Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Still cleaning up the rear frame & suspension. Getting ready to pull off the bed but I couldn't resist removing the stock coils and setting in the 5" drop coils just to check the look before tear down. I'm likin' it.

After another 8 hour day crawling around on the concrete, the engine compartment prep is finally complete. If all goes well final finish will go on first thing tomorrow.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Worked on the new bed wood from Classic Parts today. Whiteoak for the short step. Very pleased with quality! 1st pic is after the Minwax pretreat and conditioner. 2nd is after staining w/Early American Minwax. Spar Poly next and it'll be finished!

The simple answer is I go through a lot of 97 cent drop cloths! A couple of years ago I painted the entire truck in the same spot. It’s just a regular two car attached garage, but most of it is pretty well organized. I figure if I can’t find something when I need it there really isn’t any point in hanging on to it. So when it comes to painting cars or furniture I just cover everything up:

For this project there really wasn’t much overspray because I decided to paint the engine compartment with Raptor bed liner. I wanted something textured and durable that wouldn’t chip when I piled wrenches on the inner fenders, would look different but hot rod appropriate, and would require very little maintenance. For a long time I considered painting the engine compartment in Zolatone which was popular back in the 60’s, but it isn’t rust proof or nearly as durable. As of a month ago I was going to shoot it in gloss black enamel, until I saw a couple of other projects covered in the stuff, and found some favorable reviews. I’ve also had great results with other UPOL products.

After about 40 hours of prep, I finally shot it this morning and by this afternoon had everything back together with the engine running. All that’s left now is to tie up the driver side wiring, repaint the hinges and springs, and get the hood back on.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I put a new guage cluster from Dolphin in and replaced the 15 year old 5" round outside mirrors with the larger rectangle ones from Classic Parts. My old eyes are not what they used to be.

The only things painted were the firewall and inner fenders. They’ve been a mess for a number of years. The outside remains Blitz Black. It’s hard to photograph the details with all the dark dull surfaces. I made another attempt this morning and got a different shot that better shows the texture. I also reinstalled the original cowl vent until I can rework/repaint the other one.

I hope you didn't patent that... Cuz sue me, but I'm going to copy! That looks great. What did you spray it with?

UPOL Raptor Bed Liner. A lot of people buy it from TP Tools. I was in a hurry so I bought mine locally and paid more for it. Make sure you get the kit complete with the gun. The threads are unique to UPOL bottles. I have a 3M Schutz gun but it won't screw onto the UPOL containers.

Thanks. I'm going to order some. I'm right in the middle of prepping the engine bay for the new motor and this is perfect timing!
