Re: Volt Gauge Conversion Kits

I was under the impression this was going to be a "how to" thread obviously it is not. I already purchased an 87 cluster to swap the gauges but am unclear as to exactly what I need to do. Is that something you can help me with? How much if I sent you both gauges and the tin?

Re: Volt Gauge Conversion Kits

Tom I installed one of your gauges last summer. I've seen this pictured reading quite a few times on the gauge and sometime sits just past the 13. Is this where it should be? My alternator and battery are new..

Hi Greg,

Very sorry for the delay. If you have a volt meter on the battery while running, you should get say 14.5 or so volts. That would be with a good alternator output at idle. I use a 12 v battery charger set on 10 amps which gives me about 12.5 volts and that is where I set the needle. It is possible the needle slipped or I was in a brain fart mode that day and placed it wrong.

What I see in your photo should be about 15.5 which seems a little high. Did you check it at the battery? Make sure your regulator is not sticking and causing an over charge condition.

If you believe that the volt gauge conversion is in accurate, you can send it back to me for an adjustment or I can send you just the gauge that is set up correctly and you can just swap it.

Let me know what you would like to do. I will accommodate you and make this right. By the way, no charge to you.

Thank you,
Tom

Re: Volt Gauge Conversion Kits

Hi Tom,

Just found this thread while searching for something completely different 😊
Anyway, I wanted to know if you still sell these conversion kits?
If so, could you give me an estimate on shipping to the Netherlands?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Volt Gauge Conversion Kits

instead of running a hot leg between the temp and volt gauge could I leave part of my circuit board in place and tape the other part back?

Re: Volt Gauge Conversion Kits

[QUOTE=Stephen717;8372064]instead of running a hot leg between the temp and volt gauge could I leave part of my circuit board in place and tape the other part back?[/QUOTE

If you are referring to the amp gauge portion of the circuit board, they are both live. If you trace it back to the connector, you could actually wire your hot into the number one or twelve location on the connector. For the other side, that does not get used by the volt gauge. If you have amp gauge wiring correctly, either number one or twelve can be de pinned so no power passes through. That way you can wire the volt gauge with the circuit board.

You can run power to the volt gauge by any means you feel acceptable for your purpose. As long as it has battery voltage an ground, it will work.

One reason I like to tag off the temp gauge is for trouble shooting. If the user has a failure of a volt gauge, the question is does the temp gauge and fuel gauge still work. They all share power. if they all fail, then it is a different approach to diagnose.

I provide everything needed to swap this into your truck and have a source to wire it.

Hope this helps,

Tom
