I haven't worked in a parts store in 10 years and I still have to school those guys from time to time. I've found they argue less when I pull up in the orange bomb. My local O'Reilys has a bunch of older gearheads behind the counter and they know me so we usually dispense with the "what is it for" interigation. The greeting is usually "what are you trying to do now"! And they let me go behind the counter to recon on my own too.

i've used the same o'reilly's for years (absorbed murry's years ago).
they rotate counter people as often as i rotate tires.
it does help when i have truk in the front window, i can just say ''that''.

Ogre, I made some wire looms (that get wires into the doors) that are similar to yours (but of course not quite as good as yours!). Can you give me some ideas as to how you made the plastic bushings in the fronts of the doors, and how you mounted them?

i made a round hole in the door with plenty of clearance. for the bushing; i used some 1/4'' plastic that i cut a 3x3 square from, then drilled a 3/4 hole in it and filed it square and snug on my 3/4 square wire loom. it is stuck to the inside of my door with 3m double sided tape. that's it. post a pic when you have them done.

you should have pm'd me, i drew those up in autocad and could have sent you the drawings with measurements, using material from home depot.

Since you wanted a photo I had to polish them. What a difference!



I also decided to make a floating gasket out of two squares of a plastic lid and two screws:



(Wow, that pic's a little fuzzy, but you get the idea.) The plastic that shows has through holes and the one inside the door grips the threads. I'll tighten the screws until the gap between the plastics is the same as the thickness of the door sheet metal. The square tube will hold the gasket square.

Home Depot had the square tube, but no 1/4" x 2" aluminum stock. Same at Lowes, Ace Hardware and Brandt's Hardware here in town. My buddy did, however, have a piece of 1/4" x 1-1/2" stock so I used that. That cut down the real estate for the screws so I had to use #6-32 flatheads, but it worked.

not much room in between the door and the jamb on these trucks.

That's funny. Not to hi-jack, but I went to a new Advance Auto parts store recently and there were two women working there. I asked for a foot of 1/4 inch gas hose, and got the typical "What kind of car is it for?". As she started to the keyboard I said it's for a 1987 Craftsman leaf vacuum. She hesitated for a minute but didn't want to appear dumb, so started trying to find it on the computer. She couldn't find it so finally said they didn't have it. I said yes you do because I see it, LOL. There was a rack with different sizes of hose right behind the counter that I guess she had never noticed.

I have a real problem when I read your stuff, Ogre -- it's hard to beat the ideas you have! My truck now looks like Son of Truk (except from the rear). And ya know, that's not all bad!

FWIW, my plastic gaskets are 2" x 2". The rectangular hole is just over 3/4" tall (just to fit over the tube) and 7/8" wide (to allow for the changing angle of entry of the square tube). The two screws are about as close to the interior corners as practical, about 3/16", on the diagonal line through the corners (not critical).

The hole in the door is 1-1/4" square. This compensates for the riding up and down of the tube when the door opens and closes (vertical), and to make room for the screws through the plastic (horizontal). (I recommend "sneaking up" on the final size by first fitting the square tube alone, then adding the plastic gasket.)

Also, I added a 1/8" long piece of electrical wire insulation on each screw (between the plastic parts) so the metal screw doesn't scratch the paint as it rides up and down.

i actually wanted OGRE in a personalized tag, it was already taken by some sick individual. my 09 sierra has truk tag, i had to make this one 58 truk. truk makes a lot more sense if you spell it backwards

I could not make out the name on those brackets on the radiator cover. Were they made by Nortel?

not sure what brackets your referring to 4544speed.
the radiator and fan shroud came from us radiator
the radiator cover is fiberglass from ogre manufacturing
the L-brackets are bent 10 ga steel

I was giving you a hard time over the brackets because they look like some telephone equipment. I thought you might have been a retired telephone man. You would have known what I was talking about.

This is a great build thread and I really admire you fiberglass skills. I have an old vette and should invite you down to help out on that disaster.

You have done a tremendous amount of work to your truck.

i googled nortel after i posted that reply and figured out you were giving me a hard time.
ogre needs a new project, bring by the vette if it's old enough (and the title)

Do you have pictures of this step by step process of the smoothing of the cowl vent for us amatures...?

as an amateur myself (working around pros), the text pretty much explains it.
blast, smuck, weld and sand.
you can see where the original screws still hold the cowl vent down
the only thing i can add is to screw the wiper bezels in to hold the panel tight to the cowl when you weld the sides.
as my post states "not much to it, really''
