Bootfair sucked today.

20p bowl.

Brand new ramp. £20.00 for mate Craig for his Messerschmidt three wheeler and bikes onto trailer.

Chevy T-Shirts, new £3.00 each
Crowbar fro Craig 50p
6 foot ruler £2.00 for a friend who collects measuring equipment

Not able to find any castors, so went to McDonalds for brekkie and a coffee till 09.00 and then to Tool Station for four casters at £12.50
Thankfully a painless purchase due to all the random other savings elsewhere.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

After I packed the tools away and came in, it was a choice of which beer first.

In the end it was Bud as Dennis suggested it was the better option.

Along with crisps and some dried sausage, I had a good evening.

This mornings search for Casters for the new welding trolley at the two Bootfairs I go to, ended up empty handed, so I went to McDonalds and had a breakfast wrap and coffee, to kill time thenoff to,Tool Station to get some casters as I could not find the ones I knew I owned.

£12.49 for four nylon casters in 75mm size.

I made a 10mm ply floor for the trolley base and then tried it for size.

Then also decided to make a decent hook onto which to hang all the cables when not in use.

While looking for some spare hooks, I found this little box......

Guess what was inside....?

Decided this would be a good option as I like the gear visually.

And welded, bolted in place.

Next up would be the frame and top table where the grinders would live.

More in a while.

Thanks for looking in.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Long day in London

With the “New Improved Train Service” it now takes me an extra 30 minutes door to door on my original 2 hr commute and my return trip is three trains including a 20 minute wait for one. Into London is two or three trains too.

Service is a word used in Animal Husbandry too.......... go Google that.

Got home and the only solution was garage time.....

After.

Took an old 32/36 ring spanner, removed an inch in the length

Glued together.

Welded to the front of the frame, which fitted under my welding table after I had modified the wheel mountings to gain 25mm for it to roll in there, rather than raise the table.

Spanner is a handle, but also place to hang my grinders when they are not used.

Second King Dick spanner added to stop them pivoting under the table.

Done

Paint next.

Floors got Matt black.

Frame, Red of course.

Two coats of red, done by 8.30 pm

And a photo taken this morning.

Assembled.

Yes, I am very pleased with the result

Cheap tools.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

As always, these forums do come up with various options.

I also posted the same question on General section of this forum and got various replies from the guys.

Check this thread for replies.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=766012

I am sure that between myself, @johnnybravo and @samta22 we will get some progress made, with minimal tears.

Sat in a two day business meeting at Heathrow in a closed in hotel conference centre, alll I am doing is moving truck parts and tools around in my garage I’m my head though

Roll on Sunday, as Saturday will be spent with Joy.

And a BBQ afterward.

Bought an extra bottle of gas as well, in case the one I have runs out.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Hi Rian, not been on here for a week or two so just catching up, the weld trolley looks great, very professional👍

I hadn’t realised how bad your speaker and stereo holes were, clearly marked out in crayon and cut out with a (blunt) can opener.

My only advice would be to cut out all of the damage if your patches are big enough and take your time getting the fit right before you go near it with a welding torch. Time spent up front will save you much more time later ( and I hate sanding filler )

I always enjoy your thread but it’s great to see the truck on it again 👍

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

One more quick update.

Welder trolley final assembly tonight, included the cable hook that I made yellow.

All done.

Though he died years ago, I think my dad would have approved as well.

Next time we see it, I may just be welding.

Thanks for checking in.

Bedtime soon as I have to get up at 01.00-ish to process the Briskett.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Friday morning on the way to work I collected a new bottle of 5% Argon/CO2 mix gas for the welder.

Late afternoon on the way home, I popped into my favourite Turkish butcher for some T-Bone steaks kebabs and smoked sausages.

Saturday morning I did lots of yard work, till 12.30 then showered and went over to Joy’s place.

She offered to drive......

What a pleasure.

She knows all the back roads and short cuts.

First stop was Tool Station to get a spare (no 3) angle grinder.

£27.00 for 750 watt.

