Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Are you planning on putting the motor in the stock truck tranny location? It looks pretty large. Would be cool to switch the truck to IRS and put the motor right in front of the rear end.

This is the coolest thread....
But for the Engine Bay, no to the Frunk or an inert SBC - you need one of these in the middle that lights up / works.

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Man, props to you for puttin' out all the info. I wound up reading both threads. This is fascinating. Not fascinating enough for me to leave the LS world, but really neat all the same. I will be watching closely! I don't hate the electrics, but If I can't jump in, gas up at the QT, and run 85-90 all the way to Dallas ripping burnouts at every intersection, I can't cosign on that deal. Please, though, continue, I gotta see this!

One thing I want to address is something that you said, because this is a standard anti electric car argument: long distance trips I assume you live in Independence Missouri (correct me if I'm wrong) and you are talking about the 8 1/2 hour drive to Dallas, Texas (again I am guessing I had to Google Map it, ha ha) so I gotta ask how often do you do that drive? not being rude, I just speak from experience, it's exactly like my drive from Sacramento, California to Los Angeles and folks assume that when you go electric you just automatically sell all your other vehicles (or THEY [Men in Black] come and take them all away, ha ha) or you must do everything in your electric car, I don't know why that is hence this rant I know when we had our '97 Tahoe a perfectly good SUV in working order, any time I ran to LA I would borrow my moms Honda Civic, sometimes cause I knew it got better gas mileage, other times cause she was retired and never drove it, so she begged me to stretch it's legs a little bit from time to time the point is, you can have other cars and use them accordingly, you wouldn't take a Miata to go get dirt, rocks, or bark for your landscaping and how often do you go to Dallas, be honest, you don't have to post it here I am just sayin' cause we went down to LA like once every 3 years, we could have flown there, we could have used a rental car, etc and the other point is that it used to be that most "Americans" only drove 40 miles a day, now it's down to only 25 miles per day, so there's that anyway not trying to argue I am just making an effort to share what I have observed over the last decade or so, people's behaviors views of electric vehicles are changing but it will take time |

If we're talking standard cars, sure, I just bought a Kia Soul to buzz around in. Love it. But it ain't my 87 SWB, or the 67 SWB, or the 04 Duramax CC SWB that I just got all the parts to drop and hotrod. I very seriously considered a Leaf to lease (now that they don't look like a 5-year old lost a coloring contest to design one), but I drive 60+ miles a day (putting me over), and didn't want a $450+ car payment. My other pain point is that everyone that argues for these cars acts like it's the most natural thing in the world to go 100-150 miles and plug in (if you can) and fart around for 25-45 minutes. These people have not rolled with me. I've been known to roll in, gas the bike, grab a Gatorade out of the cooler, chug it while peeing, pay, and gone. I'm an hourly worker. If I'm taking off, I got places to be, and s#it to do. Standing around waiting for my EV to charge ain't one of them. Again, I harbor no ill will toward the technology at all, other than when it's crammed down my throat. I'm fascinated with your project, wish you every success, and eagerly await your next well-described missive. Yours in Chip

I like your rebuttal until you referred to useing or other cars. Your government want to out law gas engines in car by 2035.

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
that and our switch to metric .... you'll see we are still using MPH signs, get our gas by the gallons and track our distance by miles! Old stuff has a habit of not dying in the USA!
Don't even get me started on broadcast timecode for NTSC Drop Frame, that was done to keep Black & White TVs operational as Color was coming in - then NTSC Drop Frame timecode was kept for HD content. My God, we can't just move on with anything LOL

Keeping in mind that 2003 date that you mentioned, When was the last time our Government purchased an electric car or truck? I can't think of it ever happening.

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Im 100% in support of going electric even with the low range. Its a cool fun project and you have other vehicles to drive. My COE is a burden to drive on the freeway but I LOVE driving it around town. Id rather smile every day for 20 minutes than once a year for 4hours.

Roosevelt Rides in an Electric Car – Today in History: August 22 not sure they bought it for him but you get the idea, howerver William Taft (president from 1909-1913) was the first president to own and drive cars during his presidency. One of the most interesting cars he owned was, ironically enough, “green” — a Baker Electric. Last edited by Gregski; 12-02-2021 at 02:51 PM. |

The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) is a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the American Apollo program (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972. It could carry a maximum payload of 1,080 pounds (490 kg), including two astronauts, equipment, and lunar samples, and was designed for a top speed of 8 miles per hour (13 km/h), although it achieved a top speed of 11.2 miles per hour (18.0 km/h) on its last mission, Apollo 17. |

although the latter part of this video gets rather specific on how to configure an open source electric vehicle controller aka it's aftermarket brain if you will, I think some of you may find the first 75% of the video interesting in terms of the technology used to achieve it

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
well I couldn't sleep so I punched some numbers into the good ol' Lotus 1-2-3 (pronounced: Excel) ha ha to correlate RPMs to Miles Per Hour based on my 3.73 rear end and 215/65R-17 wheels
I relied on the good ol' folks at x-engineer.org to provide the complicated formulas, (and our daughter to recite pi to the 57th digit): I'm gonna post some random pics from their site to intimidate you and make myself look smart, ha ha and yes these motors can spin above 10,000 RPMs easy Last edited by Gregski; 12-08-2021 at 03:10 PM. |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Question: If the motor is built into a transmission, does the trans work? Or is the locking out I'm seeing lock the trans into the 1:1 gear? In other news, check out the autotopia LA channel. Someone put half a P10 into a very nice Cobra., and holy crap, does that thing run! 90-100 mile range, but that'd be enough for weekend ripping around.

There are two electric motors inside this Lexus GS450h transmission relying on a power split device. Each one has it's own set of Planetary Gears. The car uses a two-stage motor speed reduction device. We lock the input shaft which is only connected to the first motor what they call a Generator in the first diagram below and refer to it as MG1 (yellow wheel) in the second diagram. The hybrid system in the GS 450h supports both high output and high vehicle speed. To engage the low gear range, Toyota opens the conventional planetary gearset’s brake 1 and locks brake 2, resulting in a reduction gear ratio of 3.900. For high gear, brake 1 is locked and brake two is open, with a reduction gear ratio of 1.900. FYI: Most guys like me who do the EV Conversion using this transmission always leave it in High gear. sorry wordy, but I hope that explains how it works and answered your question Last edited by Gregski; 12-10-2021 at 11:53 AM. |
