Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

The next day, after spraying the bed, I was able to move the winch from the gantry and bolt it down to the floor so I could drag the Devil back into the garage again and drop the bed onto the frame for the last time. Was a quick and painless one-man operation with the remote on the winch.

After that, I worked on the bottom half of the hood, stripping off paint around the edges, and then treated the bottom with Ospho. Ospho converts rust to black iron phosphate, so it is ready to paint. In this case, we will use bed liner if there is enough left over from doing the bed, or at least spray with 3M undercoating.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I knocked down the SEM high-build primer once more with 240-grit wet and dry on a DA sander with soapy water to get it ready for a few coats of black DTM high-build primer. While that was drying, I pulled out the tailgate to see what needed to be done to get it ready for color. On the tailgate backside, we are just trying to knock out some of the big uglies so it can also get sprayed with bed liner and look halfway decent..

The hood and the tailgate will be the last items to get painted, wrapping up the painting on the project. There is light at the other end of the tunnel!

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Spent the morning doing one more round on the backside of the tailgate. While the filler was drying, I removed driver's side fender to adjust the door slightly up and forward. Also needed to do this because I usually put doors on with unpainted hinge bolts. Then once I get it the way I want I change out bolts one at a time with painted ones. I use the fingers from latex gloves over head of bolt to help retain the paint on the heads.

Then I worked on getting the last few items ready for under the hood wrap up. Need to plug in the new engine wiring harness, mount the alternator, install the belts and new hoses.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Finalising the last of the wiring modification, like adding the Auxiliary battery harness, heavy-duty front light relay, and extending the alternator wiring to cross over the top of firewall to the alternator on the passenger side. Picked up a few 3/8 by 4" carriage bolts for bolting down the bed and organising a few more items stuffed away in boxes that go on the Devil. Scheduled the front windshield install, since over the years I broke a few attempting to install and dont need that happening with one that gets the stainless steel trim.

Pic 1 - shows the new shoulder bolt and connection to the NP205 transfer case
Pic 2 - shows the install of the chrome transfer case shifter and custom shift plate
Pic 3 - extending the alternator wiring to cross-over firwall to passenger side
Pic 4 - auxiliary battery harness install
Pic 5 - install of the passenger side windshield washer bracket and the heavy duty headlight relay system

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I have been working on some small items, like bending up a new gas line that goes through bottom of cab, changed out the old key chrome bezel with a newly purchased one. Then knocked out a few more areas on the hinges before painting, installing the visors and prepped and re-coloured the worn and browning visor clips.

Out of all of those items, the visor clips gave me the most issues. I went through the typical steps of cleaning with soap, roughing up a little with a gray Scotchbrite for a better paint bite. Sprayed with adhesion promoter and a few coats of SEM color. After a few hours curing, I went back to it and it had all kinds of fisheyes on the large surface area that you see. According to the TPS, you need to wait 24 hours of cure time before sanding or doing anything else with it. So the following morning, I stripped it of all the color, wiped it down with some alcohol and a round of wax and grease remover. Then treated with an adhesion promoter, and then sprayed again with color. After each coat, I slightly hit the piece with a heat gun to help set it. Finally, after three tries, I can mount it in the cab.

Items in RED are completed.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

A few more items were started the next day, and a few more were completed. So one of the items that I wanted to get out of the way before re-installing the seat was to get the brand new from LMC headliner and headliner trim installed. A few months back, I re-colored it with the used door panels so that everything would look fresh and the same tones. When I flipped over the headliner I noticed that the material it was made out of had a waxy surface on the back. I did a little head scratching and knew that I would have to get that removed before any glue or adhesive product would work. Just to test my theory I had some super strong 3M double stick trim tape to test with. I tried to get a small piece to stick and that was a no-go.

Did some poking around and found somewhere on the interweb that the headliner backing was ABS and the back needed to be sanded to get rid of some of the waxy mold release so it can be installed. I grabbed some sandpaper and went to town on it.

