Kobin/Karl,
man that truck is coming along great! Korbin, I have welders here at work that cant weld half as good as you! just throwing an idea out there that you may not have considered yet... notching the trans xmember for exhaust clearance. this is what i did to mine. guess you wont be dragging it out to TurkeyDrag with most of it going to the blasters? .

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
Thanks, guys!
The trans crossmember did not turn out the way I wanted....I agree that we will need to do something about it for the exhaust. I like yours, but I might do a complete ring/box where the pipe will pass thru. I talked to the blaster today, we might have it all back by the end of this week. That means we have Thanksgiving break to put it together enough to get it rolling. We will see if it can make turkey drag...we will come over on Saturday even if it is not done...

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
Got the parts back from the blaster. He did an OK job, they use steel blasting grit instead of sand. It is not a clean as I hoped but it is way better then what I could have done for the money he charged. The frame rails and the bed floor were the worst parts and they still show "stains" where the worst rust was. The surface was really rough from the grit used, so Korbin started on the outside of the frame rails with a DA and 80 grit paper. The parts feel good after that. He is going to start putting on the KBS Frame Coater paint today. For the bed floor, We will put a coat of Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator paint on, then top coat with primer and paint. Should look good when we are done...
Korbin working on the rails: Here are the rest of the parts: We have a goal of having the chassis rolling with a cab(no paint) by November 30th, to take to Turkey Drag, wish us luck...

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
Well we had a set back to hitting our goal yesterday...We started coating the inside of the frame with KBS Rust Seal. It looks real good on the parts we got done already. We did the insides of the rails, the front crossmeber and a few other parts. We went back yesterday evening and found that one of us left the lid off the can... About a 1/3 of the can was left and all of it was bad...
I'll order more on Monday, or see if the reseller in Tyler has some in stock. We did a few other things to work toward getting it together, but that really set us back from our goal for this weekend. We will keep plugging away at it. I might still make it, but we will not be disappointed if it is not presentable enought to take it. We will still go on Satuarday to look...

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
I was able to get more of the KBS Rust Seal. I put on one coat on the frame rails last night. I did not have time to do the second coat, so I will have to scuff it tonight to put on the second coat. Thats OK since there are a couple of spots that I do not like how they look. This stuff is brushed on and flows out really well, look at the reflection of the wall on the frame in the second picture. Here is what it looks like now:
I plan on getting the front cross memeber bolted to the rails tonight and a second coat applied to the main rails. I have nearly everything to complete the rolling chassis this week and we are still shooting to have a chassis to display this weekend at Turkey Drag. I will know more by Wednesday if we are going to make it with the chassis. Either way we are going to look around at the show on Saturday.

I've heard of taking it down too the frame, very few take it this far. Y'all are doing an amazing job. It will be sharp! Keep on keeping on.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
Spent time at the shop last night. The frame has the second coat and Korbin worked on getting the motor painted. He got it cleaned and sprayed the block and transmission gloss black. He is going to do all the brackets gloss black too. Not sure what we are going to do with the valve covers and motor cover, we have some time to decide that....Here are the before paint pictures of the motor/trans:
I did not get any after paint. I will get some tonight after we unmask it. I am off work tomorrow with the plan to work on getting the chassis together. We will go out tonight and bolt the frame together and get it on stands to work on. Korbin wants to work on the accessory brackets to blast them and paint them. We will see how much we can get done.

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
Korbin and I were able to spend a couple of hours at the shop tonight. He worked on painting a few brackets and I started putting the frame together. He helped square it up and get it up on stands. We almost got the rack on the front, but I need to drill out a few holes that are to tight with paint. I broke the bit I need the other day, so we had to call it quits for the night. I will get another bit in the morning. I plan to spend the day getting it together.
Here is where we got to tonight: I need to repaint the spring hangers in the morning, they did not come out like I wanted...

Re: 2 for 1, My son's first Square Build
had a ton of fun at turkey drag. can't wait to show a complete truck there. got a lot of compliments and saw a ton of guys from this board! here's some pics of the progress.
finished and ready to go! got a friend of mine to tow my truck there, really nice truck, 07 classic sierra vortecmax with full bolt ons, custom bucket rear seats and center console style sub box me and him built. Ran into a few issues along the way, we lost a nut for the driver's side lower ball joint, so we had to go get one at oreily's this morning. the coupler that connects the rack and pinion arm to the ball joint on the spindle had messed up threads, so we had to make due and c clamp it together. we didn't have a spring compressor and the a jack lifted the whole truck up before compressing the spring all the way, so we cut another coil off the spring, if you add up the 1.5" sectioned xmember, 2.5" spindle aand 4" drop spring, thats 8" of static drop in the front. my dad thinks that's how we're gonna run it on the street, but idk about that. the rear brake kit went together really easy. i think we're going to have to run like a 2" lowering block in the rear cuz if we don't we would have like a foot of travel. we are going to have to redo the engine mounts completely because they're crooked just enough so that it's a pita to get in. i've bought a few performance parts like a 3200 stall converter and new intake manifold. i'm exhausted but glad we pushed to get it done.

Thanks guys. Korbin is even more exited about it. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks Kirby for putting up those pictures, those look real good.
I spoke with Rob at NoLimit yesterday. He is going to send out another adapter to replace the one that is messed up. Thanks Rob! We took a break from Red the last two days. We had to do stuff around the house. Posted via Mobile Device
