I got one more thing checked off the to-do list yesterday. Here recently Alan and I fished the brake lines through the frame for the intial fit up. I bought a complete set from Inline Tube a year or so ago and I was worried that I would have an issue with them fitting well. I know several members had issues using them, but it looks like I got lucky and got a good set. I ordered a set of stainless extended brake hoses from Off Road Design last week and they finally showed up. If anyone is needing some extended hoses for a lifted truck these are some pretty nice pieces and would recommend them to anyone.

I test fitted them and everything seemed to fall into place. The picture below is kind of deceiving, because it makes the hose looks short, but there is a good bit of slack in the hose that the picture doesn't show.




Once I get my fuel tank installed permanently and the fuel line plumbed in I'll go through and mount the fuel and brake lines to the frame. As it is now they are just "floating" in the frame.

I'm currently waiting to get my cab back from the sandblaster. Hopefully I can pick it up this weekend if it's done. Then the real work starts and hopefully some noticeable progress to post about.

Thanks Heath. Like everyone that ever started a frame off, I wish I was further along than I am, but it'll get there...hopefully. If you and your son want to come and lend a hand feel free to. Lord knows I need all the help I can get.

Great progress and please keep those pics coming. I plan to use a few of your well placed shots when I get around to putting mine back together very soon.

I am close to purchasing my brake lines very soon and I plan on buying the offroaddesign.com set you have. But if you had it to do all over again would you still buy the Inline tube set or go with someone else?

Shawn if I can help you with anything let me know.

Overall I'm happy with the Inline Tube lines. There are a few areas that needed tweaking, but nothing too bad. The only thing left that I'm "concerned" with now is the lines that mount to the prop valve on the master cylinder. I won't know if they mount up properly for a while, being that I don't have my cab ready yet.

Well I turned a major corner in my build this weekend. The blaster called me first thing Saturday morning to tell me that my cab was finished. When we originally dropped it off to the blaster Alan and I had discussed hauling it to his work to prime it in their paint booth. Due to prior obligations Alan and I both couldn't get away until late Saturday afternoon. We got everything loaded up and headed out about 6pm. After chewing the fat with the blaster and stopping for a quick bite to eat we got to Alan's shop around 8pm. We got everything unloaded and immediately went to work.

I started by stripping the seam sealer off the cab that the blaster couldn't get off.



Alan jumped in when I was done with that and started blowing the sand out of the cab.



We then rolled the cab into the booth and setup stands for my hood, tranny cover, and cowl.



Alan setup his paint gun and he turned me loose shooting primer.





This was not fun



We finally finished up around 12:30 or so. Alan then turned on the heat for a little while to make sure everything was good and dry before we loaded it all back up and hauled it home.



We finally rolled in about 1:15 Sunday morning. We rolled the cab into basement and called it a night. Of course, Sunday morning when we woke up my wife said do you smell paint? Oh well what do you do.

Many thanks goes out to Alan for helping me get to this stage of my build and for hanging in there with me until 1am Sunday morning.

Thanks Michael. It gave me new hope seeing it all one color (bare metal) when I went and picked it up Saturday. It's a pretty solid cab for the most part. The only major problem areas are the wiring gutter and the area around the fresh air vents. There was a good bit of rust in the cowl in that area as well. We've talked about making new patches for those areas, but we won't know what direction to go in for sure until we start cutting metal. I even kicked around the idea about buying one of these, but I might just save that as a last resort.

That is why I opted for a detached garage when we built our current house. Congrats on primer. It must feel good to see the cab back home and know where all the problem spots are.

Hey Shannon, it's looking great man. When I looked and compared both brake setups that are on my two trucks, it looks as though it's hooked up different from my 71' with Discs and 70' with drums. My 71' is the one apart, and I don't think the 70' would have worked for ya for a pic. Trevor

I'll admit I was a little concerned about what I was actually getting back from the blaster. The cab looked pretty solid, but sandblasting can always change that pretty quick.

I was so excited about getting my cab back from the blaster. I totally forgot about the box of parts that he powdercoated for me as well. I had him coat everything in 60% gloss.





On a side note, do they repop the (2) rubber bumpers for the pedal stops? I broke one of mine taking it out of the bracket and the other one is dry rotted pretty bad.

Gotta love shipping companies and the way they handle packages with care, especially when they're labeled with a big "fragile" sticker. I can't believe the driver left it that way. I would've at least tried to stuff the contents back in the box. Luckily nothing was damaged.







While I had the cab here at home I decided it would be a good time to mount the cab to the frame to check the basement door for clearance. I was really worried that with the 4" lift it wouldn't fit in the basement. Alan and I set the cab on the frame and then pushed it inside the garage door (my fingers were crossed the entire time).






















It fits........








......granted it doesn't have the 33's on it at this point, but once the sheet metal gets added to it and I get a chance to drive it and flex the suspension really good it should settle enough to hopefully clear the garage door even with the 33's. That's what I'm telling myself at this point anyway.



At least it's starting to look like a truck again.....kinda.






The next area of concern was the clearance between the firewall and valve covers and the hei distributor. I actually had to remove the distributor just to get the cab mounted, it was that tight. I don't think I can run a hei at this point without doing some major work to the firewall. I know alot of guys use a BFH to get the clearance they need to run a hei, but I don't think I could beat my firewall enough to get it to fit. Alan mentioned cutting the firewall and grafting in a piece of metal to get the clearance I need. That might be an option if I can't find a cheap, small cap internal coil distributor.


There is about 1/4" of clearance behind the passenger side valve cover and the firewall.



The driver's side has a little more clearance, but not much more.




Things are starting to come together finally. Bodywork is right around the corner.
