Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
Had the truck running some last night. Runs great although a little loud without the exhaust system. And none of the electrical issues that I used to have before this project (like all the lights and power to everything just shutting off from time to time, then coming back on).
I am having a challenge with the power steering though. Maybe it's because the gear box has been dry for 6 months, I've let it run for a while and tried to work the wheel back and forth some, but I only have power steering when I turn right?

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
Is it a new pump or gear? Thinking maybe something worng with one side of the circuit?
If you take the weight off the front end, fill it with fluid, let it sit maybe 10 minuites to get all the air out, then with the truck off, move the wheel lock to lock 15 or so times, that should ensure all the air is out and should be good. Glad you had it running and with only a minor hiccup. Sarge

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
I never had one work on one side only but I did have a similar problem with a 76 after putting in a 350, it had a 6 cyl. before and etc. and once back together ps wouldn't work. We done exactly as listed above, jacked it up, ran it back and forth several times with the cap off the ps pump and all was well.

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
It very well could have an air pocket in it or the worm gear or something could be rusty from sitting without fluid while torn apart.

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
Well I got a bunch of work done on Cletus today. I tried the trick of jacking up the front end and running the wheels back and forth. No difference. Power steering is spotty at best. I also have no pedal on the brakes. After bleeding the brakes twice I'm starting to think I have a bad Master Cylinder. I was hoping to take the truck to the local muffler shop to be fitted with an exhaust system tomorrow, but with no brakes/steering I'm going to hold off till I get those issues resolved.
I also got the interior put together today. Just missing a couple of trim pieces on the doors. But we'll have her together soon!

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
Good progress! I would try to bench bleed the MC before buying a new one. I had a truck apart for an extended period of time and could not get the air out of the system until I removed the master cylinder and rebled it on the bench. Good luck - almost there!

Looking very nice. Keep up the good work. Atleast someone is getting something done on their projects. Because I know I haven't.

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
Thanks guys. I'm having horrible problems with the brakes though. I need some advice. I have bench bled the MC, then all the brakes, and no pedal. Then I replaced the MC with a known good one, bench bled, then bled all brakes. No pedal. I checked for vacuum to the booster and there is definitely suction on the line going to the booster. No fluid leaks anywhere. I'm flummoxed. Anyone got ideas?

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
i had friend went through something similar. It turned out to be bad SS brake lines. They were letting air into the system but not leaking any fluid.

Thanks, but that is a very scary answer considering I used all new SS brakes lines on this build. I guess I'll go around and double check that they are all good and tight, and if I find anything lose I will re-bleed the brakes (again).

Re: 86 k 20 project "cletus"
Hmmmm could it be your proportioning valve? If you try to pump up the brakes do you get a brake warning light (and slight clicking sound from the valve)? That would indicate a difference in pressure front/rear, which might help you pinpoint the problem.
When I bought my truck the PO said he couldn't get the brakes to bleed, and I sort of chuckled. Then I couldn't make them bleed either.... I had to bench bleed the crap out of the MC and then used a motiv power bleeder to push new fluid through the whole system. It has worked like a champ ever since. I left the MC full with plugs in when I installed it after the bench bleed, and very quickly pulled the plugs and installed the lines, then immediately slapped the power bleeder on and bled the system.

I don't think so. I am consistently getting air in the line in the rear brakes. No visible leaks so I have to figure out what the deal is.
