Re: 58 GMC Project

Hello again,

Yes, this does help. What is the bracket at the end of the frame for? I assume you cut the front part of the subframe off to put the og frame pieces back on. I have seen a couple of threads about the other bracket you welded on. What does this bracket attach to on the doghouse? Sorry for asking so many questions but I'm fixing to do this soon and theres no better teacher than experience. It appears to me buy your pics that I need to cut the subframe in front and in the rear. I don't know that I need those front brackets, if there for the bumper, my bumper bolts to the frame in the bottom. I appreciate the help.

By the way, your truck looks great. I hope to see mine that way some day.

Thanks again,
B.sharp

Re: 58 GMC Project

Hey b.sharp,

Just to let you know, I was not the person who installed the sub frame. It was already done when I bought the truck. I don't know how much to cut off the front of the sub frame before you weld the front part of the original frame back on. The brackets on the front are for the bumper and the ones on top are for the radiator support.

Re: 58 GMC Project

awsome truck. I`m picking up a 55 smallwindow in the next couple weeks. It`s already disassembled so it should be pretty easy to get going on it. Your thread and 55chevypu`s thread has me wanting to get going on it asap. Do you have any shots of the fiberglass firewall cover installed?

Re: 58 GMC Project

Thanks for the pic. someone tried to install swing pedals in it at some point and cut up the firewall a little bit along with some of the drip rail(?) on the firewall. I was just going to cut out the pieces and weld in flat metal pieces but I think the cover would be easier. I can fix the drip rail pretty easy I think. I`ll definatly start a new thread when I get mine and post some pics. My progress will be alot slower than yours. The good thing about mine is the body is already off so it will save me some disassembly time and the body is really clean. I did`nt see any rot but it could be lurking around under there somewhere. Thanks again for the pic.

Hey man its looking good. Did you go to the Brothers truck show? I was there. If you did go sorry I missed meeting you. Anyway I've been very busy on the truck lately. Rust repair and body work ya know. It looks like you are going to have a really nice truck.

Hey Kabwe, I did not go to Brothers. It would have been a 700 mile round trip on what would have been a short weekend. Next year for sure! Do you have any updated pics of your truck?

Re: 58 GMC Project

Yeah I do I just have not had any time to upload them to my site. I'll try to get on that. I'm taking many build pics because I have a couple of friends that like to see how I do stuff. I think I will be painting this truck myself also. I have not done that in a while but I always do all my body work (I don't trust anyone to care as much as I do) so painting should be a breeze. We will see how it goes. I'm still a long ways off. I just brought a bunch of tools (2 stage air compressor and a 220 mig welder) so I can get busy even when money is low.lol

Re: 58 GMC Project

CAL 58, whats the specs of your rear wheels? I know your running a s-10 rearend but I must have missed the wheel specs. Do they fit in the wheel well? do you need tubs? Have you fit the bed with them on? I`m just trying to get a idea for what fits without too much mods. I`m probably only going to run 17`s but I still like to know what fits in these old trucks. I like your idea of running the s-10 rearend and might consider that as well since they are fairly easy to find out here. Thanks.

The wheels are 20x10 with a 4 inch back space. I am running wheel adapters as spacers. I have not yet placed the bed on yet but if I messure right they should fit without tubbing the bed.
