darn you prolly need to grind a corner of the support and you offcourse allready painted the chassis
how mush do you need to take off? maibe you can grind on the steeringbox instead without breaking through

Update on the 6.0/4L80E

Ordered xmember from POL. Nice looking part....
However, the ends would not fit between frame rails. Real tight and I wasn't about to force anything. Soooooo, cut off top section to do fit up.

Next raised trans up to correct 2 degree angle and.............

Yes, 4L80E hits the cab floor (with short hump). This sucka is big...

So after some cursing decision made to next cut out/raise section of floor. Yes, I had that annoyed look going again. Also, need to fabricate another X member. Although the POL xmember is nice it will need about a 1" spacer and that's simply too much.

Custom x member will likely start with 3" tube.....

Oh well......

We've been planning to upgrade to PS for some time. I traded some sheetmetal parts for a used PS box, but had no idea about the ratio or condition of it. I planned anyway to have it rebuilt.

Here it is:

As you can see the frame is not "dimpled", being a '67, but it does have raised bosses. More on that later.
In August I spent a week in SoCal on vacation. Just had to work in a truck project related stop. So I brought the PS box and the PS pump from the LQ9 with me to take to Lee Manufacturing in Sun Valley. I had talked with Tom Lee at length beforehand. In case you have not heard of Tom he is an absolute steering genius. Been written up in all the car mags, builds boxes special for NASCAR. A great guy to boot. Well, he recommended a 13:16 variable ratio box for the truck. Firm on the highway when going straight and easy to turn in tight parking places at low speed. Tom even tailored the amount of force required to turn the wheel according to my input, to about 25 lbs. I left the parts with him for a few days and he did one hellava job, rebuilt everything and tested it. Added nice touch, he put adapters in the box for the metric fittings on the LQ PS hoses, shaved some metal off the housing and welded some spacers on it. Awesome service.

So here is the same box, newly rebuilt with the LQ9 PS pump, looking sharp Tom actually builds things to closer/tighter specs than original!

Well, unfortunately with the raised bosses the spacers we a bit too large, they made the box stick out too far, so out came the grinder. We need that box just as tight as possible against the frame so the pitman arm is lined up properly. Justin did most of the grinding and fitting, grinding and fitting. Damn near ground off the spacers completely. It was just a misunderstanding, not Tom's fault, I should have made it clear about the bosses.

We are very close now, need to check it with the pitman arm on and fine tune it in the coming days. I'm stoked!!!

Here's an update.....
Been slowly buying some parts/supplies to keep this project moving toward completion someday. To address the issue of the 4L80E hitting the cab floor we're going with the ECE mounts. Luckily, found some used (thanks HartRob!) but will have to trim the top of the powdercoated frame. At first I was mortified with the thought of doing this but over time I've accepted it. It will be fine. Next, bought an original truck tilt column (thanks Teeitup!) and steering shaft. It will all be torn down and rebuilt. Lastly, we've decided we want a smooth firewall. So I purchased the nice filler pieces (thanks Nate at Porterbuilt) to make the job easier. Oh, and we still need to cut the floor to use the large hump in the cab. So having said all that the next few weeks of this summer will be dedicated to cutting, grinding and/or welding. Here are pics as we start this phase.....

Strip the firewall paint. Note: Bill Hirsch chassis black paint is tough!

Grinding original paint. Stripper barely touched this!!!!

Lots of grinding, good thing Harbor Freight opened new store 2 miles from us

Finished for now with that part....

Justin took a break to give his firebird semiannual bath, surface felt rough from tree sap....

Cleaned up and finished for the moment, still need to weld on the last piece to make this end symetrical with the opposite side, now time to check into that misfire on the vette.....

Thanks Jim for the compliment. We are having fun with it. Looking around this forum there are plenty of guys doing real cool work, which serves to inpire and motivate us. We are proud to be building this C20, its all around a more beefy frame and suspension, which will make people stop to take a second look. Upon closer inspection they will eventually find that LQ9/4L80E combo. Jaws should drop....at least we hope.

Tell you what, just drive your C20 out to Cali for some customization. Make it an extended road trip.....

We're in Northern California, near San Jose, about 3.5 hr drive N of San Luis Obispo. There are plenty of great shops down in SoCal though closer to those locations. A car guys heaven. If you do make the trip be sure to try to go to the Pomona swap meet, you'll be blown away, guarenteed!

OK, it has been real been hot around here so work has slowed down a bit. Last weekend I just wanted to get something done. Decided to strip the firewall paint to get ready for more welding. Cranked up the wall AC unit and cooled it down to a very confortable 72. Then slowly stripped the firewall of that black paint. It was slow and not much fun but had to get done....

Update: Took a deep breath, fired up cut-off wheel and took it to the nice powdercoated frame to make the ECE mounts fit this 3/4 ton 67 frame.
Then moved to cut the small hump cab to make room for the trans and large hump cover. Justin came over today to help stab the LQ9/4L80E in place. Went in like butta.....

We slapped the front wheels back on, fired up the air ride system and cycled her up and down a few times. Stood back and admired our work. All in all some good progress...finally....

Been busy lately with other family things (all good) but we are preparing for the next phase of this project. To make the job easier of removing the cab and bed we ordered the plans from Kevin.

Here's the picture of the finished cab/bed lift.

Next, I designed a body/bed dolly. It's built for dual purposes.

To support any car or truck frame of a project under construction. It's completely adjustable and can be moved around the garage.

OR

Using the uprights (which bolt in and are adjustable) to support the bed and cab of our C20. While we work on the fuel, brake lines, driveline, exhaust, etc.......Yes, this was more work than I intended to do. But I'm really happy with how they came out. Can't wait to try them. I'm even thinking of renting these tools out in the future to truck forum people in the SF bay area...
