Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

K I talked to someone at industrial injection, they said I should be seeing 60 psi with my set-up, and the waste gate is set to open at 25psi. It's a s474 over a phatshaft 62 and you're right, he said they do not have to break in. So I must have a leak somewhere.. I'll make a plug tonight and test for leaks. What kind of clamps are you using on your boots? One of my clamps blew half way off the boot over the weekend so i'm thinking if i'm gonna hit some higher boost I better upgrade the clamps!

I use constant torque clamps. Also called t bolt clamps at heavy truck shops. You should see 60 easily with them. Good luck with it!

i use peak diesel boot kit with there clamp also have a bd diesel kit the both rated for 100psi i have blown a few of the cheeper boots and have delt with clamps sliding off yea with your big injectors i would say 60-75psi could be seen as i hit 65psi on a hard throttel all the time all ao check your hose from the head to the afc as if the leak it wont full fuel. looks great

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

So I finally have some good news! Got all the oil, coolant, and boost leaks fixed over the weekend woo hoo! Test drive was very successful, hit 70 lbs of boost right away, I was giggling like a school girl. I've never heard anything like it, that second turbo makes the loudest screaming howl! Hopin to get some videos up soon, but been busy with work of course and getting ready for scheid this weekend. I'd like to get her on the dyno while i'm there and see what kind of numbers it's making. Takin it in tomorrow for an alignment and wednesday the windows are getting tinted then thursday loadin up.
Here's a shot of the new timing gear cover from ZRM enterprises, 350 bucks off ebay and worth every penny.

Awesome! That cover is definitely sweet! Very nice on getting the leaks fixed and reaching 70psi. They are definitely a lot of fun with compounds. Window tint will set your truck off too!

The south bend clutch seems to hold it fine, timing was at 25 but industrial injection told me to back it down to 21 so I did..

So it was a successful weekend at Scheid's diesel extravaganza! Took 1st place in the show n shine Saturday against 70+ amazing high dollar trucks and featured in Diesel Army and Diesel World magazine! All the hard work finally payed off, cant thank my friends enough for all the help and motivation! Felt good that my low budget build could go up against the big fancy trucks like the blowermax. :party018:

Definitely looking forward to going back next year, they put on a great event! I was in diesel heaven, beautiful trucks everywhere, 2 dynos, truck pulls, and drag racing I couldn't choose what I wanted to watch. We went out to the after party for a little bit friday night, but got a little too crazy for us so we headed back to the hotel, aka our back seats..

New school next to old school!

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

Thanks guys! I need to take it to a local dyno and tune it. The guy down there let off at 3k rpms every time so the second turbo barley lit up. Partially my fault, I don't have the tach working yet and the motor wasn't warmed up for very long. She only made 421hp and 812ft lbs. Was a very smooth powerband though, awesome low end torque!

Congrats on the win and it looks great! I'd say take it to Randall's to dyno it if I were you after you tune on it.

Thanks guys! Yea i'm not sure what to do next for tuning, I don't have much experience with these 12 valves.. I was just going to put it on the dyno, then advance the timing every run.. Suggestions?
Are you going to the Volga City truck cruise this weekend??

No I'm not. I'd like to get up there some time though. You might start playing with your AFC or at least checking to see where it's set at. What pistons are in your engine and what injectors again? Do you recall what kind of boost you were seeing? That bottom charger should have been making boost well by 3k for sure.

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

AFC is deleted, I just have an adjustable fuel plate that I can control from inside the cab. I'm running the Marine pistons and 7x14 sac injectors. Is it possible it's getting too much fuel? Because when both turbos are fully lit there's still a lot of black smoke.. Maybe propane injection would help clean it up..
I did get the tach working! Turns out i'm an idiot and had the sensor on the alternator sideways.. Turned it and now it works great and as I suspected I was never reving it much past 3K rpms.
So I pulled the camper up to the Volga city truck cruise this weekend, got there and the front output seal on the transfer case was pukin oil! Luckily the seal just popped out and we were able to push it back in with a screw driver then wrap it with a rope to hold it in. Then used a smart water bottle and motor oil to top it back off and were able to do the cruise! Got very lucky, I thought we were gonna have to drive back home and get 2 trucks and a trailer to get the rig back.. Got a little worried when egt's hit 1500 a couple times climbing long steep grades. May have to invest in a water methanol kit to cool things down. Also had the problem with the new breather coming out of the front timing gear cover puking oil out while driving.. I'm wondering if my engine builder didn't set the aftermarket dipstick right and there was too much oil in the motor.. When I changed the oil it took just under 2 1/2 gallons to fill it to the full mark. On the good side of things she pulled the camper like there was nothing behind me! For braking I installed an inertia sensing brake controller which worked awesome.

7x14 sacs, yeah I'd say you have too much fuel. Probably your high egt issue while towing too.

I also finally got the mudflaps installed, they look and work awesome! Good thing too, the tires were throwing massive rocks and destroying the paint!..

The mud flap install looks great. I like all the SS bracketry. Congrats on the exposure through Diesel Army as well.

I second that question, how often do you take it out? And how does that twin turbo beast do on fuel?

Re: 89 crew cab k20 4wd twin turbo cummins swap

Thanks guys!!
Yea i've been driving it quite a bit, hauling equipment, and friends around on the weekends.
I've been working it pretty hard to get the rings to seat, but with the pump up all the time i'm still averaging 12.5mpg which i don't think is bad at all compared to the 5mpg i got with the 454 2wd empty!
It's a blast to drive, except the spooled rear end, that has to go!
Looking for a good affordable locker, any recommendations??
I'm working on getting a video up soon, but harvest really has me tied up right now so I apologize..

My vote goes for a Detroit Locker, unless you want to spend about twice the $$$ on an ARB air locker.
