Thanks for the information on the Dana 44 in your K10 too.

Not sure if the calipers are different for the 1" and HD 1 1/4" rotors, if their is a difference the piston bore may be bigger. Will find out more tomorrow, going to parts stores and will look at the calipers. Will have my originals back too.

Also, putting all new seals in the T221, along with resealing the cover plates too. Most are leaking a little.

Les--be careful with the ones with shims. and use thin gasket mat like the org ones. I also after it was back together i put a bead of sealer around each cover plate. these are tough to keep from weeping.

Thanks for the heads-up on resealing the T221. The shaft seals are "CR" 17386 and shifter " National" 480954. They came from shop in MN, that does a lot of 4x4 work. He also warned me about the shims, go slow, "no impacts- breaks the cover", hand wrench only.

Going to try double seals on the shafts per suggestion.

Got the front calipers to work, just needed to trim a little nub at the top and bottom with cut off wheel. Now on to brake hoses, looking hard at P vans.

Kimble do you like a 90 degree or 45 line on the banjo connection, does the 90 make for a shorter hose connection?

Rockwell T221


The Rockwell T 221 seals and gaskets have been replaced/ resealed. Used Permatex Gasket Maker. It works really well. Put a little bit on surfaces where the seals go, to prevent any leakage around the outside of the seals, which happens sometimes. Did install the double seals on the output/input shafts. All the seals were original from 1964. The small shifter seals were almost gone, just touch them and they came apart. The inside looked and felt good, should run a lot more. Did not clean the inside with solvent, concerned bearing could be compromised. Did drain for a day, and flushed with one quart of fresh grease. Photos of the original shaft seal below, it is a one piece double seal.

Also installing Spicer magnetic fill and drain plugs, part number 064254, they are 3/4 pipe thread .

Another photo of drain plug. Also grease I am using, it is a little heavier, should be ok as not driving in cold weather. Using it as it is for bigger heavy duty trucks and has more additives for wear/pressure.

Interesting you are using the heavier lube, is that a usual practice for this transfer case?

Probably overkill, however, not a lot more expensive. Since not using in cold weather, the extra wear protection additives may help.

Your T221 looks nice too. Mine was a little worn in a few place, but overall good and bearings were all tight.

Selling our house and moving to a smaller one, hope to get back working on it later this week.

As mentioned about, selling our home and have been thinning stuff out, a lot. Also, was under the weather for a little bit.
Back at it now, cleaning up a bunch of bolts and brake/fuel line fasteners right now. Almost done with welding on bell housing for the NV4500 too. Hope to get the trans in before moving to new, much smaller garage!!

Brakes and brake lines next. Ordered a set of new brake line, not correct for "K" trucks, going to send originals for them to copy.

The engine is making some slow progress too.

Plan to get back posting soon, after we close on selling our home.

Glad to hear all is well Les. I am looking at having to move to a different home so that I can keep my projects and parts stash. New regulations at my shop prohibit any outside storage. I'm not looking forward to the move.

les--looking forward to the rest of your build. Moving isn't fun as you probably know lol. smaller garage, good or bad. just add a shed outside. I worked out of a 2 car garage for 23yrs and tried to keep the wife's car in it most of the time.

Have not figured out the garage space, yet. Definitely vehicles will have to stay outside for a while. And will likely insulate the garage walls and doors too, along with adding 220 volt power outlets. The good news is that their is a large basement with garage access through double doors only half a level down. So basement has all the hand tools, tool box, parts storage, some machines, and work bench. Welder will likely be in garage, air compressor and media cabinet not sure - leaning garage for noise,
Also, using current garage to the last day we own.

Sorry for your move too, sounds like very stringent ordnance, you are facing not grandfathering you or not allowing fence to meet their new objective. Hopefully the move will have some benefits for you.

Some progress lately, a little time on the truck now and then. Still working on getting settled in our new to us home,and it will take a while. Mainly working on small parts cleaning and coating. First remove the crud and rust, then surface prepare them for ceramic coating, in media cabinet using Aluminum oxide 120 grit. Immediately after surface prep, apply the ceramic coating in dry air.

Use an aluminum sheet to hold the bolts, drill and tap it to fit the different bolt sizes.

Cab Clutch and Brake Pedal Springs

The springs look like they were painted a green color before cleaning. After cleaning the color looks gray, the cleaner/rust remover solution may have changed the color. Not sure which color they were, kind of leaning toward the green. Photos below show before cleaning and after. The before photos do not show the green color very well, it is more visible looking at the springs.

Hood Hinge Bolts

The hood hinge bolts have a different washer (GM has a name for them) and are correct for 65', 64'....?, 66' uses a flat washer. These have a head marking of "ELH" with circles around the ELH. The lencth of threads is 3/4". Have seen others with an anchor figure.

The group is 8.016, part number 3846202 ,sup by 3744646, and listed as hex hd 5/16-18 x 7/8 and another reference listed as 3/8-16 x 3/4 with 8.391 lock washer for the other mounting.

Note: Certain Chevrolet parts catalogs have a bolt section appendix, that lists their GM name, size description,, w or wo washer, illustration, and part number. I will list a reference later. ( sure wish we had a longer time edit posts).

Making indirect progress for the most part currently. Starting to build a 8x16' storage shed, to move a bunch of stuff out of the garage.

Did have some fun saturday, picked up a sport bumper with rock guards, mounting brackets, license plate bracket and light. Nice condition and straight bumper. Also got custom bed molding, and fleetside braces. It will likely be for a fleet side short bed in the future.
