Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Just a few of last nights progress taking some problem areas down with 80 grit had her following me with 220 and a scotch bright got about 70% of the truck sanded down for a first full prime last night so I was really happy about that

Val

You sure have change the "ugly duckling" the previous PO left you with to the fine looking tk. Can't wait for the 454 to live again.

Dimples looks great in safe ware, trust me I know, had I known about sunscreen in the 60's I wouldn't be paying the price now.

I really enjoy the progress and watching the skills that you have been exercised I wish I had U of Youtub, would not have grenaded a sweet little 63 327 4 bolt main in the home coming parade. heald the thottle open just a litte to long, the crank cane out the side going in different directions jettson part galore, What a mess. What great Woohoo. Keep on keepin on

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Over this last weekend we got a ton done I finished the firewall and the lower hinge pocket patch on the passenger side no real pictures of that just hammered it out and ground it down nothing pretty just to keep water out of the hinge pocket

A ton more was done just can't really see much change just sanding a ton stripping rusty panels down and pulling dents nothing to exciting in picture form

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Next steps are getting the engine mount locations on the cross member (as far back as possible preferably) set the transmission cross member located (not even sure if I can use this one but we will try) all while continuing the never ending saga of body work

Still on the lookout for gauges as well

Thanks Kim

Looking into brake proportioning valves for my rear discs to keep them from locking up under light braking anyone use this unit or have one they recommend? Also finding that 3/16ths line is recommended for a rear disc setup is this true?

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Val, I've got such a propvalve, from Speedway, not used it though, not roadworthy yet...
I was told it should work good, only you have to find out the right adjustment for your truck.
I also was gold that 3/16 brakeline suites rear discbrakes, but others say it doesn't matter that much...

So, this won't help you much

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Last week I set out to find a pin and bushing kit for my hinges as the hinges from my "bad" doors were in great condition and the ones from my "good" doors are trashed to say the least

So I looked at all the big name vendors (LMC, classic industries, Summit) and found that all of the "kits" cost twice as much as I was willing to pay and then add on 20 dollars in shipping and we were 30 dollars higher then what I wanted coming out of my bank account

So being the GM parts professional that I am I set out to find a GM number that worked

so this is what I found for anyone that cares or is interested in doing this themselves

Pin # 20046147
Bushing # 9721917
Enlarged/Knurled Bushing # 20429500

And then some pictures showing the fit the pins will need to be trimmed down but no big deal there

Also my original bushings were plastic is this common? Haven't built a full hinge yet just poked at it over lunch but all looks good

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Looking at the hinges each door has one with a spring and arm on it and another simply has a stop built into it which one goes where?

Got the hinges all rebuilt was able to make one good set out of two sets of some questionable condition plus I have a few left over parts

Hey Val, Truck looks like its coming along great.

The hinge with the stop built into it should be the upper hinge, at least it is on my 59'

When I took my doors and hinges apart, I found the spring at the upper hinges and the stop at the bottom??
I put it that way together again. It works
And also mine had plastic bushings originally...

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Because I am getting so close to having the doors on we are getting close to needing to get glass made for the sides and rear I am going single piece side half because I like a cleaner look and half because its a chop top

The issue I'm having is finding a one stop shop for what to do I know I found one really good writup once and now can't find it. It showed where to grind the stock window mechanism to allow further travel and showed where to drill and move the front channel to however I would prefer to try to sell the vent windows and stock glass as a set for some "cashback" is it possible to just get some 1" C channel and felt to have the glass ride in? Is that what this guy did? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=189

And lastly I can't find a simple one piece window weatherstrip kit all of the ones I find include glass but I plan on just going to my local shop since its so much shorter

AGH SO MANY QUESTIONS

Hey VS, nice find on the door hinge pins! Sure beats paying too much money from a vendor for repackaged parts.

Re: Project Orange Crush (57 3100)

Kees at my dealership there's a guy that is old enough to remember that the original ones were nylon "as were mine" however he said sometime around the early 80s they were discontinued

AD I agree I can't stand people trying to make "a quick buck" that way it just feels like I'm getting screwed
