I see where you welded the holes from the big tripod mirrors. Have you decided what mirrors your going with? I've got peep mirrors for mine, then I read on here that you can't see very much with them. I'll still use them, because I already have them.

I'm going with sport mirrors I have unless I find a really nice set of the original style ones cheap.

The build's coming along nicely, I just wish i had access to a welder. maybe then I'd be moving along with yours. Keep up the hard work, with the truck and the new baby.

Thanks. I feel blessed for all the help I've gotten from Glenn on this build.
Working on cleaning up the floor. Got the seam sealer cleaned up, took the bench seat out, got the rest of the padding ground off the floor and cleaned up the rest of the floor, and took the mismatched seatbelts out. Will have some pics later. Getting ready to spray rustoleum rusty metal primer on the floor and then top it with the paintable undercoating. Using it because Glenn recommended it (and gave it to me for free ) It dries hard vs a lot of the undercoating that stays sticky.....

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Well...I'm going to need some more undercoating But I think I can pick up a can tomorrow and spray it before a meeting I have.

First off, I saw this today while looking at paint products and decided it would be good to have in the garage. It's a long lasting extinguisher that is a point and spray can.

I'm thinking now I'll buy a can to keep in my car also in case I ever run across an emergency...

Here's the floor before I took the seatbelts out (bolts are loose in the pic

Here's the floor after some more grinding/wire wheeling and blowing it out...

Doesn't look as messy now

Here's the next step

Looking better

Then the undercoating

Looking better but ran out. Going to mask off the rockers and apply a second coat on the areas after I finish the first coat everywhere.

You'll never reget having a fire extinguisher. The floor is coming along great, It should last a long time now.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

I was reading on rustoleums site that the rusty metal primer doesn't work well on clean metal and that the clean metal primer works well on lightly rusted metal (like your well cleaned floor) as well as on bare clean metal. It mentioned something about the rusty metal primer needing the rust to make the paint adhere properly. I hope it works out well as you used it.

I will see if I can find the page I was reading and get the real data from it.

Thanks for looking out. I've actually used this primer several times on lightly rusted metal and even a completely cleaned frame with good results and nice durability. The floor is pretty heavily pitted at the front and still rust colored so I wanted something to stop the rust from deteriorating the metal.

Thanks, that's the plan...function over form on this one. Hopefully the floor should be solid and it'll look nice once the floor covering goes down.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

I called oreilly's which is the only place in town with more of the undercoating.....glad I did as the closest store is 25 minutes away and they didn't stock it...but they have three cans coming for me in the morning so I'll pick it up and get the rest of the floor sprayed sometime tomorrow.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Well, I got the rest of the undercoating...and got some cheaper undercoating for the underside of the cab.

Also found the herculiner bedliner kit for $49 with a $20 mail in rebate at Oreilly's. The quart size was 29 so I think I'm going to get a second full kit (need more than one kit for a longbed) and I'll use the leftovers to do the underside of the rear wheel tubs and the underside of the inner fenders.

So I finished the spots with less than half a can so I started going over the rest of the floor with a second coat. Put one and a half cans on tonight for a total of two and a half cans. I am happy with the look and of course it'll be covered by the mat anyways. ...but it should help with noise as the panels with the coating were already a lot quieter than parts of the same panel without coating when I first applied it.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

After spraying the floor I decided the air was already full of caustic fumes...so why not spray some carb cleaner....I have a fire extinguisher

SO...I decided to clean up the carb. I'll take it off the intake when I clean and paint the motor, but I felt like cleaning it up a bit tonight....figured I'd get a lot of the overspray off of the hoses and intake because somewhere years ago decided to just spray everything without masking obviously.

Here's the carb after I started...already looking a lot better....forgot to take a good closeup before picture...

I actually cleaned up more after that but forgot a pic....it'll get cleaned up more when it comes off for the engine paint so I'll get a good pic after that

While under the hood I took some pictures of all the cool original parts and stampings (at least I think they are cool )

water neck

Rad hose original clamp

Also got some new plug wires off the board to replace the horrible yellow ones.

And here's the floor after drying for a bit..

yes, used the grinder with the heavy duty grinding wheel to grind down the welds, then used the twisted cup with the grinder for a lot of the floor, and a wire wheel in the grinder for the hard to reach spots.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Looking back at the picture it looks like I see some of the primer showing through...I'll have to get it out in the light and use the last 1/2 can saturday if that's the case. Busy the next couple days including a trip Friday to pick up some parts at Top banana and pick up all the consoles Tim Christian sold me so I can restore them and make some more truck $$$
