Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Mounted my outer grille. Excellent shape considering it's 20 years old. It's an OEM replacement. Purchased that and the inner for $200 new. Hopefully my wife is as happy with it as I am. There are a few light scratches. One minor ding in the upper right, but it's a simple fix. Beings the black needs to be repainted, I may as well do it right.....Strip it all down and clear coat.

Note: Ha, it is a spare bedroom. I'm not THAT bad..............Need the space.

Finished fitting the cab corner, welded it up and ground welds. Also I had to cut the front A pillar fender mount off. The fender stuck out too far with the reproduction bracket. I trimmed the original one down and welded it on. The fender sits flush with the rocker now. To say one has to finesse these repop sheet metal parts is an understatement!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Had a wheel bearing go out last Saturday (3/12/16). Took about 2 hours to get the truck towed the 12 miles home. Don't ask. Popped front passenger side wheel cover and dust cap off and had all the bearing cylinders fall on the ground, a few were in pieces. Bearing cylinder cages looked like someone had taken a can opener to them. After the caliper was removed, I could almost remove the hub assembly without even touching cotter pin and castle nut.
The spindle washer is no where near flat and is also missing the tang that engages the spindle relief. The grease had completely melted away and some had cooked itself on to the backing plate and rotor. Oh,I forgot to mention that the tire guy mounted my two new front tires with his air impact.(gotta love speedy service.) After snapping one of my socket adapters on the first lug but, I used a 4' snipe on my OE wheel nut wrench, which worked after all 200 lbs. Of me literally jumped up and down on the end. Resulting in rounding all 10 front lug nuts off, and breaking a wheel stud that the PO had arc welded back into the hub once before...
2 hours of chipping, scraping, wire brushing, and degreasing later, its cleaned. That one spindle washer is not stocked by any of the big chain stores, direct from manufacturer order only, takes 2 days, and costs $19.82. Yup, $20 for a washer. Today was the first day back at it after $300 for new rotors, new pads, new, lug nuts, new inner/outer bearings, new seals, new spindle washer, cotter pin assortment pack, and can of hi-temp wheel bearing grease. Rubber hose ends on order also, one of them will be here in 3 days, add another $50...
Got the one bad side done. Focused on what was unknown versus doing the side that's not damaged and will go back together pretty quick. Spent about an hour filing and sanding the spindle back into tolerance to get the bearing to slide back on. Confident in the results, won't find out until Sunday night when I drive it down the road tho. Also seen how bad my trans pan leaks, gonna regasket and filter that tomorrow since its up on Jack stands and no wheels.

Finished up the rocker panel and dressed down the welds this morning.
If I had to do this stuff for a living, I'd be a starvin marvin. Pass side took me a week.

Just put the pistons and camshaft in my 350 for my C/10. Slowly but surely the rebuild is coming.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I've been doing some little things while I am waiting for the wood bed to get finished that need done. While the rear bumper is off I polished it up, and removed some light surface rust pitting on the underside with Coke and aluminum foil. I also restored the license plate holder, and all brackets - then painted with POR 15 top coat. Great paint!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Over the weekend I picked up this 400ci. To replace the 307 in my 71k.
Tonite i finished stripping the unnecessary stuff off of it and got it drained in preparation of turning it over and popping off the oil pan too have a look.

I would like too dress it with all the swp stuff off the 307
I'm not sure if the pulleys will line up with the thicker balancer...I'll find out soon enough.

Never noticed 400's are not drilled for a clutch ball stud...this one will be

I'm surprised to see rock auto has 400 flywheels for under $70.

Smile Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Crawled underneath to check out why my rear diff. Is leaking pretty good. Leak seems to be at pinion seal.(I threw rear u-joint back in december,Related??) Rubber around carrier bearing moves side-to-side inside housing. Pulled rear diff. Fill plug to check level, was about half pint low. Topped her off and installed new pipe plug, old one was square drive and wallowed out, had a brand new hex drive plug from my recent water pump replacement.

Jacked up rear end to pull and wash wheels checking for wheel cylinder/diff. Leaks. Everything looked good, shot them with brakekleen, rotated tires, retorqued them, and since I was there, replaced brake hard line Tee retaining nut that always seems to be missing every time I look under there.(SS flat washer, and nylock should solve that...)

Replaced #6 plug wire that I "repaired" about a week ago in parking lot after work. Rerouted wires a lil better from headers.

Adjusted adjustable vacuum can, just recently started experimenting with the can after I found out it was adjustable.(when I had dist. Out about two weeks ago I operated the rod with a screwdriver and varnished, old gasoline spewed onto my work bench. The entire can was full!) More than likely gonna pick up that "Proform HEI Tune-Up Kit" from auto zone next paycheck, and have a distributor that I know exactly what's inside it.(no-name,no part numbers, nothing on my current one.) Started, idled, ran, and rode better than it did this morning.

Thank You! They are currently filthy from my 1 year old playing in "his truck"! I spent a lot of time deciding what to run, as I had Buddy Buckets in my last truck and loved them but couldn't bring myself to spend the money. I am very happy with how they look and feel!

Got my cab floor in finally! Floor fit pretty well, worst area is where I need to cut it out for the high hump so no big deal.

Here is the truck with the cab on the chassis

Doors on

And last on with it aired out
