Fuel pressure and throttle body response checked out good. When I originally went in and disabled the VATS I think I saved the changes but didn't re-write the tune to the Computer. Not surprising for me...

I had a problem with high idle RPM when I got the engine running. I tried a throttle position re-learn but still couldn't get it to idle down. I was talking to member KFF 1 and he said to look for a vacuum leak. I started checking closer and discovered that I had removed the EGR+EVAP Purge Solenoid valve and neglected to plug the hole. Having a hearing problem can make this kind of stuff hard to diagnose. As bad as it was I couldn't hear the vacuum leak. After inserting a rubber plug in the hole the engine idled down where it should be and ran great. Simple things you overlook can cause big headaches later.

After I bled the brakes and started the truck I found that the front disk brake calipers were stuck. The back tires would spin but the truck would not back up. I think they were pretty new but the truck they came off of had been sitting for a few years. The pads were definitely new, as were the rotors. I replaced the calipers and cleaned up the rotors today.

I moved the hubs/rotors front to rear while I had the wheels off and discovered that the outboard tie rod end on the passengers side was loose. It is the one on the right in the picture below. I replaced it with a good used one I had and it tightened it right up. I'm not the type of person to "just replace everything as long as I am in there" but if I find a bad part I will replace it. I also don't have a problem using good used parts.

I just keep chipping away at it when I have time.

Well, I think things are finally going my way.

I lost reverse gear while I was checking everything out the other day and it started shifting hard from neutral to drive. A P700 code came up on the scanner but that is a generic code that turns on the check engine light and refers you to check the codes set in the TCM (Transmission Control Module). After reading up on the code and probable causes for an hour or so, I decided to unplug all of the connectors to the TCM and transmission and check for any pins that might have backed out of the connector, might be bent, or other signs of a bad connection. The two connectors that plug into the NSBU (Neutral Start Backup switch on the outside of the transmission are glued in place and the sockets where they plug in have to be heated with a heat gun before you can unplug them, or plug them back in. All of the pins on the connectors looked good so I connected them all back up. Luckily I checked the main wire loom connector on the back of the transmission and found that it wasn't locked into the socket. I pushed the connector in until it locked and when I started the truck up everything worked as it should. Oh Happy Day!!!

I drove it around the yard so maybe when we get back this evening I will have the wife take a video of me driving it and post it on YouTube. I still have to weld the rear shock brackets on the rear axle housing and get the exhaust work done before I put the bed back on it.....

Here is a picture of the dirty pig. It has been sitting under the peach tree and the birds have been pooping on it. We haven't had any rain to wash it off so I guess I will have to wash it tonight...

get that video up! bet it sounds tough with no exhaust set up yet. for that hptuner stuff, did you buy it just for this swap? or you use it for multiple trucks? thought about getting it for mine so i can learn it, my suburban probably wont be my only ls swap i do so i figured i could get one

It sounds pretty good but the wind was blowing pretty hard so it is a little hard to hear.

I bought the HPTuners used and have used it to modify about 10 ECM's. I am still learning but there is a lot of info on line about it.

Got the rear shock brackets welded on today and the shocks installed. I need to wire brush the brackets and squirt some black paint on them. I also have an appointment to get the exhaust done on the 14th. I can't wait to get the bed put back on it.

The new tires are going to set me back a few bucks but I have been saving my pennies....

No I haven't. I still have some wiring to finish up as far as wrapping and routing. I will try and get that done in the next few days.

I am working on figuring out what I need for wheels on the rear of it today. The large center holes are too big on the wheels I have on it now, so there is no way to center the wheels. I found 4 16" wheels in my stash of 10 wheels that have the correct smaller size center hole in them and I have two of them bolted on the drivers side now. They look like they will work good. I will get them blasted, painted, and the new tires mounted on them as soon as I can.

Got the rear view mirror and the drivers side door mirror installed also. I will be putting short arm DG4's on it as soon as I can get a complete set put together.....

Some of you may recall that I used GM 454 exhaust manifolds on the 8.1 496 engine. There are a few slight modifications that need to be made to do that. One of them is to relocate the drivers side knock sensor. After doing some reading on this I found a solution that member "DirtyLarry" had posted and that was to use the sensor from another GM application. The sensor he used has a smaller mounting thread and it will screw into one of the unused threaded holes in the side of the block. The wire for the original sensor plugs into the replacement sensor with no modifications so that made it a really easy job.

The first picture below shows the difference in the two sensors and the part number of the replacement sensor is in the second picture. (213-298)

I dropped my wheels off at the sandblaster Wednesday night. He called me yesterday and said they were done. Now that's good service. First picture is after they were blasted and second and third pictures are after a couple of coats of Epoxy primer. I think I will go ahead and paint them grey. I ordered my rear tires and they are supposed to be here on the 13th..... 235 85 16 highway tires.

Leon, the wheels I've seen like those, were 16.5 inch wheels. I hope yours are 16's as you posted...

You had me worried for a while. It wouldn't be the first time I screwed up that way. I thought I had got rid of all the 16.5 dually wheels I had but you never know about me.....

I wasn't able to check until this morning and thankfully they are 16" wheels. I was pretty sure I had measured them when I first dug them out.

Most of the one ton stuff I've seen was from the 80's and 90's. All the 16.5 wheels I've seen look like yours...
Al the 16" wheels I've seen were drastically different. The 16's were flat where the hand holes were on the wheel. The 16.5 stuff was all curved like the wheels you have.

Of course I have not seen them all....

Are you going to weld up that clearance light hole on the bed, and officially make it 67 in appearance?

I was thinking about the side marker light holes last night while laying in bed. (that's why I have trouble sleeping at night... ..) I am not going to be in a hurry to weld them up. I may want to try something special for them.

I don't really do more than a lot of other guys and gals on here but I appreciate the Kudo's.
