Re: Just another old truck.

Hello to all of you out there in cyber land. I'm just bouncing around from one little project to another in this show and tell forum. Its absolutely great seeing and watching all these projects grow. I spend at least an hour a day watching and reading the posts on all the different builds going on.

Here is another small one of mine from a few years back.

But first I'd to say thank you to Rich, Kim, Kees, and Mr. & Mrs. AD.

The first floor plate I made had to be two pieces because I put the column in first without thinking about how to finish the install of the steering column. Well duh. I didn't want to pull that column out again.

This time I made sure that I put it on first before the column went in.

I made the plate out of the same material as the dash that I made.

Earl

Nice work.
Seems like a lot of holes to drill.

Hey Kim. Yes it is but I don't mind the extra work it takes to get me to where I want to go. Its all good in the end. Thanks Kim. I see more hole drilling in my future.

Re: Just another old truck.

I broke out in laughter with the holes being drilled. I recently had a guy trying to install a radio that required opeing the dash hole a little bigger.

He didn't have a good way to cut it open.

I introduced him to the 1/8" drill bit and drill. He asked how many holes is it gonna take? I told him it didn't matter, as long as the job gets done.

Later on he got the job done and said he was gonna remember the whole hole idea for the next project.

Looking good Clarance J.

Hey Jim. You can bet that the next time he needs a odd shaped hole in something which tool he will reach for. It works for me. You made another convert. Thanks Jim.

Re: Just another old truck.

Today I just wanted to show you some then and now pictures. There is a 41 year difference between the two. Same truck, same door handles, different door. Two totally different styles that reflect the then and now. What was I thinking back then?

Cleaner look now and Clarence J was right in style in 1975. It is cool you've had the truck for so long.

Re: Just another old truck.

Well I've.been working on the front end a bunch setting up the front clip latches and making the gaps better. Been making progess but I wanted to see something done and painted. Still aways to go on the front and so the one thing nearest to being done was the tailgate. So it got painted today and is drying as I post this very short update. Also the windshield dash trim got in the way of the spray gun.

Re: Just another old truck.

Kim57 and RockinKees, Thank you.

Just as a side note I'm going to have to do a re-spray on my tailgate. I had one of those learning curve moments on the tailgate. I'm just guessing here but I think it might have been too hot to spray. Temps that day were around 80-90*. There were some dry looking spots in the paint. Also even though I let the tailgate hang for 5 hours and it felt dry to the touch when I took it down and layed it on a towel on my bench to tape off the letters the towel stuck to the back in a couple of places.
By now the respray window has passed so what I'm going to do is use 600 wet/dry sandpaper to scuff and level the surface and respray in the morning when its cooler. Spraying in the morning means I can let the gate hang longer to dry. At least that is the plan. We will see. Other wise it turned out good.

Re: Just another old truck.

Well here it is 11:30 Saturday night. Just finished taping the letters on the back of the tailgate. Hopefully I can finish the taping in the morning and spray the light aqua color. On the outside of the gate I'm painting around the letters in the center leaving them yellow and on the inside the letters will be the aqua color.

Re: Just another old truck.

I have about 5 hours in the masking of the letters. So it did take awhile. At the time I was really hoping that everthing would turn out ok. I was using two different kinds of paint. The yellow is a single stage paint from Summit Racing and the light aqua is a 2 stage paint---bc/cc from the local paint store. Another learning curve. So now its ready to mix and spray. Yahoo.

Re: Just another old truck.

Well I must say that all things considered the final results were not that bad. I sprayed the light aqua on both sides and then the clear coat. Waited about 20 minutes and then started pulling tape. There were a few spots that wanted to pull up with the tape so I used my exacto knife to make a clean cut. With all the tape off I sprayed another coat of clear over the whole gate. We'll see later how it turned out when its dry. Right now I'm happy with it.

Re: Just another old truck.

Well heck. I was just checking my post pictures and what is the first thing I see.

I missed pulling the tape out of the center of the "O" on the inside of the gate.

Back to the drawing board. Its a good thing I can't fire myself.
