What about something like a 4x4 cross over steering? Except maybe cross under steering.

A center steer from a 94ish Dodge intrepid would be correct.

They mount to the firewall, but the tie rods cross over the crossmember. This one's in my GMC, but I don't think I'm gonna use it. Let me know if you need any dimensions or anything.

Great tip! Thanks! I will look into those. I'd really like to stay manual if I can.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

if you need a RHD rack, i have one sitting in the clip i got for my 20V swap still. i'd be willing to donate it

also you could look at a 84-87 RWD corolla. some of them had manual racks that are pretty thin. also Techno Toy Tuning has an adapter that allows you to use an 84-87 MR2 manual rack in those corolla's so i'm sure it can be adapted to your needs

i forgot to mention i saw a rack setup that uses the center links like you have posted in your pics in one of my latest superchevy or chevy high performance mags for camaro/nova. i gotta go find the add when i get home but i'll post a link if they have it.

FF I saw a few ads for a similar set-up to what you are looking for, the Unisteer system (unisteer.com) and Flaming River has a few systems too. Just thought I would mention it.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Thanks. You are absolutely right. I am currently working with Unisteer to design a custom rack. They are a little behind the curve though (or at least the rep I'm dealing with is). Their custom rack spec form only applies to end-steer (conventional) racks yet they insisted I fill one out. So I modified their form to apply to a center-steer rack and gave them my specs. Waiting to hear back...

I might try Flaming River if Unisteer fails.

Glad to hear it, figured you were already on it from the looks of the build. Good luck with the set-up, hope you get something figured out soon.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

I may have some more info for ya FF. This weekend I had to change the hydraulic throw out bearing, (slave cylinder), in our beater. ( 95 Chevy Beretta).
Anyway while I was in there I noticed it has a center steer rack similar to the Intrepid one woodwright posted. Dunno if it'd help ya out any but I thought of this thread when I seen the beretta rack... LOL

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Well, I have "someone in the industry" dealing with Unisteer for me now. It seems they are undermanned in a big way. Had to pull some strings to get things moving with them. Actually he offered and I am very thankful.

The Baretta rack is rear steer I believe, just like the cavalier. The center take-off (as I have learned it's called) is indeed what I am looking for. But if you use a rear steer rack as front steer you get reversed steering

Progress slowed over the last couple weeks. Been working tons of OT at work which is great for the toy budget, but bad for toy time...

My straight die grinder also died which has slowed the DS inner fender work.

I should post pics of the header work I did.

I also did some work on the steering column/firewall passthrough.

Boxed the lower link brackets on the rearend and installed it again.

Plasma cut a hole to fit the S2000 shifter in the Minx floor hump/tunnel.

...and continue to pursue a steering rack...

Yep, you are correct. the beretta is rear steer. I forgot about where you needed the rack placed.

Come on, where your sense of adventure.... reversed steering would just take a few minutes to get used to...LOL And nobody would steel it, (and get away with it that is)...hahaha

And the search continues.... I tried...LOl

Mike
I know this is a little off the base but today I almost ran off the
road looking at what appeared to be your exact same car
same color same red trim and wheels. Hard to believe. It was in excellent shape.looked fully restored or very good original.
If I hadn't been going the opposite direction I would have chased him down.

Haha! That's awesome! That's probably the only other one like it in the country (paint scheme and all). It may have been badged a Hillman (same car, different name). Very cool that you noticed

The whole point of that header work was to tuck it in tighter. Worked out pretty well:

Added a little boxing to the lower link brackets:

Playing with shifter/tunnel placement:

Orange on the steering wheel is just tape for protection:

...and a possible placement for a clue to what it's packin