After this we went shopping, then walked up to the poor side of town, and both had a Turkish mixed grill and a coffee.

Rather good, leaving us stuffed.

Then back to her place to walk Wyzz.

I went home by 10.00 pm as I was knackered.

Awake at 04.00 on Sunday after 5hrs sleep was not ideal

Then off to Bootfairs by 06.15

Bought for £1.00 this collection box was last used in 1931.

Couple of Tiki salt n pepper shakers for MrTiki.

£2.00 coin, bought with another medallion. Wonder if it is still legal tender.

Then homeward as I was expecting the MoJo Crew of JohnnyBravo, Samta22 and CraigRK.

Craig was here by 09.00offloading plastic pallets and the MoJo Twins parked up just before 10.00 am.

Coffee, biccies and a good hour long chat, strategising and planning ensued.

Then the slow walk to the garage.

It was on.

18 months since Craig and I rebuilt the brakes on the truck,on the 19th December 2016

Crazy, yes.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Once we were done chatting etc, it was time to go push the Chevy chassis and cab out the garage.

Did I mention it’s been 18 months.

The shy retiring JohnnyBravo behind the cab with Sam checking out the holes,

Mr Bravo loves to solve problems.

http://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/...heels-on-wagon

How do you draw a circle with calipers when there is no centre?

Create a bridge of course....

Once the bent metal had been pulled back to ground zero.

Sam double checking.

Then using a keyhole powerfile that I bought years ago, I cleaned the paint around the excess holes in preparation for the welding up.

Once the new circles had been screened, I welded up the holes outside the perimeter and then used the Dremmel tool to cut through the wasted steel.

At that point, Craig climbed in with a second Dremmel tool on the drivers side.

Flap wheel to tidy up the welded up holes

Once the holes were tidied, inside and outside, it was time to get the airline on the Joggler.

Joggler result at its best.

Recessed surface to allow for flat welding a panel in to cover space.

At this point the next step was to be measuring and cutting the patch panels.

More in a bit.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Next up, mark out the patches.

Cut out and tidy up.

In order to maximise fixing the new steel it was decided to drill 3mm holes and clean up the steel on both surfaces, than to puddle weld the patches in.

Craig held the steel in place for maximum contact and fit.

First series of puddle welds.

By 3.30 we shut shop as I had achieved all I wanted for the day.

And fire and beer sounded so much more interesting.

Packed tools etc away, pushed truck back and locked up.

MoJo Team.

JohnnyBravo, Samta22 and CraigRK chatting.

By 6pm the party was over as everyone had a fair distance to travel.

It’s really not enough to just say thank you, but that does sum it all up.

It was a great day to end a lovely weekend.

After the guys left, Joy came over for a couple of hours.

Thanks for checking in.

This week I will carry on with the welding and grinding.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Long, hot, tiring day at work.

Got home by 6pm, fed cats, got changed, set sprayer up on lawn with 60 minute timer and headed into the garage

Mickey popped over too, the moment he saw the door open.

I had decided that I will be doing repeated, no’s 2,3:4 of the edge welds to the steel patches, as I want to fit 3 point safety belts to the truck.

Cleared out the scrap cut out on Sunday

Mickey did the camera honours.

Round two done, two more to go.

Happy guy, yes.

Good to be back.

Having consulted Lugnutz’ guide on fitting these modern seatbelts it became apparent that I would need to s cure the patch panels fully before fitting a backing plate and mounting holes.

Tomorrow I have a date, so there won’t be any progress, but the next step will be to dress back the welds and correct any flaws before measuring out where the new s at belts will get mounted.

Thanks for checking in.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Had a dinner date last night, so only got 30 minutes to go down to the garage, between getting home, feeding the cats and having a shower before leaving.

Of course you can do “Something” in 30 minutes

Moved bike out of the garage and a couple of bits from the cab so I could move freely.

Grinder. With 80 grit flap wheel, not too aggressive if you handle it gently.

Original plug welds and holes all look a bit scruffy, but should fix OK.

One side done, more welding to be done next time to fill recess between patch and body panel.

