The longer the track bar, the less arc it travels and the less side to side movement of the axle occurs.. See........ longer is better
The 64 axle has a bracket welded to the housing which the track bar mounted

The 69 had a stud pressed in the upper right corner of the casting. I drilled and pressed out the post and only the hole remains. The panhard bar would have been shorter, and I have a 72 bar which would have fit, But I liked the idea of the longer bar , which is a necessity for lowered trucks..

I made it adjustable so the length could be changed if needed to center the axle under the truck.
When you have the front wheel alignment done they should measure the thrust angle of the rear and see how true and square the frame is and if rear axle is mounted square in relationship to the front.

Have you ever followed cars traveling done the road that have been badly wrecked? They now travel a little sideways down the road with the rear tires tracking offset from the path of the front tires. The frame is bent from true square the rear axle is mounted at an angle.

That's how I drive my wifes Ford. Mines short. I'm screwed. I was thinking it was more for trucks on air bags. Ones that move a bunch. I know the angle make a difference. See how mine is flat. I think it would handle better if I had better angle? I think mine even hits the diff cover.

I know with air bags the axle moves back and forth under the truck as things go up and down. the track bar tries to keep it centered but the arc as the track bar moves shifts the axle.
If the track bar is longer= less arc of movement up and down =less side to side movement of the axle under the truck

I need to quit throwing things away. I had one of those brackets that attaches to the swing arm. I cut it off when I did my four link. I'll have to look around. I need a longer trac bar.I want to be like Bubba. You know whats weird My axle doesn't look like your 64 axle? I wonder If mine has been swapped already.

Having your panhard bar parallel to the axle tube at ride height is what you want.

Took a test drive in the warm 55*F sunshine this afternoon. Been raining too darn much and everything is well saturated and starting to slide.
Spent the holiday reattaching the emergency brake cables and torquing everything down.
Drove smooth but I ordered new gas shocks and they won't be here till tomorrow, So it bounces really bad with no shocks. did not go too fast, but all is working well.
I did install all new rear brake shoes and hardware, the drums were still nice so they were not turned and are still in tolerances. The old shoes were about half worn , but now I won't have to do them again for a while.
I will order the proper speedometer drive gears in the morning. It will be nice to have the speedometer accurate again.

Got the new rear shocks installed. Pulled the driveline back off and the tailpiece off the transmission and installed the new speedometer gears . I also pulled the pan cover off the transmission and put on the shiny chrome pan and siliconed the darn gasket so maybe it will stop leaking transmission fluid everywhere.
I ran out of time for a drive tonight ,So tomorrow is the test drive.
Daughter wants to take it to school for a while as long as the roads are clear of ice and snow.

I was not happy with the 64 park brake cables that I got from LMC -they are imported, cheaply made and not the same length, And one of them was wearing through the liner already and not releasing the brake shoes. I ordered the 67-72 park brake cables from NAPA which have better mount on the trailing arms. A lot better quality even if they are imported also. I cut the LMC 64 cables apart and bought a pair of cable thimbles and two eye bolts and re-did my E-brake. All works great now.

Road test..
The new black drive gear (an 8 tooth) was .025 bigger than the tailshaft of the transmission and was quite loose and wobbled , so the retaining clip fell out less than 4 miles from the house and the speedometer quit. PIA.
I need to get back with Summit for a return. Darn imported metric tolerances anyway
But, the 8 tooth drive gear with the 19 tooth driven gear were exactly spot on until they quit working when the clip sailed off...

I put the old purple 10 tooth gear back in with a 22 tooth driven gear with a old Stewart Warner .974 reducer that I had, and it is pretty close. At 63 MPH reading on the the speedometer it is an actual 60. A little fudge factor might help avoid a ticket someday..

Each tooth of the speedometer gear added or subtracted is 5% of the actual speed. I should have a 23.6 tooth driven gear ,(mathematically calculated with a 10 tooth drive gear, 26.1" tires and 3.07 axle ratio).
The less teeth on the driven gear raises the speed registered. Since they do not make a 23 tooth I am SOL. So,if the 22 tooth is 5% high (3 MPH at 60) and the reducer knocks it back down about 2 MPH(at 60) , I think it is close enough for me .


The truck got to run errands Sunday night and daughter took it to school Monday and today. So it has had about 80 miles work in three days.
The new 3.07 rear axle works great. No loss of low end power and I was up to 65 MPH on a state highway.. no tach yet so I do not know what RPM it is turning but it is a noticeable difference.


On to the next project . Was enough money in the E-bay / PayPal account for a Holley 7448 350 CFM 2 barrel carburetor. This is a 2300 model which is basically a 4160 with out secondaries .
Is a Holley factory new but reconditioned carburetor. Any warranties or returns get reconditioned even if never been installed and then are sold on E-bay. At a lot less than new prices also.. @ Holley Performance-- Nice to know that they are not trying to resell them as new products again.

Looks just like my carb Bruce. One thing I did do to it though. There's a little black spring loaded button on the inside of your manual choke assembley. It's there to keep your choke held wide open. I removed it cause I've always had problems with the choke lever being hard to move and my cable always slipped. Had same prob over the years on other manual choke holley's. When you move the arm so the choke is wide open you'll feel it snap into place. You might not need to remove it. Just one of the little things I did to save me problems down the road.

Good things to Know, Geezer,I had felt it snap into place , just as you described.
I will probably re-jet a size or two lower just due to the elevation here. Since I have a cam and low vacuum , I may need to change the power valve also.
I will see what the vacuum is with the new Offenhauser installed. It was 11" hg at idle the last time I checked. The install instructions say that idle vacuum divided by 2 is close to the the power valve size required. It comes with an 85, I should think a 55 or 65 to start with if the vacuum is constant after the intake installation.

Thanks Alan, It is a blast to drive and EVERYBODY notices it and lots of waves and thumbs. It is not finished by any means but it is moving. I hope to start the body work in the spring. A primer bomb by the summertime

Had a great turnout at our Southern Idaho meet and greet breakfast. 13 members and guests , and enough drivers to have a little show in the parking lot.

So now that the meet and greet is over, The stock intake is coming off and the Offenhauser Intake with the new Holley carburetor is next project

Hey Bubba looks like a good turn out and the weather was fair. It snowed an inch up here but was melting by afternoon. Progress has been slow around here caused by the whims of the money GOD, been mostly little things that put a stop to progress. Would like to get the GMC painted this spring, getting my shop in order has taken more time & $$ than I thought. But as they say; one day at a time.....Vernski

Made a speaker box to get them out of the front floorboard. The were in a cardboard box on the transmission hump. (Sony speakers)

I used a scrap of sheet metal angle to screw to the lip under the window and made the box from a little scrap plywood and some fiberglass and it turned out pretty good. Sound is a little muffled through the seat, but I have a pair of Boston Acoustics to put under the front dash to help out the sound.


Not too exciting progress but it is still progress. It has been too cold to get motivated and the truck is back to daily driver status.
Hurry up spring and warm weather!!!
Anxious to get started on the body work.

Progress is progress no matter how great or small. Warmer weather is right around the corner. We've been in the 70's here. Not bragging or anything.
