Re: New project
Thanks for the tips . I run a hydraulic roller . well I got the head gaskets replaced and everything is back together . Changed the factory dash , as all it did was temp gauge , oil light and alt light anyway . set it up where the back light for the volt gauge excites the alt . This means when I turn on the key the volt gauge lights up til the truck fires . then the back light goes out . I will know I have a charging issue it the volt gauge is lite after the motor fires . I added a A/F meter in Lambda scale . Mechanical temp gauge vs the factory unmarked gauge . Oil pressure gauge vs light I had before ( never paid attention anyway) . The speedo doesn't have a cable , but this dash has a lot more info .
Added a carb pan and sealed it to the cowl hood . Lot of off season work .

Re: New project
Had a good test session last night it was within .03 for 3 passes and still a touch lean at WOT , which may have been the air .

Re: New project
First test session I was a bit lean at wot . Added 4 jets sizes to it . Had full intentions to test tonight and run 7.0 tomorrow . The Ford decided to kill a battery ( actually both ) by the time I got battaries it was to late to test . Im just going to test in time trials tomorrow . We will see .

Re: New project
http://evadaleraceway.com/content/?a...nstance_id=755
Got this coming up this weekend . My engine builder is coming out with his brother in law to watch . He has a super gas Vega . They are talking about letting me drive the Vega second half of the season and shaking it down for 2016 and running some divisional stuff . We will see . Truck is actually running good . I pulled the rear axle apart and changed the rear bearing o rings . cleaned up the rear brakes , Changed the valve covers and fixed the leaks and pulled the stand alone fuel cell and nitrous to spray on my current fuel choice . As I posted earlier I swapped the 3" SUV flowmasters for Borla XR1's . Between that and the fuel system I lost 100# 70 or so out of the middle and 25 or so off the front . Thinking about swapping the hood as it has to be 30# . 25 more off the front would help a lot . The motor I broke last March @ Sealy running IHRA is going back together . The heads are rebuilt and you cant tell which head had the damage . I have all the parts and found a nice 4 bolt block . I figured all the parts would build a nice 396 and just buy a shortblock later over 400". I had all the parts in a pile so why not . I was looking at the new Racetech pistons . I really don't have preference what name is on the piston as long as it clearences and is the correct material . Think we settled on JE gas ported with a low tension ring set . Total seal top and a Nathier ( spelling ) second with 12-14 # oil . This will be a full skirted piston for stability . We are within 8 grams weight wise . These will be flat top and 11.8 to 1 . should balance out nice for reasonable cash . Maybe weld a keyway here or their . Dropping the fogger down to 175ish . Ready for the new motor , but my junk stuff is at 6.80's now thinking 6.50's , which will take me out of the index racing unless they change the classes . We will see . Looked over the weekend points NHRA and was double checking . I am listed as 7th . Points are wrong . I am tied for 5th . Working towards a track championship and a Ironman this year .

Re: New project
Well I sucked this weekend and bad . I don't have excuses , but I got a story so here goes.
I am running IHRA sss at a new track to the east of me at a track called Ben Bruce memorial airpark in Evadale , Texas . Last year I ran IHRA at Lonestar motorsports park in sealy which was west toward San Antonio . So im headed east in my Old Ford (7.3 powerstroke) and about 45 minutes in we are dead stop on I-10 . I-10 is the main road from California to Florida in the south . 30 minutes of idling and the old Ford (186,000 ) starts dropping cylinders . I floor it in neutral andf get it clean enough to run on 7 .1.5 hours dead stop I finally get to the turn off . My Machinist had shown up and wanted to ride with me . we both had to pee. Mind you First round of qualifying was 4:00 pm its 4:30 . I pull into a Dairy queen in town and I have a cut trailer tire . Driver side front . It is cut bad . I pull out the small gen and air compressor and it aint happening . Guessing it was prom night cause there was a limo in the parkinglot . I ask " Are you from around here " ? he say "yep" ......"Me " I need a tire shop ASAP . He says go left here ,left their , right here and maybe their open . Ok , thanks ....Im about to leave and this guy says "hey , Your best bet is Walmart " Im heading North and forget to drop the num ber in the trailer brakes and burn a flat spot in the now flat tire . I get to the auto shop (Walmart) ..... Policy says they cant work on trailers ! I blocking all the stalls . I drive the trailer up on a 4x4 block of wood and pull the bad tire with a 4 way which I bent. I roll the tire from my "78 C-20 3/4 ton" in as a carry in flat repair . It is cut wide open and now has a flat spot cause Im a dumbass . While they are playing games about tires . I put on the spare . $153 later I got a new tire for my 78" 3/4 ton and im on my way again . I have already missed first time trial . I pull in and try to buy 7.0 index and no box tech cards . Nope either or . one or the other . 1 time trial right lane .105 red . WTF . Throw the kitchen sink at it to be green 1st round . 10 psi out of the fronts , 700 out of 2 step . 1/2 # out of rears and .020 into the long throw . drew the left lane .021 red ........WOW ...... Take another 5 psi out of the front and bought back in . Got the left lane and adjusted accordingly . Im holding.03 just cause . I leave im .049 and the shift box wasn't on . I shove it in second and start to spray . 7.05 on a 6.93 dial . Opponent .001 and backed into me like a pro . > I go to lift and the motor is still revved . I block the block valve and it calms down . Nitrous solenoid diagram is bad . . I forgot about the fuel regulator I had to put a diaphragm into due to a lean condition . I'll do a leak down , but I am offially on my longest losing streak ever . I just cant win for loosing .

