Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
Finally getting a little time to work on the truck between work and the rain. I fabricated the rear bumper mounts. The S10 frame was narrower that the original frame, and I had to come out 2 1/4" per side. There is not much room behind the shackles and rear of the bed. So I had to cut a bit more clearance for the shackles to pivot.
I tucked the bumper up just under the bottom of the roll pan, and closer in than original. I happy with the look of the '53 bumper paired with the roll pan. I remounted the S-10 spare tire hoist. I have a recess behind the tailgate where I am planning to mount a control shaft to the hoist. Just got to get this all figured out. More on this later. |

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
Here is a few pics of my spare tire hoist. I made use of the space behind the tailgate and under the bed to conceal the tire hoist control shaft.
I turned down a 1/2" extension and used a piece of 3/4" tubing for the shaft. It was cheap and turned out per what I imagined. I didn't want to carry a spare tire around in the bed. |

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
I wasn't very happy with the look of the gap under the the grill, so I started fabricating an air dam to even up the look between the fenders. A little bit more massaging and I will bolt everything back in place and finish the ends.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
I'm not going to use an apron.
I finished shaping the air dam and adding a filler piece on the fenders to eliminate the gap where the fender radiuses up to the grille. I have the pieces tacked in, and will weld it out the next time I pull the fenders off. |

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
I finally finished the passenger side door gaps. I've been avoiding this like the plague. Now I just need to start the driver side.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
I fabricated new trunnions for the tailgate, and raised the tailgate 1/8" to get a little clearance under the tailgate. When I previously added the filler piece in the roll pan, I did not give it enough clearance, and it was barely touching when I let the tailgate down.
The new trunnions give a bit if a different look from the original ones. I did have to shorten the tailgate pivots about 1/4" on either side, where I could get these tight up against the sides. |

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
Since I was working on the tailgate, I mounted my Mar-K stainless tailgate linkages. These worked out nice. Now I just need to pick up some hidden tailgate latches.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
Thanks, I bought the roll pan at Ecklers, but I spent a bit of time modifying it to reduce the gap between the roll pan and the tail gate.
It started out with about an inch gap. I just welded it to the rear cross sill since there were screws just below the tailgate. I cut a couple of access slots on the back side where I could add my license plate lights. |

I have gotten soooo many great ideas from this and a few other builds. The level of craftmanship here, and a couple of others, ogre, and Roger55, is truly inspiring. Well done sir(s). Kel

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
When I bought these Frenched Headlights, the original pivot plates were a cheap brittle plastic with sheet metal screws for adjustment. These would have broken on the first good bump.
Well I finally finished one of the headlight spring plate assemblies. I used 1/8" stainless plate for the three rings and the headlight adjusting screws and nuts from a Mustang. It took a little bit of grinding on the adjusting nuts to get the assembly in the bucket. This was a very tight fit, but I was able to make the adjusting screws accessible through the headlight retaining ring. That way I can pull the headlight and still maintain the adjustment. |

I like the exhaust tips and inner fender louvers. Your interior is looking killer.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
I finally decided to finally bite the bullet and start the driver side door. I've been working on the gaps and the flush mount door handle.
I drilled a couple of 1/4" dowels in the hinges to help re-align the door each time I had to re-install it. This definitely speeded up the process of re-alignment. I have a little more grinding to do on the gaps and to start the final body work. |

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build
I recently picked up a pair of tailgate latches on Ebay and finally got the chance this weekend to install them. These are stainless and of nice quality. They were actually very easy to install. Well worth the money!
