Thanks. OK, it looks like engine and transmission rebuilding time is here!

After MUCH debate, I decided to go see if George's engine can be fired. He has a very nicely rebuilt 350 that should scream... but time will tell. I posted pics of it earlier in this thread. If we cannot get his to fire, I am going to rebuild my 305.

The transmission is going to B&K transmissions soon. They are going to put in a stage 2 shift kit, so that should help beef up the shift points.

I'll keep you posted.

Sorry for the delay in updating my thread. The engine is rebuilt and I have a new tranny. I am editing photos tonight so I will post those soon.

Until then, a quick sum-up; my 700r4 was trash and I ended up completely rebuilding my 305... don't ask, I will explain what happened asap.

For what it's worth, she is running fantastic and was well worth the time and $$$ invested.

The plan was this. I really wanted a 350 but could only afford a new transmission OR a new motor, but I needed both. I had to settle with rebuilding my 700R4 and putting new gaskets in my 305 hoping it would hold until I saved up enough for a nice 350.

Took the motor and transmission out and couldn't believe the amount of oil my motor had been puking over the past few months. YUCK! I hate grease, I can't imagane why anyone would want to me a mechanic for a living. I only do it because I can't afford to have someone else do my work...

I got a lead on a lightly used Goodwrench rebuilt 1990 4L60 transmission for 300 bucks. I bought it and took it over to the tranny shop for a reseal and to change it from the electronic speed-o to a manual one. (200 bucks) I found out something interesting about my old transmission. I couldn't have rebuilt it if I had wanted too. Several gears were chewed up and tons of score marks in the casing. Good thing I got the lead on the "new" one.

But back to the motor. I started tearing it down to discover that the cylinder walls were in pretty good shape. I already had the gasket kit (90 bucks) so I figured why not hone the walls and put new bearings (60 bucks for rod and main bearings) and rings (60 bucks) in... sounds good right?

Took the caps off and discovered that the bearings were trashed. Figured I was that far and had the crank machined 10 over (75 bucks) and had a friend come over to help with honing the block. I also discovered that my timing chain was in bad shape so I got a new one of those... (25 bucks...are you getting the idea???)

At this point I bought a new oil pump (30 bucks) so at least the bottom end would be complete. And what of the heads? I took them over to a mechanic friend to have new seals pressed in. No such luck... the guides were shot. I remembered an employee at Checker Auto Parts had a set of rebuilt heads for a 305 and only wanted 100 bucks for them so I grabbed 'em.

After I got the heads I realized that in the end I will end up with a rebuilt 305, so I went ahead and got a mild RV cam (95 bucks) and installed it. I finished off with a new edlebrock intake (140 bucks) and water pump (25 bucks)... Total cost? About 1500 for the motor and transmission rebuild with all the trimmings, I.E. new spark plug wires, spark plugs, oil... transmission fluid.... etc. I guess that's not so bad, but unfortunately It's still a 305. I tell people now that I have a 350 with dyslexia or I have a weight-watchers edition 350.

What a mess. Total time? 3 weeks including waiting on the machine shop.

Day arived for the start up. Fired it up and James came over to help. We throttled it for a bit for the cam break in and about 10 minutes into the process, BAM! tack, tack, tack, tack, tack... He still feels really bad about that because he was the one at the throttle at the time... Not anyone's fault, but do you think I'm going to let him off the hook easy or anytime soon? Naaaaaahhhhhhh....

ARRRUUGGGHHHH! LOL One of the rockers wasn't bolted down tight enough and it caught on the stud. It took a chunk out of the stud and bent the rod. Needless to say I had to extract a stud out of my old set of heads and install it on the new set. That was not fun and I'll save it for another story.

Outside of thinking my engine was overheating at first, (but come to find out it was the temp guage that was bad), she runs fantastic. Plenty of power and seems to get better mileage than before.

Oh and my radiator took a crap during the break in so I had to replace that as well... Took the 2 core one out and replaced it with a V8 4 core. Helps to keep the temps down and I got my oil pressure guage working. Nice to know I actually can keep an eye on my oil pressure now.