Re: New project
Thanks , I know a lot of you guys are snowed in or have bad weather . My original intention was to head to Temple . Texas to a small place called Little river raceway . It is kind of in between Austin and San Antonio , sort of northwest of college station . They "rained" that event out due to the forcast . We have had rain a lot this week and Sunday it is slated to rain again . Maybe we can get this 275 event in . Track will be cold for sure .

Re: New project
Opening weekend . Took it out Friday and it was still lean . Added 4 jet sizes and got it a lot closer . . Had a Divisional tech guy their to tech Saturday. He spent 20 minutes on my truck and confiscated my jacket due to a small pin hole in it . I need a battery box even though its in the bed and my roll over vent on the nitrous fuel cell "wasn't sufficient" . I will be removing that cell and pulling fuel off the new aeromotive anyway . 125-130 cars their Saturday ,I went 5 rounds and lost in a good race . We were .004 apart on reaction time and the truck slowed down .015 Mov was .013 . Sunday 80 or so cars and I lost 4th round in another tough race . My better reaction time by .002 he was dead on 6.420 . I had .002 to fit in and broke out by .006 with a 6.804 on a 6.81 . Really close racing .

Re: New project
Well , was just looking things over today and found out why it broke out . All my fault . After the last round i won , the A/F ratio was showing lean and i added fuel to the idle curcuit to correct what i thought was a lean condition at idle . Turns out the collector nuts had fallen off the driveside collector and the last one was loose . This is the side the O2 sensor is in . I tightend tis up and was way rich at idle . Last week i had those big 80 series SUV Flowmasters pulled off and a set of Borla XR-1 s installed this saved me about 60 pounds and it sounds great . Guess i learn everyday . I also drained the tank and wiped out the bottom . Also disassembled the strainer and cleaned it / checked it for material due to the new hoses .
Heading to Evadale Saturday for IHRA if it doesnt rain .

Re: New project
Less than stellar outing . Last divisional race I had a flat in the rear . I took the slick to the tire shop and they wouldn't patch the tube . Said it was a Liability . I gave them a new tube to install . Second time trial and it is going flat again . I threw 1 spare rim in just in case . Won first round , but coming back and the lights are dim . Battery failed . % years old , guess it was due . Pulled one out of the ford . Tree'd the guy 2nd round and the truck didn't run the number . It ran a 6.93 on a 6.83 dial . Oh well Back to the drawing board .
This week im looking into batteries , trying to line up a dyno session . I replaced the old fuse block with a modern blade type and ordered pistons and rings for the "old" yellow motor that came apart first of last season . I have all the parts in a pile in the garage and this thing was complete minus pistons and a balancer . 4.XXX ( whatever the block will clear up at I haven't asked ) x 3.800 stroke . I have already located a block and it is being machined . The pistons are gas ported with totals seal top ring and Napeir ( spelling) second ring all low tension style . This is surposed to be free horse power . They are being built flat top also so compression should be in the high 11's . The new fuel allows this increase and it is still $2 a gallon . Looking forward to the extra power .

Sounds good , you will like the Total Seal rings. Them suckers aint cheap though. Thats one reason I didnt want to do a complete tear down on mine last year.

Re: New project
Curious question for you, with the gas ported pistons and low tension rings would it help your engine by running a vacuum pump?

Re: New project
I have no idea . I was told the tension on the rings at rest would be enough to keep it (Compression)from bypassing the rings to the crankcase and that as the cylinder pressure increased the ring tension got higher . My intension was not max effort for sure . At this point I have no crack case evacuation , meaning I just run breathers with tennis bands around them. I really don't have room for a vacuum pump system without taking the inner fenders out . My machinist is a guy I went to high school with and is still in my home town. He went with me to my last race and really knows what im doing . I let him know that the main goal was to keep it simple . Load it , race it and put it up . I already work on it enough .

Re: New project
What about a pan-evac like this moroso kit on Summit? Cheap and time-tested.
I just dropped one in, haven't tested yet.

Re: New project
The vacuum pump might not be worth a bunch of power but it could still be beneficial to keep ring seal and longevity. On a big motor they can be worth 30hp on a small block I dont know. If you were to use a Moroso Pan -evac type deal. Put the exhaust fitting behind the muffler. Otherwise it will deposit oil in the mufflers.
On the vacuum pump a 3 vane Moroso would be fine. You will need a check valve so you can set it. That can be done on a scale ( ie x inches at x rpm) or just do a permanent in cab gauge.

What the heck is with all this bad luck of recent!!! Seems everyone is having a tough season!!
Hotrod you know there is times we go to the final round just because the stars all aligned and we were nothing but LUCKY,,, Didn't deserve it,, just everyone else was having a worse day than us! There is 'paybacks' and sometimes you have to be on the side of things just to keep the universe in order.
