Re: 59 Chevy Build

Prostreeter,Im fairly new to the forum and I am glad this thread popped back up on page 1. I read it today and I am very impressed. You are a true craftsman.
I am going to put a big block in my 56 as well. I noticed you used the stock firewall. Any helpful hints on using the stock firewall?
I have been looking at Sanderson headers. Are yours the BB4 blockhuggers?
You mentioned a leakage problem with the headers. Did Sanderson take care of you OK?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

There are some challenges associated with using the stock firewall w/a big block. First I would suggest that you set everything up using a short water pump. I used a long one and had to find a special, thin, electric fan that would fit in the little space I had to work with. If you are planning on using a "pusher" fan this isn't as critical; however, I perfer a "puller" fan for better cooling. When I first set the motor on the frame rails I tucked it up pretty tight to the firewall. This proved to be more problematic and therefore I decided to cut it loose and move it another 3/4" forward. (when you get to this point I will be happy to give you the measurements off of mine. As far as the headers, they are the full length C6's. Fit great, just make sure that you allow 30 - 60 days for delivery. They are not quick on getting them to ya, but worth the wait. I highly recommend using the MII setup from fatman's. Very easy to install and I know it works well with the BB.

I hope this helps a little. If you need anything additional please don't hesitate to ask. Bob

Thanks for the tips. I havent bought any pulleys and brackets so now I know to look for the short pump stuff. I havent seen the C6 headers before, the angle of the collector threw me off. I thought they were more perpindicular with the frame. I like the looks of them, they look top quality. I better get my order in. When I set the motor I will be bugging you.
Thanks again

I don`t know if this helps but my buddy had a 55 that he installed a camaro clip on and started out with a 327. He dropped the 427 right in with the stock firewall and didn`t have to cut anything but I seem to remember him "dimpling" the corners of the cove so the valve covers would clear.

What made you decide to get rid of the red truck? I thought this one was to pull the red one?

Re: 59 Chevy Build

Well I finished up the blower install today and I am dying to take it for a test drive, but, I am having a problem with the pressure side of the steering pump heating up real bad. It got so bad while test running it that it blew the hose and needless to say, power steering fluid went all over the motor and everywhere else you could imagine.........what a mess. Anyway here are a few shots of the motor after we cleaned up the mess............

Re: 59 Chevy Build

Can't tell you the model but I remember seeing little power steering fluid coolers at the junk yard. I'm at work and don't have any car catalogs here but I think Summit has some aftermarket ones for PS and rearends too. Bummer about the mess...

Re: 59 Chevy Build

Just went through the whole thing. Looks awesome. Can't believe the red one is gone. Well if I had to pick one; I like the black one better anyway. At least through a computer screen.

I'm waiting to work on my 57. Still trying to get my 70 together. As well as trying to get my old mans lo buck 55 on the road. ..... speaking of that, its out in the shop calling my name right now. Anyway. Love it. And, for gods sake don't have any momentary laps in judgment with this on and find yourself without this one as well.... KEEP YOU HEAD ON MAN!!
