1954 Chevy / S10
Hi my name is Shannon , I have been watching this site for a couple years and thought I would put my project on here. My own project is a 1948 Chevy panel, but I am building a couple other projects besides my own. I started with just a rusty cab, put in all the panels. I made the firewall and toe board and the patch panels that they don't make because it's a 54'. Then mounted it on the S10 frame. I then made my own bed to the 54' sizes except raised the bed floor 2 inches and narrowed it 2 inches for the 3 inch wider fenders. mounted all the fenders and hood, the made the roll pan and tail lights, splash aprons and the running boards. Right now I'm mounting the bull nosed grill and making/ mounting the radiator support. Truck will have a SBC, 700R4, And a F*** 8.8 3.73 Posi rear. I t has standard front springs and has Summit 3 inch lower leaf spring for the rear. I'll keep posting pictures as I go.

Re: 1954 Chevy / S10
I got the grill in. If anybody else is doing a 1954 - S10 conversion it is different than the pre 1953. The lower grill needs to be cut to go around the steering box. I need to start on the radiator support next and the hood fitment. Then make new inner wheel wells.

Halfadime, I made them. It's 1/4 red acrylic with drop ceiling diffuser for the prizmatic reflector and you have use to used a special glue because epoxy will not work. I found out the hard way. That way you can make what ever shape and size you want.

Re: 1954 Chevy / S10
Masshole, I used 1 1/2 exhaust tubing and welded it to the 16 gauge sides. You have to really watch your heat so you don't warp it out. I have made 4 beds and have it down to a science. I built one for my son to slept in.

99 to Life, good to see someone from PA too, not to many. You are right about the rust. It's good that I love doing sheetmetal work.

Re: 1954 Chevy / S10
Here is the latest pictures. I finally got the radiator support made and mounted. Ended up mounting toward the passenger side so it wouldn't sit too high. The fan will be more to the center of the radiator. The lower part of the grill needed to be notch out. Next will be to make the inner wheel wells and the mounts for the front fenders ( there kinda floating there). The panels also need made to get the air into to radiator up front.

Re: 1954 Chevy / S10
Kabwe, Thank you.
Got the cross member almost done. Pulled the fuel line out and it leaked gas all over the frame. So no welding on that side tonight. Should have pictures next week. I'm not working on it this weekend. My wife and me are going to the King of Prussia mall to do some Christmas shopping for the weekend . We are going without the kids ( we have 3). We haven't done that since 4 years ago! It is much needed! |

Cool build. Do you have any drawn out plans for the bed bed?

nickp51chevy, No , but let me know what you need. I have both styles that I measured from trucks. My sons is the 48-53 style and the other one is the 54-55 style.

Re: 1954 Chevy / S10
The splash aprons and running board sections; how did you do those? I think those would be the only real challenge.

Re: 1954 Chevy / S10
nickp51chevy, The splash aprons were done on slip rolls and then have a 1" 90 degree bend on the bottom of them. That way you can bolt it to the top of the running board. If you don't have a slip roll it can be done on a brake. Mark your sheet metal on both ends every 1/4" were your radius will be and bend a little at each mark till you get the right radius. I made a radius gage to check it as I go.
The running board I have a 1" back bend on the bottom then I think it is 1 3/4" high and then what ever the distance back. The truck I am working on has 3" wider fender in the back so the running board is wider in the back. Next I bent the upright pieces. I have a 1" bend at the top then whatever the distance tto the running board then another 1" bend at the bottom. So it looks like a channel. On the bottom of the channel I unibitted holes every 3" and they are 3/8" to plug weld channel to running board and also stitch welded on back side of the runnig board. The channel isn't all one piece and isn't staight. Under the cab is 1/2" lower than the area where the splash apron is. The running boards were the left over pieces from the making the bed sides. They were longer than they need to be but that was good that way you have room for error for cutting the radius for the fenders. I fit it to the front and back fenders. I then welded in a piece of sheet metal for the ends so that it bolts to the fenders. If you need any pictures let me know and I'll post them. |
