Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

So I made a relief cut and bent it then filled the open area with new metal. It fits pretty good now

With lots of modifications to the cab support I finally got it welded in. The next step is to patch the floor above the support.

Hit a big roadblock today. The bed is in the way of me doing the cab corner and there is more rust behind the bed

Just A thought .When you get the hood make sure you get the latch parts. And the center support that has the catch portion. They are different and can be hard to find.

Looking good Nik. Your "build it yourself" attitude is awesome.

Thanks Dale, when I'm done I'll definitely be able to say "built not bought"

No pictures but today I got my sending unit working and did a little wiring to swap my generator for an alternator

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Did some work on the alternator brackets today. Used the bottom bracket from the generator that bolts to the block and drilled two new holes so the alternator could move forward and Line up with the pulleys. Then I welded on a tab in the middle with a hole drilled in it and left a little space so I can shim it to sit in the right spot.

More great work Nik. Keep checking jobs off your list and you'll soon be cruising.

Thanks Dale, even though the list seems endless I'm sure I'll get through with it eventually.

Did some work on the cab corner today. Instead of buying a new cab corner I'll be repairing the old one.
Here the rust on the old one, about 1-2" of it is completely gone

And here's the new patch panel just being held up. I bent it to match the rest of the cab. All bends were made using just a vise and hammer

Beauty! A break press is ideal, but a hammer or swing wrench, as I like to call it around the shop, will do just fine hahaha. Great job, looking forward to seeing that cab corner come together

Thanks, yes I enjoy getting creative with making patch panels since I have almost no metalworking tools except a grinder and welder.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Nice going. Where I live there are not many people here building stuff. Just buying new. I am trying to get my son into building a truck for himself. He is only 13 so we have a few years to get it done. I have an extra short bed truck for him. Nice thing is I have some rust free parts including a cab and doors so it makes it easy.
