Looked at it longingly while opening and closing the garage door to go to church, the office, the grocery store and kid's practice. Sigh.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
put my deluxe heater in got everything wired running ready for winter and then i noticed the head gasket started leaking , i even tried loosening each head bolt and torquing one by one and i thought it fixed but now it bubbles in radiator like soda pop fizzing ,and bubbles popping out 2 inches , the motor was sitting for almost 20 years after being rebuilt , so should be a easy head gasket do that this weekend

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I put the 4 speed floor pan in my 51 chevy today. Got the filler neck and tank to fuel line hoses in the mail today. I put the rebuilt carb on saturday. Just need to get the fuel pump in and my fuel system is complete. Also I got the passenger door glass channel out of the electrolosis tank and cleaned it off. That stuff really works on rust. ---Jack

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Well today I picked up my radio insert from the hydro dippers. That was my test piece to see if I was sure I wanted to follow through with my plan! And after seeing it I had to leave the rest of my interior with them, and no it's not skulls it's burl wood on a flat black dash with some SS highlights. I'm doing the trim around the windshield all three pieces. Interior light cover. Glove box door center, speaker grill and ashtray leaving the SS strips polished. The two long headliner strips and the radio insert. Eventually I might do the door trim around the windows. Once I get a little more progress I post a picture. I also started painting the interior so I can wet sand the dash and get her ready for a nice flat black finish! I just hope it looks as good live as it does in my head.

Bolted up the grille and surround so I could wire the front turn signals. Used a weatherproof trailer connector for easy removal in the future. Got one with extra leads for future running lights, winch control or?? Also wired up the trailer hitch and tail lights. Going to drop in a battery and check out the electrical systems soon.

Got my brake drums turned for the 10 bolt T/A rear end going in the truck, decided to order new axle bearings and seals to install while I'm at it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Installed front and rear sway bars on my 59, and installed a stronger return spring on the brake pedal(pita)(brake light was staying on and pedal just wasn't being brought back up), repaired a transmission leak, it's raining here and muggy
ps: I'm pleased to see Nick (mechanixman) doing creative stuff on his truck vs. living on a cell phone and texting all the time! Proud of you young man!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Thank you for the compliment~ I love compliments I bought them at Performance online (see link below). There are other places to buy them, but I've had good luck with POL, however their instructions were vague, but fairly straight forward installation.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Thanks for the link. That's pretty reasonable. Thought it would cost more than that.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Hi Denee!
So after having driven your truck for awhile now...I'm assuming you DO drive it somewhat regularly....are you still happy with the straight axle? Are you pleased with Sid's "package"? I seem to remember you had him install new kingpins. Modify your steering arm to address the bump steer issue, etc. have I got that right? Any recommendations IF I end up sticking with my I beam? If I do I'd have it dropped 3" OR use Posie Supersliders, or both! |

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Hi Dan! You ask a good question! I would think that my personal opinion of the way my truck drives compared to if someone else drove it may be totally opposite.
If you drove my truck, you may think it drives horribly, or not. Someone with a front clip from a Camaro may think my truck is unsafe for the road. I really have nothing to compare it with in regards to old trucks as I haven't driven an old truck. However, let's review what I have: Stock straight axle with new kingpins and tapered type tie rods, with front disc brakes. Front and rear springs are Posie 2 leaf. All bushing are new. I have the Saginaw ps steering gear, but with the steering gear itself mounted further towards the front than what the instructions said~ in hopes to reduce/eliminate bump steer. Oh, and a 6 degree caster shim recommended by Sid. For me, my only complaint is a little more steering seems to be necessary at slower speeds (5 - 10mph), but at 60mph on the hwy is quite nice, however correction is necessary and I feel like I wouldn't want to lean down to get something off of the floorboard in fear of changing lanes, but doesn't drive nothing my '10 Mazda CX9! As for bumpsteer~ I've never experienced bumpsteer so far, or say going down a bad street, and let's say the right front wheel hits a bump or bad spot in the road? My truck doesn't dart in any direction, it takes bumps very well with no ill affect in the steering wheel. My power steering in my opinion is just right! It's relatively easy to steer, but not ridiculously easy. Perhaps a smaller diameter steering wheel might be in order. The stock steering wheel from the doner car, a '73 impala, is kind of large in diameter(not like the original truck steering wheel though), but it's all I had at the moment and will stay there until further notice. Overall, I'm happy with the straight axle in that I have kept something original on the truck vs. just slapping a front clip in. I wish I had lowered the truck a little more, but that could be another project way down the road. Another note, I don't drive my truck that often, it's kind of a show truck per say. We drive it to special events, and on occasion I drive it to the parts store to get parts, but is not a daily driver. So for me, it's really just fine the way it is. Oh, I haven't driven it yet with the newly installed front and rear sway bars! You must evaluate what you have, what you actually want and what your intentions are of what you're going to do with your truck. Now is the time to do it, not after it's all together. Sorry for the long answer, but I give you my opinion and the best description I can for being a non-professional. dne' Quote:

I put the cab and bed for my 48 into the workshop today. Took some work to get it by myself, but everything out.
