Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Well today I finally did it. I got solar power for 2 of my houses. I think that that last $600 electric bill that I got last month pushed me over the edge. So we will see how this works out. Hopefully well. Fingers crossed. This company came highly recommended by my wife's friend who has it and the numbers made sense. If I can save money I'm down with that.
Hey!!!! I'm going green!! Yeah right. I'm just cheap. More money for me to spend on gas guzzling internal combustion engines. I don't hug trees but I have dated some tall women. That's kind of the same thing? Right? Don't tell them that I said that. I'll get my azz kicked. They're bigger than me.

Well, a good side affect is you'll be helping take strain off the grid for others. Probably feed some juice back in, too.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Went to Massachusetts for lunch today on the motorcycles. Lots of idiots on the road but it still was an enjoyable ride.
On the way up just outside of Copake NY there was a huge solar array that they must have put up this year as it wasnt there last fall. Great wonderfull thing green power , downside it was on what used to be a farm so now nice green fresh crops have been tilled over and rows of black ugly panels and from what I can find there will be panels on 220 acres as they are still building . The farm was over 800 acres and the company bought it all . So less local agriculture and livestock . So now we truck it in using fuel . So where's the gain ? I have no problem with solar power but keep them on roofs and commercial buildings and not use farmlands.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Not only are they ugly, but they can cause localized cooling or heating, depending on the location. It can really jack the ecology of an area to do this. There are schools around here, and the city Senior Center, that have solar panels providing shade in the parking lots. That makes double sense, since the the vehicles are shaded and won't need the AC as much, besides the power generated. People can park their EVs and charge their cars, too.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
The local power company around here put in about a 100 acre solar farm a few years ago, they were "Trackers" that rotate to the movement of the sun.
When straight up they are 4' to 5' off the ground, the weeds would grow, get tall and interfere with the panels, not to mention the F.D. on their a** for keeping the weeds down, so management whom evidently were all city reared boy's decided to bring in goats to eat the weeds down. Don't need to tell you what came next do I? Yep... the goats were jumping onto and destroying the panels. They now have a good "Roundup" spray program. |

Even more win. Except the sun out here melts the tar in the asphalt and helps it level out, until someone drives over it when its molten.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
It bothers me to see huge solar arrays ruining farmland. As if they don't do that enough with crackerbox houses. Shade fir parking lots is a great idea. So our emissions are causing global warming? How much affect do all the paved parking lots have on ambient temps? They certainly care about all the rainfall that lands on them. I have always wished there could be shade trees in parking lots. I always look for shade when parking in summertime. Parking lots are the hottest places on Earth!
I saw where they are beginning to install solar panels over canals in CA. There is a great idea. I know it's flowing water but there must be some evaporation happening. Shade it! I took my bicycle to the C & O Canal at Lock 54 downriver from Hancock, MD and rode into town, then on up river. I've enjoyed the Potomac River, canal, and towpath for many years, but they are all still growing on me. I guess the longer I'm here the more I look around. It's a lot more than a historic ditch along the river with a tow path and stone aqueducts at the rivers and creeks. I mean all that is cool and most people appreciate all that. But if you look around there is so much more to give a sense of it's history. The canal operated for almost 100 years and just like a hiway, life built up along the way with settlements, landings, mining operations, etc. I never thought about culverts for the lesser streams. For rivers and the bigger creeks they built aqueducts over. Basically a bridge that carried the canal. Those are way cool and some are still intact. The culverts are for the minor streams and a whole lot of work people just ride over w/o noticing now. They dug way down below canal grade to run the streams under the canal. They are stone masonry tunnels. A whole lot of highly skilled work for a no-name little stream to pass. Here are pictures looking through, looking out, and the stone slab it runs across on it's way down to the river This is the Tonoloway Creek Aqueduct looking upstream. It leads directly into lock 54. This one got the sides blown out from bad floods and USPS has built steel structure to support. This is a sample of the iron rail on the aqueduct looking upstream

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
This house stands at Lock 54. The owner built it when news of the canal came out. It served as an inn and sold supplies to those on the canal. This is not the lock house. That was over by the lock .
Looking downstream across the aqueduct toward the house and lock #54. The canal used a series of dams to assure water supply and lock #54 was just above Dam #6, which is no longer standing. Part of this stonework is a guard lock for the dam. The lower end of the lock Iron work for the lock doors let into the stonework

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
On my way back home I decided to hit the river & canal further downstream at Dam #5. It is not only still standing, it is still an operational power plant. Imagine getting your electricity from a power plant that is a National Historic Site. Last picture is the guard lock/overflow flume filled in

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Tim, I've said it before, but you have the privilege of living in the oldest historic part of America. It would be easy for someone who grew up there to give it little thought in daily life. I'm no history buff but I do appreciate the significance of the early settlements in this country we call the United States. Some of those pics are timeless it seems.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Yesterday sucked. My niece injured her knee, dislocated it and tore one of her ligaments about a month ago. Yesterday she was having a hard time breathing and had chest pain. After going to the urgent care, and then on to the ER, we found she has blood clots in her lungs. Left the ER around 1pm. Spent the next four hours trying to track down a pharmacy that had the blood thinners she had been prescribed. Finally got her back to my house around 5pm. It all started out at 8am.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
My buddy just bought a 68 Corvette Roadster project that's been sitting in a garage for about 4 years. He bought it from the previous owner since 1978's widow.
I went over today and helped get it running, we drained the tank and put a battery in it and got it running. It needs a lot of attention which was to be expected, fuel lines and carbs leaking but actually sounded pretty healthy, no misses/funny or not so funny noises. Still got lots of work to do to get it road worthy but will make a nice car. 427ci. 435hp 3x2 Holley's and a 4spd. It is a matching #'s Suffix Coded Motor he was happy to find it. |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
My crazy buddy came over with his new van. He got a great deal on it. It's an ugly 2000 Dodge Caravan but super clean and he got it for under 1000 bucks and he REALLY needed a better car. I was shocked that it was as nice as it was.
So he asks if I want to get a beer? Sure. Let's check out your new ride. MISTAKE!! I kind of forgot how bad he drives. His dog is in back barking its head off and he keeps turning around to tell it to be quiet. He isn't looking at the road. He's busy fussing with the dog and we narrowly miss a fence, some posts and a cliff. I thought. Well. WTH. I've lived a long time. This is it. I'm not getting out of this van alive. But I reassure myself that he always drives like that and he's never been in an accident. He is just so easily distracted and that dog just wouldn't shut up. We got home without a scratch. But it was a little nerve wracking. Never a dull moment with this guy. Nice guy, fun guy to hang with, but he doesn't have all his marbles.

That's a horrible day. pretty scary, too! What the heck is up with short supply of medications? I hope she is doing better now
It is and it is always there. 180 miles of it to explore different sections. Lots of wildlife along the river, too Quote:

4 new tires on one of the cargo trailers . I use the electric tongue jack to break the bead the one in the picture is the spare for the dump trailer . Then it’s just tire irons a flooring mallet to remove and install .

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
This is just sad . This trailer is a 2008 Cargo Mate 18 foot I bought it from a friend who used it as storage since new. It was never registered the dealer dropped it at his place and it sat there till I got it in 2020 . The original tires still have the nibs and ridges from the mold in the tread but plenty of cracks .
I towed it here and it hasn’t moved since . I use it for storage too