Clean and ready for welder.

Other side done.

Looking forward to next chance to pull welder out.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Further to the weekend actions.

Withnmy usual insomnia waking me and being out the house by stupid-0-clock, I moved a load of tools, obstructions into my secure spare shed, yes I have that.

Leaving the truck chassis, Snapon toolbox and motorbike as the only three things that now need moving about if I want to weld and grind. Toolbox may head into the next door area of the garage too leaving even less obstructions to move every time I want to work.
I do like my garage so that I navigate in the dark, without killing myself.

This will mean that I can literally steal an hour here and there to do little bits of work.

Easy now.

No excuses.

Decorated the welder trolley and covered some damage on the toolbox with a couple of stickers, sent to me by Dennis in the USA and also Euan and Rogan.

Then a bit of welding, after doing my ironing for the last two weeks and some laundry.
Mixing the pink and blue jobs effortlessly here.

This was round no 5 of the welding, I am happy to attach a seat belt to the B pillars now.

Of course, while welding my helper, who has no bloody fear, had to come and inspect too.

Insisting on pointing out the faults.

Funny furry creature, weird how she loves being there where I work.

Maybe she is on standby to call an ambulance if I do something stupid

Finished the welding, not flattened the last welds back yet, had to shower and get over to Joys place.

Will be feeding the backing plate for the seatbelt mounts up the side from below.

Then tacking them in place for fixing the anchor points.

One of the things I fixed for Joys place was an old frame that needed glueing and clamping for a few hours.

I found the frame years ago, and could not see it become landfill so rescued it.

Now the plan is to mount it on the wall, and then create a collage of smaller frames inside it, all with the same theme.

Should look good once done.

My only worthy find at Sunday’s single Bootfair, was a small, pretty smoking pipe for my collection.

And lastly, some more of the weekends results, many more to go up, but planning, and mounting Joys lifetime of photos and family memories has taken time too.

More to come.

Hectic week ahead.

Be safe.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Well, it’s been a rough week so far.

Work pays the mortgage, but it does make one tired.

Dennis has seen progress.

He has started withthe floor joists (is that the right word)

Today I found a few bits in two places along the South Circular

A hardwood chair for my deck.

The coffee table already went to a new home.

Today a parcel came from Darkspeed......

125mm grinder to take the flap wheels my lodger gave me for the truck resto.

Thank you mate.

Headed back in this direction.

Loved this pic of the truck at the time.

It’s been a hot day.

Tonight even Dukey joined me for a couple of cold beers as it was too hot for the garage.

Dude, that is the way goes sometimes. I think everyone does that.
What I like even better is find something that I forgot I had and think I always wanted one of those.

At least you'r back in the shop making things happen and getting closer to truck stuff.

Agreed Vince.

I actually just laughed at myself when I found them.
I knew they existed, but had forgotten they had gone into a box on the shelf.
Was under the impression I had given them away.

And finding stuff is always good.

Just need to find the steering knuckle I lost in there a couple of years ago.

Thank you Bill,

I am pleased with the way it has evolved and come out.

Next up I cut and sectioned the top frame tubes by removing 300mm from it.

Then welded and ground it all back together.

Giving me a large potential table for grinders and accessories to be placed on.

I had been asked to feed back on this welder by a few people.

Well, after finishing my assembly, I called Neil of Rally Design to thank him for putting me onto this machine.

It makes welding a doddle, even for a numpty like me.

Penetration is great as is spread of the weld.

Once the top table frame was ready, with the steel supports welded in place the rest just took time.

Not that impressive turned over.

Wheel plates welded in and position of castors decided.

And job done.

I had to go feed Joy’s dog and cat as she is away for the weekend.

Also walked him.

Next up, paint frame, wood and make a top shelf for the trolley.

That’s all for now.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Looks good Rian it’s always helpful being able to move the welder around on wheels . Having a place to put the grinders will speed up the process when DOING THE TRUCK

Nice work on your welder cart. I too have been looking for an item that I know I have at least 2 of, but I am not buying another just yet. Moving sucks...
