So we went up north saturday, I got my work done, then early sunday we went to the drag races. I picked up a new camera and was testing all the new features and I think I got a few good shots and a couple good video clips. You can check it out here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...37#post4141337 So no work done on the projects, but we had a hell of a good time.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I'm fairly new to this site and just found your build. I have to tell you it is very inspirational to look from where you started to where you are now in terms of not only your truck but your skills and confidence. I read from page one all the way till yesterdays post in one sitting, you're doing an awesome job and can't wait to see more.
As a side note where are you in MN? I rode a bicycle across your state last year, and just curious if I was near you at some point. Thought it would be cool to put a place I rode through with you and your truck.-Jamie |

I'm in southern MN in Sleepy Eye. It's on US Hwy 14 which goes east to west all the way across the state about 50 miles north of I-90. There are bicyclists all summer coming through here.

hgs_notes, it looks like I got really close to you on one day we went from Redwood Falls to St. Peter (pretty easy day only about 70 miles and fairly flat). We basically followed the Minnesota River till about New Ulm, so it looks like maybe ten miles north of you.

Took a day off today to finish up the driver side. The biggest problem I've been having is that the filler is hardening way too fast in this heat. I tried cutting back on the amount of hardener, which helped. Very frustrating mixing it up and only having time to lay it on a couple spots and then toss the leftovers. Anyway, that part is done. And I sprayed the bottom side of the radiator support. I have to sand my hood and spray some epoxy on it, and finish the tailgate. Then pull the engine and old radiator support so I can get to the firewall better. Baby steps my friends.

Got most of the old rattle can primer off the hood. Only two small dings on the front of the hood, easy fix. Might get it primered sunday.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Got some replacement rear well tubs the other day from t korinek. Got them sandblasted today and they were in great shape. Couple little dings, thats it. If I get time this weekend I should be able to get just about everything in epoxy primer. We'll see.
I'm going to need some guidance coming up soon though. My next step will be to spray it with a polyester high build primer and block it out. I plan on using 320 grit. I'm not sure what to do after that. I've seen where some shops then spray a sealer over all of it, then another coat of primer, then sand with 500 grit or more, then they paint. That seems like too much. How many different kinds of primer do I need? One shop says I can just sand the epoxy, but it sands like crap. And I think some flaws are going to come out from the block sanding with my body work. Do I really need to use a sealer? Do I need to sand to a 500 grit or higher before paint? What would be the last type of primer to use before the paint? And you may ask yourself How do I work this? And you may ask yourself Where is that large automobile? And you may ask yourself What is that beautiful house? And you may ask yourself Where does that highway go? And you may ask yourself Am I right?...Am I wrong? And you may tell yourself MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
When I have body work areas, I spray with 3 medium wet coats of primer. Then guide coat (lightly mist with rattle can) with a dark color, then block with 150. If there are any problems you will see it while you are blocking the guide coat. After your issues are fixed, or if it blocks out OK, then recoat with 2 more coats of Primer. Guide coat it, Then block with 320. You should be ready for Paint. So now you will apply 2 coats of sealer, then your paint. Bare metal parts should be epoxy primed before you prime or do body work. Usually after they are sandblasted, then epoxy prime them. Epoxy primer is a good corrosion/adhesion promoter, but a very bad filler. If you have to sand Epoxy Primer use some wax and grease remover and wet sand it with 400 and it will not gum up the sand paper. Your build looks great. Good luck Scott

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Thanks Scott. I guess the only thing I've done different is I've been doing the filler work on bare metal then spraying the epoxy over the panel. Someone told me to do it that way, don't remember who now.
I've come so far, yet there is still so much to do.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Didn't do much today. Just didn't feel like sanding some more. I had the new wheel tubs sand blasted the other day. I went over them with a hammer to bang the dings back out. They should look pretty good. I hope to spray the hood and wheel tubs in the next day or 2.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I got back to work on this project. I couldn't keep putting off the sanding. I got the tailgate stripped yesterday, and filled the dings in it today. Then got the new bed wheel wells cleaned up. Then sprayed some more epoxy primer.
I also got the two dings on the front of the hood filled and that area primed (no pic). I still need to do a lot of sanding on the hood before I can spray it. Hopefully I'll get some time this week to finish that up. All thats left for body work is the hood, some touch up on the cowl cover, and a ding on one of the fenders where a ladder fell on it in the garage. Should blocking it it soon fellas.

You are making this look way to easy! I hope my body work turns out half as nice as yours has. I see you live in Sleepy Eye, I lived there for about 3 years, now I am just south of Mankato. Cool to know that there is another board member close by! Give me a shout if I can lend a hand with anything.

There is another member on here from Mankato. His build has kind of stalled but he had a nice dropped stepside he was working on. If you know anything about body work and want to help block this out, be my guest. If you're ever around town, let me know.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Yeah, hard to believe that was the original MN part for my truck. We used to haul wood and trash in this thing for many years. Just had a few dings on the top edge and some rust along the bottom edge. The only original body parts on this are the doors, hood and tailgate.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
While out working today I was at a body shop, and in the lot was a truck there for some work. It just happened to be painted the color I intend to paint this. At least as close as I think it is without having the color chip right there. This truck was originally ochre and white, then painted turquoise, and I guess will get repainted to a maroon color. The cell phone pics turned out ok, might look slightly greener then reality...

Looking good, I hear ya on the sanding gets old and humid weather!! People on this board help each other stay motivated, its hard sometimes. But I read all the build pages and it helps keep me motivated. As long as you keep at it, and enjoy doing it, that s all that matters. Keep us updated!
