Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
I plan to boost the 5.3 and once I figure out all the ins and outs of turbos and "electronic" tuning I plan to build a 427 LSX based with a big single to do the same things you are talking about.

Who is building your hot and cold side piping? I love the idea of going turbo but don't know how much all the piping would set me back.

I plan on doing it. Check out Columbia River Mandrel. They even have 2.5" or 3" to T4 adapters.

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
You shouldn't need anything bigger than 2.25-2.5 going to the turbos. A lot of people have been doing 2.25 as they say it helps with a quicker spool up and doesn't hurt top end power.
If you have never drove a good turbocharge engine I'm sure after you make your first clean run under boost you will never want anything else. I had a 76mm set at 10psi on an lt1 383 and loved it over a 200hp of n2o and that's why I have twin 61's for the 383 going into my truck. |

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
I am told dual 2.5" will support about 2,500hp on a hotside.
I am going to be using Columbia Mandrel for my piping. Since my heads have a 1 3/4 exhaust cross section, I need to go 1 7/8 OD primaries. CM makes a 1 7/8 x 4 collector to a 2.5" but nothing smaller. This is what I will be using with their 2.5" to T4 adapter. The turbos are more or less going to sit above the control arms so there won't be a lot of tubing anyway. The collector is going to be welded directly to the adapter and mounted to the turbo. With the 418" motor I don't think 1 7/8" and 2.5" up pipe will slow spool that much being how close to the head port they will be. Plus, I plan on spinning 7,400+ and still using a decent sized converter. In addition I have a t-brake and 2 step. I have no doubt this thing will spool plenty fast.

Turbo tech is obviously moving fast! Cam selection is still a bit of black magic though. I have my thought there too. But will find out some day.

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
That is really surprising to me that they are moving to such a small hot side when you start building big flow volumes like this. Just seems like at some point the spool-up advantage is going to lay waste to the potential total flow. I mean only so much is going to flow out even under presure and exhaust being a expanding gas as it leaves the motor. I know it is a whole new ball game when you start force feeding the induction with 10-15+psi. and exhaust back pressure becomes more and more insignificant. But there has to be a serious WALL where you can only stuff 15 pounds of $#!+ in a 5 gallon bucket until it backs up in the pipe.
Turbo tech is definately WAY out of my arena,, I have a buddy who is a Mechanical specializing in pump stations. Maybe he can 'splain' it to this ol dummy N/A guy in a old-school way i can rationalize. Is this scenario hold true in a max-effort TT motor, or more towards street-strip-driver TT motors???

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
Marv,
One thing I have learned by reading through some of the BS, gasses in a forced induction system are much hotter. Gasses at this temp move much faster and you can get more volume through a smaller pipe as temp goes up. So keep it smaller than you'd think to the turbo. After that, as the gasses cool, they expand and a big huge 5" pipe can't hurt. Things I don't know for certain: Stepping piping after turbo has benifits.. 3" to 3.5" to 4" to 5" Overlap is deemed bad in turbo set ups, yet negative or 0* overlap does you no good. Seems like somewhere from 10-20* @ 0.050 is good. IVO BTDC is not desirable How does IVC affect desired RPM? Is a large split with big exhaust bias a pro or con? Compression isn't always a bad thing, I will be running aprox 10.5-1 static. BTW did you see the Hyd Roller write up in Car Craft this month? When I read it I thought of you

If you guys like to read a lot you should check out the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell, it has a lot of good info and theory.
Maximum Boost: Designing, Testing, and Installing... For help on the cam questions you need to get with LilJohn on Yellowbullet or ls1tech, he's good with stuff like that! |

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
You shouldn't have to rev it that high to make that level of power especially with a pair of large turbo's. You really should be spending your reading time at www.theturboforums.com there is so much info there but sometimes you get too many answers that just doesn't seem to be right and when that happens I go to the manufactures websites instead. I only plan to run 5 pounds of boost thru a single GT45 ebay turbo on a bone stock 5.3L truck motor thru a carb and instead of an air to air intercooler I plan to run a water to air setup instead. You might want to think about keeping some of the N20 stuff for race day to spool up the turbo's faster.
This site has decent pricing on what they sell: http://www.frozenboost.com/index.php...119a50dbb7fa16 for the accessories.

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
I won't be starting the turbo build for some time. There are a few things I want to change before I even think about it, and all of those cost money
The biggest thing I want to change before the turbos is the front suspension. I'd hate to fab up piping only to have it hit the new set up I plan on going with. The other items are: Trans - back to a built 80E (I think) Rear - to a 9" which I am in the process of But we are going to keep leaning on this thing until then.

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
Sweet times, how fast do you want to go?
I plan to use a gt45 on my 5.3 and shoot for mid to low 10s. I am going to "learn" with cheaper parts and then build a real motor and use real turbo(s) and shoot for low 9s and all the while driving to and from the strip and anywhere I want to during the week with good gas mileage. Going to try and use stock rear suspension w/caltracs and bolt-in IFS front suspension, 4l80e and 9" with 325/50/15 drag radials.

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
Don't take this the wrong way bc I love the look of the truck but are you going to ever do paint and body work on the truck? I go back and forth on mine all the time when it comes to paint and body. I like the "beater" look but then I see some pretty trucks and well you know.

Re: My build thread.. 63 LS powered C10
I know I don't need the A to W intercooler but if I decide to sell my ten second El Camino later on I will already be set. Besides, it will help the most on the road trips to Cali I plan to make over the mountains and the desert heat so any little extra drop in temps will help.
