Re: '63 GMC Project
very cool! shakey hand or not...how'd you achieve the rusty spots (patina), or is it just hand painted as well?

Quote:
Short bed fleetside. 9" lift, 62" tires, SBC 350, 4x4 (just had new hubs put in last summer) Posi rear (will look at the gears next summer when I am home). We got it because our 14 acres is 6 miles from the nearest paved road, and we get 4feet of snow in the winter up (down?) there. Awesome fun truck to drive. Is nice to be able to look truckers in the eye at stoplights

Re: '63 GMC Project
Thanks guys, and yes the patina was done with a brush.
The Beast looks killer! Just about the perfect amount of lift and the tires fit the lift perfectly, in my opinion.

Re: '63 GMC Project
I found some more pics online. These where on dropjawmag.com.
I don't remember where I found this one. I think it was Stylin' Trucks facebook page but I'm not sure. It was taken at a show they had in their parking lot. The red Sonoma next to my truck belongs to my friend.

Re: '63 GMC Project
Another member asked for pics of my Astro so here you go...
I've changed the corner marker since to a light with a black bucket. Haven't really touched the van for over a year. It needs reprimered/sealed and cleaned up, the wheels look horrible now. May get them and the grille powdercoated satin black. I also have a solid slider and a set of dutch doors for it if I ever get motivated.

Re: '63 GMC Project
I got the markers off ebay. Not the highest quality but I haven't had any problems with them. I don't think they're actually legal because they don't have reflectors in them but I've never been hassled by the police about them and I also have the same style on my daily driver S10. Where did you see my van before? Indy ITB maybe? astrosafri.com?

Re: '63 GMC Project
Thanks! The brake system is a CPP unit. The mounting bracket is from Captainfab here on these forums. I would think it would work on a 65. It came with brackets but they didn't fit my truck because the 63 GMC cab has extra holes drilled to use a 62 style hydraulic clutch.

Re: '63 GMC Project
I got mine from classiparts.com. They have different units for different applications. Mine is set up for 4 wheel disc brakes. The proportioning valve comes attached to the booster with a bracket.

Re: '63 GMC Project
Thanks man! I'm guessing you mean the rear of the van? I switched to a single steel leaf spring and a flip kit with an Airlift Ride Rite set. It was only going to be temporary but it's been about 6-7 years now. It rides like crap and doesn't give as much drop as I would like. I still plan on getting some sort of 4 link and a notch eventually. How about some pics of your van?

Re: '63 GMC Project
Not really. Just started driving it again now that the weather is getting nicer. I did have to fix one of my airlines going to the gauges because the fuse for the fan melted and got the line hot enough to cause a small hole in it. Still need to rewire the fans though. While the weather is nice this week I'm going to try to get it to an exhaust shop and get that finished up.

Re: '63 GMC Project
I took the truck to have the temporary exhaust replaced with some stainless tubing today. On the way home I passed by a police car going the opposite direction and when I looked in my rearview mirror I saw the dreaded police u-turn. I kept an eye on my mirror and my speedo but I wasn't speeding so I figured he was after me for a (very) loud exhaust. After about a half a mile I turned into a gas station, using hand signals because of course my signals stopped working, and he followed me in. When I got out of the truck the officer called me over to his patrol car and I was sure I was at least getting a warning for something. It turned out he just wanted to check out my truck because he has a 64 that he's s working on.

Re: '63 GMC Project
Thats awesome..! About 9 years ago when I had my 54 Chevy truck that was weathered blue with "Grumpy's Used cars & Speed Shop" on the doors, we were on the way to Columbus for Goodguys. Im rolling about 73 down the highway with wife following in her blazer. She kept yelling I was going too fast...lol I ended up passing a State Patrol and saw him turn and burn towards us. So I slowed some and he got almost but not even with me and stayed there for 3-4 miles. Then slowed and snuck in behind me and turned lights on. So my wife is pissed and yelling thru our portable radio's. He comes up on passenger side and says... Going to Goodguys? I say yep!, and he stood there asking about my truck for 10 minutes. Never asked for license or anything. Purely wanted to see my truck up close... That was best experience ever being pulled over...

Re: '63 GMC Project
That's awesome too! Now if I could just get the hot lady cops to pull me over to check it out...

Re: '63 GMC Project
I did a quick photochop to add some 20s and while I was at it I tried out putting yellow lights where the high beams are, sorta' like an older race car. I like the rims and I'm on the fence about the yellow lights. What do you think?

Re: '63 GMC Project
love the rims, but with that awesome patina I think I almost like the idea of wide whites on your black rims more.
same on the yellow. I like them knowing what they are, but at a quick glance would they just look old and aged ? I think the cleanness of your chrome/front end, etc just makes the patina that much more badass. |