Thanks Rick, I sure hope so. I would have rather spent the $$$ on that '67 283 I had. Too bad I couldn't move it from Oregon to here. How are things with your stepper?

Got my new temp gauge today from Desert Muscle cars. Cost me 40 bucks and installed it. That was the problem, my truck reads accurate temps now.

Phew... I'm not overheating like I thought I have been. Down side is, with the new gauge installed, it makes the rest of the custer look crappy. Looks like I will be buying new gauges for the rest of the cluster! Darn...

nice, got to hate it wwhen you want to do one thing and then you just get that bug and do the rest, but glad to hear that it is coming along nicely. and 305's can be a good engine.

This little 305 is a great engine. Now granted I'm sure a 350 would have had more HP, but I am not disappointed, not in the least!

She has plenty of power for street driving. Most of the power is lost in the transmission. I want to get a stage 2 shift kit installed. I wanted to when I put the transmission in, but I just ran out of money. I am sure once the shift kit is installed, the power will get transfered to the rear wheels more effectively.

I seem to be getting around 13-15 MPG and for that I cannot complain. She is doing much better on gas than before.

OK. A new dawn has approached with my truck. I have decided that I like my truck enough that IF I can find a nice, rust-free AZ '67 cab, I will redo the truck.

Here is the plan.

After I aquire a "new" cab, strip her down and have the top chopped a couple or so inches (3"-4"???). I love the way chopped '67's look with the step-sides and I have a good friend of mine who chops tops for a living and who is also VERY good at doing so. He can also cut the glass so I don't have to find someone else who can do that!

As I am working on the cab I will get all new sheet-metal for the rest of the truck, IE, fenders, doors, hood... I need to get rid of all the rusted, bent-up pieces from Oregon. I will get the pieces one at a time and when I have all the pieces I need, jamb everything in and then assemble the truck and paint all at once. I am sure it will take some time to get the other pieces, but at least a piece at a time will be more affordable. I have also decided that I will weld the tailgate into the bed. My gate now is bolted closed and I have never needed to lower the tailgate. I figure it will look cleaner that way.

I am looking for a cab now and I am sure with all of the '67's here in Tucson I can find a good cab. I am in no big hurry, so I won't just jump on a POS cab just to get one. I have one of those already!

Also, no way in heck I am changing the color. It will stay pearl orange. It's kinda become my calling card.

I'm confused Don. Are you talking about building a second truck... or redoing the one you have now...??? Where is this rusted, dented sheet metal?

Do you have an early 4L60 that's not computer controlled?

Hey Jessie. I am talking about rebuilding the one I have now. All the areas on my truck that you see that are orange, they are the rusted and dented parts. There is WAY too much filler in my truck for my liking and rust is already creeping back through. The bottom of the doors and the front part of the hood and already bubbling with rust. Not to mention the inside door and cab jambs. It's getting pretty bad. It's hard to explain in pictures of just how rusted out this thing was when I got it. A quick look back at the build pics will show some of the rust issues and amount of filler I went through.

And yes I found an early 4L60 that is not computer controlled. I believe it came out of a 1990 GMC van. The only thing I had to do was get the tail-shaft swapped with one that has a manual gear for my speedo. The 4L60 had an eletronic one.

I figured that I should do something new to my truck so I can post it and keep it on the front page of the build section.

I remade my kick panels and got my door speakers installed. I also got "Tangerine Dream" installed on the glove box door. A friend of mine said it needed something so that's what I did. I think they both turned out cool.

Just got caught up on this . Glad it all worked out and i had a planetary gear fail on a Z71 i had . Must be common .

I'm really sorry to hear that! You did such a great job putting it all together. It's a shame! At least you can work on all of the parts and get them ready to go "back on the truck" before you ever touch the actual truck so you can enjoy it a lot longer. That's what I'm going to be doing to mine with all the parts I have stored up. My truck also is need of new inner and outer rockers, and maybe even a section of the cab supports in a couple areas.

That's the idea. I figure if I buy new sheetmetal, the reduced time needed to get them ready for paint will far outweigh the money saved by getting parts that need work. I'm in no big hurry, I want to enjoy my truck as much as possible before I tear into it again.
