I have another project.

I need this like I need another Hole in my head

I have had my Eye on this Lathe for several years.

The man that I purchased this from, I was really fond of growing up.

The growing up part is (Debatable): lol:

He has collected Cars and trucks and lathes and Milling machines for years: metal:

He had this lathe tucked inside his Service Station thinking his Son would use it.

Well he finally put it out front in a Mile Long Yar-d Sal-E.

So it is Mine now.

It is a Logan Brand lathe.

I have a New Haven lathe (Year maybe1890)
And a 10F Atlas/Craftsman lathe.

Now I have a Logan in progress

Change Gears were rusted then put in a Coffee (Plastic) Can with oil
This helped because they would have pitted if He had not took the time to do this.
There was a Carriage bolt holding these together.

I use Oil Eater to remove the Used engine oil coating.
I put them in a Stainless-Steel cooking pot I got in a Yard sale deal.

This Evap a Rust works.
I have used lots of mixtures over the years

This is after a 2-day soak.

Thanks for the props. I can use that from time to time. Funny thing is I took a job in Oct '20 after 38 years of self-employment. By Jan '22 my employer was firing me screaming I'm no carpenter and an effin idiot. He also had high standards but also serious ego issues and I'm sure many more. It's a crazy story.

It's the same with machining or any conceive/measure/create type of work. Most all carpenters have the talent to do their job to a high quality standard. What we need first is to even care, about the work, about the customer, and about ourselves. Then to stick to a standard that carries that out. After that it's about discipline to adhere to that standard. Making sure it's right the first time is a matter of maintaining quality, but also very much a matter of economics. A big effect on profit vs loss. That is my selfish concern if nothing else. Then comes reputation, which is paramount in my case for sure. My work comes by referral. I get a customer and I do what I can to keep them.

I have hired experienced carpenters who in the first week are asking again and again, "Is this good enough?", "Do you think we can get away with this?", "Do you think they'll notice this?", etc. After some of that I tell them they are aiming too low. There is very little perfection in the world and often perfection is not possible. But if you aim for it you will hit close to it. When you aim for good enough you risk hitting not good enough. I can't have that'

I also got the guys who leaped both feet first into things with no forethought. I love a hustler, but hold your horses long enough to observe and plan then execute. Work smart not hard. The little time you spend up front will gain you far more time throughout the job. Safer, too!

Make simple rules and follow them.

I hung this VW sign. Not a big deal for most people but kind of a big deal for me. I have only been able to walk on my own for a very short time and I'm still a little shaky so climbing a ladder with a drill in one hand and a sign in the other was a little scary I couldn't hang on to anything. And of course I dropped the screws on the floor and had to do it all over again.
Probably not my brightest idea but I did it and I'm pretty happy about it.

Hubs on and fixed the ps line . Should have bought new shields but I just need it driving again . Tie rods came today so in they go in tomorrow and off to alignment on Friday .

No sun all week with threat of rain looming. I'm still poking away at the metal roof on the summer kitchen, when I can. Got the afternoon in yesterday. No rain for today (but overcast). I'll get that buttoned up today and start on gutter.

I'm glad that went well. If you didn't drop a screw or need to go up and down at least twice I'd be worried something bad is about to happen. Finally! Now you can stop worrying about people parking anything but a VW Thing in your garage.

You hung a picture of your thing up on the wall? Hmm.

My wife went on a quilting cruise and got Covid 5 days in. 11 day cruise with 6 in quarantine. Crazy.

As for me, I sat and read a book while someone else installed new flooring over at the rental house. They did OK, but the baseboard installation took a lot of caulking. I stink at caulking, but I'd've done better. Fortunately, one of my sons is going to paint the baseboards. The vinyl baseboard we originally bought was a pile of feces and will be returned for credit. Stove installation on Friday, some carpet cleaning, and then it's on the market for sale. It would have been way better to sell it 6 years ago, instead of renting it out. Deadbeat renters didn't pay any rent the last nine months, even though they all had jobs.

I had to rent a roll away to dump all the mess that they left behind and those things aren't cheap. Especially when my cheapskate neighbor threw all his junk in there too and overloaded it. Another $300 penalty for that. Thanks neighbor. I told the realtor to get it listed NOW! It's done. I'm done.

And that's not a picture of my thing. It's a picture of a VW Thing. If it were my thing I'd need a bigger sign.

I've been working on my sons 68 Camaro. It's turning out to be way more rust repair than I anticipated. Every panel I cut off has a rusty panel underneath.

So far I've removed or repaired both quarters, both outer wheelhouses, outer tail panel, outer upper dash partial, DS outer full rocker, PS outer rocker repair, full floor including seat mount panels, DS roof drip rail, DS inner roof structure repair, roof panel and DS A pillar repair. At least that's what I can remember as of now. Most parts are only fitted and mocked up as of now.

At this point I hate aftermarket sheetmetal. I have so much time in this crap. I even had to heat and bend the front of the new trunk lid to get the crown in it to match the rear filler panel.

I've got the back half, doors and roof skin looking pretty good now. I have now moved on to the PS cowl/firewall rust. I am replacing about half of the inner and outer panels but leaving the area behind the blower motor where the hidden partial VIN is.

You car is looking good. I can't wait until I am to that stage. LOL

When I first saw people using "build" in place of fixing up or restoring vehicles I didn't think that was right. GM built our trucks (and cars). But these days with all the body pieces the term is fitting. Looks like you're building that Camaro for sure!

Yes I am definitely building this thing. I also have to replace the entire upper dash panel, the inner rear valance, the complete rear package tray plus I have the rear filler panel under the rear window. Then I have to replace part of the inner and outer cowl at the bottom on the PS. Oh and I am also doing new trunk drop offs.

After that is all done I have to replace the trunk floor.

This is just an example of former work by who knows what maniac.
