Re: 72 k20 project
An air dog is just an aftermarket lift pump, not an injection pump. I do recommend them. You don't really need one below 400hp on a 12v, but the air removal and filtration are a very nice thing. Plus it really helps prime the system versus reaching down to push the stock lift pump. And on a 24v they have the provision for a lift pump, but the cam does not have the lobe on the cam to operate the lift pump. If you install an aftermarket cam, then you can run a 12v lift pump.

Re: 72 k20 project
from 89-93 the 12v had the VE pump. its a rotary pump, so when you look at it the injection lines leave the pump in the rear and form a circle.
94-98.5 12v has the P7100 or p-pump. it has all 6 injection lines leaving the top of the pump in a line front to back. the 98.5-2002 are 24v ISB. they came with the VP44 computer controlled IP. it also has 6 lines coming out of the back in a circle. beyond 2002 they are common rail systems, meaning all the injectors are fed from on common pressurized fuel rail. the pumps are CP3s and have no means to fire the injectors as that is done by the computer. im sure there are some variations in the industrial engines i know certain CPL #s have pumps that are not made for accelerator pedal situations. all of the above info is what i know of the dodge truck engines. |

ok, so the VP44 is not the lift pump, its the computer itself, got it. I'm going to search on cumminsforum to see if I can find some pictures of where the pumps are located on the engines. Thank you both so much and sorry for thread jacking Edit: I did some more research... I have figured it out now. hahaha. Takes a minute to get the lights on.

Re: 72 k20 project
Yep Ryan pretty much summed it up. There are A-pump 12v's in industrial apps, some VP30 12v's in ag and industrial stuff, and a very horrible capps system used on 24's up until the CR's, which are common in ag equipment and RV's. That's about it.

Re: 72 k20 project
Ah. Both of my bowties are sitting too. I got a better cab for the 1 ton, and a 67 clip for the hot rod, along with some kick ass paint, but I have been too wrapped up in building a welding table and my Explorer to mess with either of them.

Re: 72 k20 project
i need to make a heavy fab table, but i don't have a lot of room until the green monster is done. then i need to either sell or refurb the parts truck, then i need to think about my trail toy again. the poor jeep has been hidden in the very back and is being fervently ignored. the shame. and i have been eyeballing a wrecked TJ at the JY that i would like to build.

I think someone needs to start a back-burner thread!!! I could contribute to that one quite a bit!

Re: 72 k20 project
Got lucky today! for once(i was considering the end of the world theories to be true for minute) the local welding supply stores had what i needed. at the store i usually boycott, i found the feed rolls and tips for my miller. at the store i prefer to use i picked up a 12# roll of .030" the crappy store is a miller dealer, or else i would have gone to my normal place. i am a picky SOB when it comes to wire, so the lincoln store is usually my place anyhow. L-56 is pretty much the best there is, as far as i am concerned.
and on top of all that, blair got my spot weld cutters sent out in time to get them to me for the weekend! ryan |

Re: 72 k20 project
had to test out my new stuff. naturally i forgot i already had the .030 feed rolls. at least i found them before i opened the ones i bought....
i made this patch up since most of the outer floor/inner rocker was in fine shape. there was a few thin spots under the door seal so i decided this was good. i had to employ some trickery to get the radius of the bend right, but that is part of the fun right? |

Just spent last two hours studying your build. Awesome job so far. Never go wrong with a 12V. Good luck.

Re: 72 k20 project
Looks good! I Had to make a patch like that on my gmc (you can see it in my build), I clamped it to my A-frame which is 2x2 square tubing with nice smooth corners then slowly folded it over the edge with a body hammer until I got it where I needed it.

Re: 72 k20 project
i wasnt that inventive. i just had to stack material in the pressbrake to get the correct radius. we dont have any big radius punches. most of our customers want tight bends.
i got the patch finished Ryan |
