Been off line for almoest a year which makes your progres look outstanding. I'm all cought up now and now I can see hwo you do such good work thansferring that wood working eye to metal shows. Forgive me for asking but did you spray that Loktite converter in the overhead of the cab? As a former sailer I have a natural aversion to rust. Hope to start a thred as soon as I get time.

This color is Detroit Diesel Green. Which is very close but not exact original. I am going for a hot rod style so it didn't have to be spot on for me and I was able to get the paint at the local O'Riellys

Thank you so much. I did not spray in the overhead cab. I wanted to as I don't want any rust but there is still some rust you can't see or get to. I did not want to take the roof off as it is a lot of work. I did spray a little in the front eyebrow area when I did the patch repair. I had a look inside and the rust wasn't that bad just mainly surface rust which is to be expected.

Always a pleasure, if you can get your hands on a under coat wand you can get up in that space. I have a kit I bought I'll send you the details tomorrow.

For those interested here are some pics of previous engines I have built.

This is the aftermath of the thrown rod on the engine I posted in T.J.'s thread. The #1 rod exploded at 6500 rpm in second gear. It sounded like a shotgun went off. Smoke blew out of the cowl hood and front fenders. I had to drive my dad's hoopty for about 6 months to save up for the next one.

Next engine I built was this one. Another 383 stroker. I used as many parts from the first one on this one. Pretty much the whole top end was ok. Took the heads all apart and cleaned them and had the valves and guides redone.

Not sure what I was thinking on the Yellow. It seemed like a good idea at the time. The 64' El Camino in the background was my dad's daily driver for about 15 years. It had a 283 in with a ton of miles on it. My dad drove it the whole time taking care of it while I blew up 3 motors in less than 3 years. What did I learn from this keep the motor stock if your going to drive it daily. Hence why the truck's motor is all stock and just looks like a hot rod.

The Yellow engine above had a couple of cam lobes go flat. This was the time when they had pulled the zinc from motor oils and no one knew. Obviously the old flat tappet cams still needed it. I didn't know anything just thought I got a bad cam from Edelbrock as they had moved their machining to China during this time.

So I finally built this engine. A 388 c.i. stroker. Again using what I could. It is in the Caprice right now. It had the cam go flat as well. I put a new Summit cam in it and got it running so I could move it from my house out to the big garage. As I pulled it in the oil pressure dropped to 10 so I guess this motor is toast now. It has been sitting patiently waiting my care since April of 2013. When I get finished with the truck I will give the Caprice some love.

Actually been a fan of big blocks my whole life but never had the chance to build one. My ultimate dream in engine is the LS6 454 from the 70 famous 70 Chevelle SS. My dream car.

Go the new radio put in the 95' Chevy today. Its nice to be able to play CD's and hook my phone to it. No more cassette tapes!

Also got the oil pan painted before I threw in the towel. No mockup picture. Had to repair one of the oil pan rail holes. PO broke off a bolt. I had to drill it out oversize and thread it for a piece of all thread. I locked it in with J.B. weld. Once it sets all week I will trim it flush use a transfer punch drill an new hole in the oversize all thread and rethread for the oil pan bolt.

Pan looks great. I'd love to add one to my truck, but I've got a GM Targetmaster 350 with dipstick provisions on both sides. I'll never been able to change pans because the engine mandates dipstick reliefs on both sides..

I had heard of these engines but never seen one. I would think you could make some kind of plug as it doesn't have pressure on it its just a hole going into the oil pan.

Ya I know 3M has a tendency to be that way, any way that wand has a 360* spray pattern so if you go through the wind-shied Pilars you should be able to get full coverage. JoAnne loves your woodwork, just thought I'd pass that on. The truck is looking great.

Thanks Bill,

Managed to squeeze in a few hours today. The youngest son has the Flu so spent the last couple of days helping the wife take care of him. I got all of the bottom end buttoned up. Pray for no leaks, but its a small block Chevy. They all eventually leak.

Here is the hole that had a broken off bolt. I drilled it out oversize tapped it to 3/8" epoxied a 3/8" bolt in it cut it off flush and then retapped it 1/4"

Put the pan on and put the 4 corner bolts in. Used a transfer punch to mark the center.

New one piece FelPro gasket, new melling oil pump and metal collared driveshaft and oil pickup installed. Also put a new FelPro rear main seal.

All buttoned up and torqued down. Had to do some clearancing on the front pan rail and several of the holes to get everything lined up perfect.

Got the top sprayed Classic White today. Was 72* what a perfect day it was for painting. Unbelievable in the middle of January.

Not bad for someone who has no idea what he is doing. I did get some runs on the back so I will have to sand those out and shoot the back again.

Good spray day has to be even better, getting it mid January.

The runs on the back of my cab looks like a shower door glass after a good shower, the rest of the truck is equally bad, so I know there is a load of prep ahead.

Your progress, despite a few setbacks, has been great, no doubt aided by your actual aspirations for doing the truck justice.

Progress! Looks good. I can't wait to start on my '68 GMC. I need to finish my new pole barn first. Today and yesterday is the first time in a couple weeks it's been above freezing or the teens for that matter. Keep up the good work.