Now that it was ready for install, I thought it would be cool to write a little note to Kenny AKA "Bestview" here on the forum. I grabbed the closet paint marker I had on the table and wrote a little appreciation note. Grabbed the 1.5 inch Velcro and spaced it out about every 6 inches. Tied a few pieces of string through the windshield opening and the rear window opening so that I could suspend the headliner up in the area where it needed to be installed. Then I put a few pieces of blue tape to mark the center line on the front and back, as well as the center line on the cab. Climbed in and it went super smooth and installed in about 1 minute.

Installing the headliner trim was a pain in the ASS. The crews sent for the Center areas of trim were way to short. The design of the clips really sucked also. What I did to make it a little easier was to add tape to the trim part where the clips were on backside and also tape on cab with marks to know where the openings and the screw holes were. Again no fun, but it is done and it looks good.

My pleasure, and if that is a birth defect, then it is a good one.

Worked on a few more small items at the end of the day. Removing the non-painted door bolts one at a time and replacing with freshly painted ones. Again, I just cut off the fingers from the latex gloves and pulled them over the socket so I can tighten them down without messing up the paint.

Then fitted some of the rubber to the doors, cleaned up the dusty sill plates, and installed the door bumpers top and bottom.

More very nice work. I have some ospho but haven't used it yet. Do you do anything to the ospho after its cured? It always looks very rough in pics etc. That glove finger trick is a good one. I'm going to start using that. Thank ya!

Thanks for the mention. Yes, the Ospho converts rust to iron phosphate, a black metal. I usually try to hit the areas I am using Ospho on really well with wire brushing and some sandpaper on a DA. After the Ospho has converted the surface, I usually just hit it again lightly with 320 to 400 grit wet dry on a sander and then clean and go right to primer. I used it on the bottom of the hood because of the surface rust and also because I am going to either treat it with bed liner or 3M undercoat.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I was able to check off a few more items from the checklist and add a few more to the list. Installed the starter and built the heavy-duty negative and positive cables on the drinker side of the truck. Need to get the last few items plugged in so I can see the cab lights glowing......its killing me. A few more items on the list that are about to wrap up as well a few others that are in the works.

Started to work on cleaning up and getting the trim looking a little better. The trim comes from some that Bestview provided, some that I acquired over the years, and a few found here and there. A few pieces had two layers of woodgrain, some had been restored and painted before, and a few were pretty original ones. I had a few that had auto body filler on the back, which they used to stick the mounts to the trim with. I heated them with a heat gun a finally was able to get that cleaned up. The ones with woodgrain turned out to be the most challenging, getting the woodgrain off with heat and the sticky residue off with Acetone and steel wool.

Spent about a day and a half just getting them cleaned up. I will spend a little time getting some of the larger dings fixed so that it looks halfway decent. After I get the satin black painted this evening and it cures, I will get the new wood grain installed. Then, onto the other side of the truck, and repeat the process.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

The driver's side lower trim is all taped up, and the second round of Satin Black paint is curing. Hoping to get the woodgrain on later today. Moving on to the upper trim clean-up and taping.

Also, will be working on a few interior items and possibly tackling the rear window install and the rear cab paint separator band install.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Spent most of the day on Sunday chasing down bad wires under dash and replacing with new. Replacing a few fuses and hunting down the proper electrical connectors and proper colored wires, glad to be a hoarder when it comes to these truck parts. Also waiting on the paint from the lower side trim to cure enough to get a piece of woodgrain on.

By the end of the day, I was able to untape one piece of trim, apply the woodgrain, and temporarily tape it on for a picture.

Looking great! Where did you source the woodgrain tape?

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

While waiting on the lower trim molding to cure, I thought I would wire up the cab lights to the light switch and make them glow. That turned into a two-day deep dive on the wiring harness and fuse block inside the cab. First off, I admit this is an area that I am not really good at, but willing to gain the knowledge by researching and diving in.

