Re: Project - '69 4x4 named "Patches"

I haven't posted any updates lately, but things are still slowly progressing behind then scenes here. Alan and I made the trip down to the Moultrie swapmeet back before Thanksgiving. This was our first time going to this meet and we had a good time even though it rained Saturday night and into Sunday morning and some major vendors left early before we got a chance to buy anything from them. Prior to this show I had been in touch with Tim Christian getting my wish list in order. 99% of the stuff I bought at the show I bought from Tim and he really hooked me up with some great prices on everything. I now have all of the necessary sheetmetal to put my truck back together again. Tim is a great guy to deal with and will get more of my business. Here are a few things that I brought back.

inner/outer fenders
dash pad
front end bolt kit
grill bolt kit
grill emblem
bumper splash shields
ac battery tray
71-2 parking light assemblies
exterior door handles
replacement cab drip rails

I finally saved up enough mad money after the Moultrie show to finally have my cab blasted. I called the blaster trying to shedule a time to drop my cab off and he told me that his compressor is down at the moment. Well I waited this long so what's a few more days, right? He's getting a service tech to come out this week to get it running again, so hopefully next weekend I can get it dropped off and once I get it back we can finally start the bodywork phase of my build.

I have been working on a deal for a "big" part for my truck here recently and I finally pulled the trigger yesterday and picked them up from another board member (southern parts) that's pretty local to me. I've been searching for set for a while now but I never found the right deal. I found several sets on the west coast but most people weren't interested in shipping them. That or they were either out of my price range to begin with. Anyway, Woody made me a good deal on the ones he had so we struck a deal. So without further delay here's the newest addition to my truck.

67/68 Buddy Buckets

I owe a special thanks to Alan and southern parts (Woody) for getting out in the 22 degree weather yesterday so I could get these seats.

Hopefully within the next week or two my cab will get blasted and I can get serious about finishing my truck.

So stay tuned.....

Hey Taylor. Good to hear from you. These seats are a direct bolt in replacement for the stock bench seats in the 67-72 trucks. I plan on getting them fully restored one day. I can't decide if I want to go with the stock 67-8covers or go with a custom pattern.

Here's a restored set with the correct 67-8 pattern.

This has been on my "special" list of things of get for a while. I'm just happy that I've got a set now.

Re: Project - '69 4x4 named "Patches"

nope, that's the 67 pattern.. the 68's where like these... 67/68 were the only years to have buddy buckets but they are still cool, for a Marine!

I'm thinking a black suede (or dark gray) insert with black leather outer trim... of course i'll go with that until I get a quote then it will be $300 repo vinyl!

Re: Project - '69 4x4 named "Patches"

Ok Flyboy, thanks for the correction on the patterns. I'm just so used to grouping the year models together when I talk about these trucks.

Being that my truck will be painted medium olive I'll probably just go with the basic black covers as well. I wouldn't mind having some covers with some scroll work in them like on the 69-72 buckets, but I haven't seen any off the shelf covers like that for the 67-8 buckets.

Thanks Heath. Trust me I owe alot to Alan for the help, guidance and support that he's given me with my truck. He's a good guy and we help each other out all of the time. I couldn't ask for a better neighbor.

Thanks Doug. So being that you read through my entire build you should have a list of things not to do to your truck now. It's been a great learning experience for me that's for sure.

Any pictures of your truck? Have you started a build thread yet?

Good luck.

Please post pictures. We all love pictures around here. I have all of my photos saved in a photobucket account and it's pretty easy to load them here from photobucket.

Sending you a pm.

Haha. Yep. I haven't even started on my build and I wish it was done by now. Although, I have built it many times in my head and it gets done pretty quick. Hopefully when I start mine, it will go the same as in my mind. Maybe you should try.

Re: Project - '69 4x4 named "Patches"

Well, the wheels of progress are still slowly turning here. The sandblaster called me this past weekend to tell me that he is finally up and running again after dealing with a faulty injector pump on his compressor. So now we're just waiting on some nicer weather before I get my cab blasted.

I've been half heartedly looking for a "factory" style steering stabilizer for a little while now and after some help from some members here I was finally able to order the correct one. I have '72 Blazer axles in my truck now and they have a tab mounted/welded to the front axle where the stabilizer mounts. For some reason I was having the hardest time locating the correct setup and the local "4x4" shop wasn't much help either.

Here are a few pictures of the style stabilizer that I was looking to replace.

Here's the new one that I got from Rancho. Part# RS97325 (On a side note all of Rancho's shock are now painted silver instead of white.)

This "kit" includes the studs that go through the eyes of the shock and mount to the bracket on the axle and the bracket that mounts to the tie rod. I'll just have to re-use the old u-bolts and bracket that clamps to the tie rod.

Re: Project - '69 4x4 named "Patches"

I got a visit from the man in the brown truck yesterday.

This thing was sealed up tighter than Fort Knox.

24 screws later I finally got the lid off.

10 lbs of packing material

One hell of a packing job. It's nice buying from people that go through this much effort to ensure that the goods arrive undamaged.

What was in the box you ask?

A fully rebuilt floor shift tilt column.

I've been wanting one since I started my build, but $500 for a rebuilt column was hard to swallow. I've been searching craigslist and e-Bay for a while now off and on hoping to find a "cheap" one but I haven't had any luck. When I did find good "deals" I never had the spare cash to pull the trigger.

I found this one on e-bay and watched it for the entire 7 days figuring it would be snatched up at any minute because he had a "buy it now" price that was cheaper than what I've seen used/abused tilts going for. I finally bought it on the final day of the auction and after several emails to the seller confirming that it was a true truck tilt and not a converted van/auto tilt.

Even with shipping I still have less than four bills in it. It also came with new tilt and turn signal levers.

I thought the seller was a member here, but when I asked him about the site he said that he had never heard of it. So maybe he'll join in the future. He said he's been messing with 67-72 trucks for years now.

Stay tuned bodywork should be around the corner. I hope.
