Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Fixed something that has been bugging me since I first got my truck. The PO had put a cheap set of gauges below the dash, and the stock oil pressure gauge in the dash works as well. The gauge below the dash would show, on a hot day, about 35lbs max and about 10lbs at idle. Since it is a 100lb gauge, 10lbs is way down at the bottom near "0". A little disconcerting to say the least! I had always wondered about the air in the line affecting the reading, so yesterday I disconnected the line and started the engine and cleared the air out. Hooked the gauge back up and same/same, no difference at all. So I guess oil pressure and air pressure are the same to the gauge. Then I installed a new oil pressure gauge I had in the garage for quite some time, thinking it might read different. Bingo! idles at 20lbs and runs at 45 when hot. Also corresponds to the stock gauge in the dash, which does not have numbers, just three dots, I'm assuming it is a 60lb gauge.... Just a mental deal, I guess, but seeing that needle down near the bottom when stopped at a light is not fun. All is well now!

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Ok, so today we finished up the e-brake. The last step before getting the state inspection. I ran it down and it passed with no problem so I got to drive it for the first time since we started the resto 14 months ago. Here are pics of the finished truck!

lol. no, you are looking at someone else's post. Mine was done using traditional HVLP methods. I think you are looking at 57chevyman's truck...he's an ace with the rattle can...can hardly tell any difference at all.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

After going to the Brothers truck show this am, got all fired up to do something to my '55. I had bought two stock steering wheels a couple years ago and fixed the cracks with epoxy putty and painted them. The one on my truck was OK, but the ones I fixed were real nice. So I decided fit one of them on. Also added a new black wrap to it.

Darn you have me second guessing my color choice, my truck was originally the same as yours and my interior would match. Up to now I have been leaning on darker blue green stock color.

Decided to take out the rusty old exhaust and replace with 2.5" stainless steel. I already had 23" cherry bombs on there and liked the sound, so I ordered a nice new set from jegs. Can't beat $28 each with free shipping

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Started replacing rusted out parts of the cab. We made a new floor piece to start. Next thing we are going to do is work on the lower door post and inner step. Lots of sitting, staring, thinking, re-thinking... Hopefully the pace picks up a bit more now.

Also, my brother was over today working on his Model A truck cab. He decided a while back that he was going to stretch the doors (and ultimately the cab) by 4 inches. So far it's turning out really cool, but he has a ways to go yet.

Compressor #2 installed, one fitting to finish. Will be here later in the week, then can do a vacuum check.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

After about a years wait, I finally started to strip my 47 down. Got the bed off and the running boards off relatively easy. The bolts were so rusted I didn't waste my time trying to break them loose. A combination of angle grinder and small air hammer did the trick. Now on to the front end tear down.

afetr having two generators and a voltage regulator go bad I finally broke down and installed a Powermaster alternator in my Suburban. "Borrowed" the alternator and bracket from my 53 convertible. Had to modify the GMC motor mount a bit, but it worked out perfect..

Re: What did you do with your truck today, take 2

Mine hasn't run in six months. A little bit of blame goes to two new granddaughters born three weeks aprt at the end of the summer. One local, one about 150 miles away. Frequents visitng trips, work and of course the holidays. But they're all excuses. I should have had it up and running again quickly.

I pulled the carb off, gave it to my retired my brother-in-law to rebuild it and never reinstalled since I think October(!) til today.

It fired right up but doesn't want to idle. Took her out and washed her, touched up some minor scratches in the rattle can paint job.

Tonight I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy a knock off Lokar gas pedal & linkage from ebay. I've been meaning to do this since I took the factory mechanism off, cleaned it, lubed it and it still didn't work right. Anyone's suggestions on accelerator pedals is appreciated.