First off, when I hooked up the cab lights and nothing turned on, I figured a bad light switch, so I happened to have an extra new one in a box, so I swapped it out. Still no lights. Probed it with a contact checker and had power to the switch. Still nothing, so I decided to just hot-wire directly and see the effect of the cab lights in the dark garage. Very impressed how it looked and can see why people that love cab lights, really love the cab lights.

So, since I could not get things to work properly, I decided to deep dive into the fuse block by removing, inspecting, and pulling each terminal out of the block and thoroughly cleaning and re-inserting it into place. I also keep going back to the forum for more knowledge, and I also viewed a few really good YouTube videos to gain some insight on how things work.

After all that I found a few things that needed to be replaced in the harness. Finished all the cleaning, and now I am in the process of putting all back together in a much cleaner and tighter harness. Hope to do some re-testing today.

As I was leaving the garage for the evening I turned around and snapped a picture of the Devil, thinking about how far it has come forward.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Started early in the morning, go after the electrical demons that were preventing the dome light/cargo light, and the cab lights to not work properly off of the headlight switch. I removed the fuse block from the firewall and expected the orange wire lead that is used as constant power from the fuse block to these items. Once I had the fuse block removed and split apart, it was apparent that the orange wire terminal was toast. I cut the wires and removed it from the fuse block, and soldered in another from one of the wiring harnesses that I have saved. Used a jumper wire I made up a few days ago, and jumped the red 12V power from the engine harness bulkhead to the fuse block, checked it with the multimeter, and we are in business. Spent some time putting it all back together for the fourth time, did some wire management, then smiled a little that the cab lights and the dome light were now working as they should.

Finished up by creating a heavy-duty ground cable from the motor to the frame, then installing a few copper ground straps that are 1/2" wide from the cab to the frame and bed to the frame. I hit the areas where the ground straps were installed with 120 grit roll-loc disc on my air grinder. Before we are done we will touch up those areas with a little black satin paint so they do not rust.

Also, if anyone here reading this thread knows what the terminal I replaced is called, please let me know. I would like to purchase a few new ones for future projects.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

After a few days of electrical work, I needed a few more quick wins to check off the list. I got the courtesy lights installed and working under the dash. Then installed the new pedals and stainless trim.

Spent about an hour cleaning the stainless trim for the back of the cab with CLR and #000 steel wool. The trim had a really thick calcium buildup, and it took a bit to soften and come off. Once I got it looking good, I hit it with a little Never-Dull, and that really made it come around.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Finished up on a few last-minute electrical items under the dash, like adding the new 6-circuit accessory fuse block, fixing a few more PO custom additions. Got the factory tach dash cluster all plugged in and looking like it should. Finished up with installing the cargo light and a few other wiring details.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

After some electrical work, I switched back to the lower driver's-side trim. Had one large piece that every time I sprayed it, the paint crinkled up on one end. I would sand it back down, then wipe with alcohol, and wax and grease remover. Did it again at the same spot, did it a few more times, and the solution was to wipe it all down again with Dawn soap and hot water. Added some woodgrain tape to the centers and re-sprayed two different parts.

The last picture is the Olive K10 I got about a month ago, took it for a spin to go get a few stainless steel screws I was missing for the dash. It is a fun one to drive and always seems to get the thumbs up from someone.

Hey Greg, Olive is a good old survivor truck.

Spent the day working on stripping all the woodgrain off of the other side of the truck's lower trim. Repairing a few pieces here and there by tapping out the big dents or dings. Scrubbed all the trim with a mixture of Awesome and Dove soap. So far that is working the best for getting the trim ready for paint. Lots of taping off so the paint can be applied to the right areas. Used a 1/8th inch pinstripping tape that I had from another project. This tape was crucial for the upper trim since the two middle raised areas don't get painted.
