Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Not at all, especially when most places charge more than that just to rework the harness.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
That sounds like a smokin' deal on the harness and PCM tune. Can you PM me his info so I can do the same for my swap?

I think I would go with the red too. It would really match Fred very well.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Bob,
Awesome thread! I will be watching this close! I am planning on doing this swap on my son's 69 one of these days in the near future. So I will be taking notes. We are in the middle of a TBI transition on his 86. We still have a long way to go. You will love the 5.3 I have had a couple of them and loved them. I pull my boat with my truck about 60% of the time I drive it. So, I opted for the Vortec Max 6.0 on my 07 model. The 5.3 engines have better bottom end power in my opinion. My 6.0 seems like you have to the rpms up to get the "max" power out of it. When it hits the powerband it will hit the rev limiter in no time flat. I love the 6.0 for power...but I average around 14-15 mpg. You are using a stand alone harness? I may have missed this part, why do you have to send off your pcm? Can this harness be tied into your truck? or the 69? Also, if you don't mind, how much was the engine and tranny with all those accesseries? I just quoted a drive by wire out of an 08 locally with 8 miles on it. They wanted like $3800! Keep up the good work!!!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
I've had one 5.3 in a 1/2 ton extended cab that was supercharged, and a 6.0 in my 1500HD. The 5.3 flat hauled you know what! And I know what you mean about the 6.0, when pulling a steep grade with the snowmobile trailer or fifth wheel, it hits 4000 rpm and pulls like a tank.
The PCM needs reprogramming to delete the unneeded stuff, like VATS (the anti-theft), EVAP and all the emissions stuff that is not needed, set the gear ratios and tire size for the speedo, and make it's operation stand alone too. Plus do the performance tune. The stand alone harness is easy to hook up, there are only a handfull of ignition wires, a 12v constant, and a few grounds. I don't see any reason to try to integrate it into the truck's harness, the PCM has nothing to do with any of the truck's operations. I have a 4 hole fuse block with 2 relays that I will use to hook it up. It will be very easy and clean. 8 miles huh? It's a new engine, but $3800 still seems a little steep for just the engine. I got a 58,000 mile engine and a 4L60E trans from a wrecked 2006 Silverado for $2000, including all the front accessories, radiator and shroud, yoke, drive by wire stuff, etc. These are 200,000 mile engines, so I still have ~150,000 miles left in mine. www.specializedpartsplanet.com 800-722-6015 and ask for Paul Smith.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
OK, for you fellow freaks doing this swap too, I found the correct o-ring adapters to use on the GM/Denso 10S17F and 10S20F A/C compressors. These mount to the compressor and allow you to adapt to standard #8 and #10 female o-ring fittings.
http://www.nostalgicairparts.com/air...apters-592.php As well as http://www.coldhose.com/cat/compressor-adapters-25.php for $24.99 for the pair, part number GM1605.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Didn't get a whole lot done last night, but I did manage to get the shop cleaned up, and separated the engine and tranny. Today I will pick up some M10-1.5x65 bolts so I can bolt the engine to the stand.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Thanks Bob! I appreciate the info about the harness. BTW, that detailed engine you posted looks SUPER! This is going to be a sweet ride! 200k is conservative on the miles...I have seen some 300k plus out there on the road still.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Oh absolutely! I was meaning one shouldn't jump on the super duper low mile engine in place of a well priced 50,000-75,000 mile engine just due to miles.
I'm hoping to start detailing the engine this weekend. It's not going to take much cleaning, so it should go quickly!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
I got the engine on the stand last night and just spent some time looking it over, getting familiar with the location of all the sensors and stuff. A mental note thing. Also got the water pump pulled off, and pulled the rocker covers to take a look. VERY clean!
And, I just sold the catalytic converters for $30 each! There is a guy here that advertises in the free classified ad paper that buys them for the internal materials. Back into the budget it goes! And I had to throw in the last pic for grins, took it on the way to the kid's daycare this morning. I love Colorado!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Ooook, so..... I decided to redesign the fuel system, remember that? Two filter regulators instead of just one, right? So that meant that I didn't need the 6-port switching valve, correct? Correct! So I did what any gear head/bone head that had already ordered a 6-port valve would do..... sent it back and exchanged it for a 3-port valve.
So the replacement "3"-port valve arrived today. Had I know this is how they make a 3-port valve, I would have attempted to build one myself. But it's probably a good thing I let them do it, as I could have messed this up real bad......... Ready for the pic?? If you don't like I did, something be wrong witcha! Lucky for them it is the same price, or I would be mad!!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Hey Hey !! Nice to see my engine is bringing you some motivation/inspriration !! I can tell you your thread has my brain going BIG time. You are lucky to not have to deal with smog !!
You got the motor/trans for a good deal thats for sure. I paid $650.00 for the engine and $800 for my 4l80e. Im just hoping the 4l80e doesnt rob me of too much power...I had a engine cover, belts, extra a/c pump, and some other random stuff. But I when I quit my last job I left it all behind, I just kept my engine. I also spent another $ 800 on my wiring harness so Its plug and play from the fire wall forward which is nice. And he is good friend so I can go to him for any problems...or modifacations. I plan on building a 6.0 at some point ( once the 5.3 is in and done ) on the side while I drive it. I would like to cam the 5.3 and maybe put some headers and decent exaust on it.... I first have to get past the Smog Ref

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"
Got the engine cleaned up this morning, and have the oil pan, timing cover and valley cover painted. Sprayed some primer, then a first coat of the red. The kiddos and I are getting ready to eat lunch, then it's back out for a final coat of red. As soon as I get the rocker covers done, and the paper off, I'll get some pics put up.
Hessain - Your engine is definitely the inspiration for how mine will look!
