pacific myself now .

It will still be an amazing adventure none the less. I'm going to Ecuador in June on a mission trip myself.

Something that I have been thinking about for all of the late model dash clusters in the older trucks...

Start with a chrome glove box door, cut out what ever shape fits the shape of the new cluster plus the slot for the column. Then paint the remaining part that is inside the outer "trim" area flat black and cover that whole area with very thin smoked plexiglass. You'd need to find really bright dash light bulbs or possibly add more (I'm thinking LED to keep from getting too hot). Anyway with all of that in place with the truck turned off you just have a blank shiney black dash and when you start it the whole thing lights up. I hope you can picture this since it looks really good in my mind. A matching glove box lid would balance it out.

Not that I would assume to alter your vision on it. In fact it kinda blows the whole "looks like they made it that way" thing.

What part of Africa? I have been to Ghana and Kenya, both for missions. Go in the winter and you get to enjoy the summer south of the equator. Both were incredible trips, I don't think you can go wrong.
