Wow, what a read! You should write a book of stories from the assembly line! Don't recall seeing a book like that. Great job on the truck!

Re: Intro from an old Assembly Plant guy
Hey Keith I don't think your done. I was just noticing that you didn't put the emblems back on the front fenders. just kidding. I'm sure you meant to leave them off. Just thought I would give you a hard time. I may have even missed where you talked about not putting them back on.

Yep - that and leaving the tailgate clean are the only exterior visual differences from when it was new. K PS - I always hated those "yellow" fender emblems, even when it was new! If you look back in the "before" pictures you can see the remains of where I had painted them black, back in the day.

Re: Intro from an old Assembly Plant guy
That panel adhesive can't be all bad- alot of new car bodies are assembled with it these days and they hold up well. I've been wondering about this stuff for awhile, hoping to see someone use it and post their thoughts on it. Seems like a good option for those who don't have a welder.

Re: Intro from an old Assembly Plant guy
I used it to fill trim holes, and shave the cab seam on my '73. To be fair, I am a hack, though.

Re: Intro from an old Assembly Plant guy
Here is my expirence with it. I have an 87 corvette. The rear deck had to be replaced. The panel bond adhesive that was on was stronger than the fiberglass. where the glue was on a metal stiffener support I had to grind it off. That stuff is good chit! It is availible on several open times (that is how long before it kicks off). Mine was a two part material and did use a special gun with a mixing nozzle. I'd use it again if the need ever arises. It would be great for someone that cannot weld.

Re: Intro from an old Assembly Plant guy
Ah - I'm glad you asked...
It's a "Pressure Relief Valve", which is the little rubber flappy thingy inside the bottom of the door. It is supposed to help you close the door(s) with the windows up, or allow the fan to blow full speed, by bleeding the air pressure off out of the cab. The flaps are designed to keep the cold air from blowing back in. I took them out to paint the doors and I was concerned that I would forget to put them back in. I had visions of putting the trim panel back on, getting it all buttoned down and then DANG! Hence my little masking tape sticky note on the door. Anyway, I didn't have any trouble with the passenger door. Got it all put together with no issues. But when I went to put the driver's door together - I was getting ready to put the driver's door panel back on and my (10 year old) daughter walked up and said "...daddy, are you forgetting anything?" I stopped for a second and said "yes, honey - I sure am". Sure enough, in spite of my notes, I almost put the door together without reinstalling that pressure valve. Fortunately she happened to walk up at just the right instant.... ...she got an ice cream cone out of that deal. K

Re: Intro from an old Assembly Plant guy
Yes I am; I think I can talk about it here.
It's actually going quite well; lots of news and activity back here. We just finished our "Integration" build (pre-production units) at the PreProduction build shop across the street. The build was started on time and finished early, the final vehicle celebration being covered by our local big newspaper, the Detroit Free Press. http://freep.com/article/20091009/CO...production-run. I was also individually interviewed by the author, Mark Phelan, for a feature on Michigan auto workers, which will run later in the year. (Now that I think about it: We also had a bunch of visits from the national media during the build: Discovery Channel, National Geographic and several international dignitaries - the Prime Minister of Australia and the Secretary of Energy for Great Britain - all stopped by. About the only person we haven't seen is Jay Leno - lol). There were 74 completed vehicles, using production intent bodies and components, which will be used for all kinds of testing (barrier, driveability, durability, road trips, marketing, etc). Some of these vehicles are loose on public roadways, and have been driven in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona and up and down Pikes Peak. My Vehicle Chief Engineer and some of the other engineers have been driving them around on weekends. I should add that, of the 74, either my boss or I have driven every single one of them. There is a little bit of a lull currently as we gather data from these vehicles and transition from the PPO build shop to the next big phase, which is Non-Saleable builds in the vehicle assembly plant in Hamtramck, Mi. There's still a lot of work to be done but basically we are on track and things are looking very good. K
