Re: Mike's 50

KansasT
I used this information from the manual that came with connect and cruise

"Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
NOTE: It is critical that the MAF sensor is mounted per the
instructions below. Vehicle performance and/or driveability may be
affected if it is not mounted as recommended.
The Mass Air Flow Sensor must be installed in the induction system using
the supplied MAF sensor mounting boss. The induction system should
be 4 inches in diameter and have a minimum straight section 6 inches
in length. Mount the MAF sensor in the middle of the straight induction
section, ensuring that the middle of the mounting boss is at least
10 inches from the throttle body.
The MAF sensor must be oriented correctly in the induction
Be sure to weld the mounting boss correctly – the sensor will only
mount one way in the boss (see diagram).
Weld the boss in place before installing the sensor. When installed in
the vehicle, the MAF sensor should be mounted with the connector end
pointing between horizontal and fully upright – do not mount with the
connector oriented downward."

Re: Mike's 50

Mike, I'm a little late to the game. I think you've got some great responses in regards to the issue at hand. 80psi is definitely way to high for a stock LS3, that's close to 5.5 bar, way over the 4 bar (58psi) needed for the LS style fueling. No matter what, however, it's going to be smelly without cats, I see you're in CA but didn't see any in the last picture posted. That pump is huge for a stock engine and will flow more volume than it will ever need, but the regulator should be doing its job. Might just be a bad one.

You've put together quite a ride, very nice work! Lots of attention to detail.

Re: Mike's 50

OutlawDrifter,
I know I went over board on the pump but did it with intention in the future of adding power, supercharger, etc.
My first thought was bad Wix filter, replaced with AC Delco, and this is the 2nd of the AC Delco.
I know with out cats it will "stink" but this is eye watering.
Thank you for the compliment.

I figured you were "future proofing it". Meant no disrespect in my comments, just talking it out.

I'm a big proponent of Wix filters, and generally use them over AC Delco. Might just need the better regulator set up as suggested.

That's the info I've seen too. When talking with the guy at tech support he suggested that the instructions are misleading. It really needs to be further away, because of the 90 degree elbows that are used on most swaps. He recommended the use of the GM air intake pipe (19301246), which uses a larger radius bend. Last I checked that pipe wasn't available, but it is pictured in the GM performance catalog. Another option would be to have a local tuner reprogram the ECM to correct for the MAF location.

Mike,, I think I remember a few weeks ago someone on here on the ls swap side was having issues with the 340 pump pressure and aeromotive told them he needed to use their regulator...can't remember who it was

Re: Mike's 50

Outlaw, I didn't mean any disrespect either and none taken. I'm taking all this advise and going use it and respect all you guys.
I've been a strictly Volvo tech for 28 years with a little experience with other makes and none with the LS. Kansas, I will look into moving ANN. I figure 1 step at a time, get Fuel PSI to specs first then if still a problem I will see what I need Next.
I have UP Tuners on my list of purchases soon. I see that there are gains with some tuning, and I would really like to learn it.

Mongocanfly,
I was told by Aeromotive that the corvette filter a 340 killer. Not sure exactly that meant but figured they wanted nothing their components used together

Re: Mike's 50

New Holley fuel filter/Regulator assemblies arrived today. Its designed for LS transplants. Fully rebuildable, filter replaceable, It's big also.
10 micron filter, and set to 59.5 psi and flows plenty according to specs.
Hope to get in this weekend.

I'm going to get it weighed tomorrow morning to finish title and registration process, then on to Insurance.

What are you all dong for insurance? agreed value, companies?

Re: Mike's 50

If the connect and cruise stuff uses a tune like the factory LS3, there is a lot of improvement to be had in the fuel and spark tables.

When I had the 6.0l in my 2500HD tuned, it amazed me how much was left on the table. It feels like it it has the advertised 380hp now.

Re: Mike's 50

Well I haven't updated in a little bit. I got my plates in the mail last night. The last couple weeks I have been doing little things and not much worthy of update or pictures.
I have been playing with the tune using HPT tuners to try an get it better, work in progress.
I will be making my first trip home today in the truck.
I have put nearly 20 miles on it around the shop area.

I really like this cooler and love the truck! Do you happen to remember the p/n of the cooler? Summit has a handful of them....

Thanks!

Re: Mike's 50

Scott the number from Summit was Der-15850.
I've just started driving and using data from TCM it is showing temps in the 200-215 or so range so far. I haven't been in high heat but slower traffic in the 80's. I also have not mounted the right side running board so could be getting extra air.
I plan on talking to my transmission guy about temps, the GM program shows red in the 240* range

200-215 is pretty warm without working it. Might want to look into that. My 2500HD and Suburban rarely get over 175.

Mike - thanks! It's great to see your truck running and driving - you're giving me new inspiration! I keep going back thru your thread - you did a great job and the info is really helpful.

On the cooler - I see there is at least one larger size as well - any reason you picked this one - maybe fit? Your tranny does seem to be running hot - I doubt it's the cooler sizing but I also did not see how you routed the lines. Did you loop through the radiator and the cooler both?

Also another question - from your post 218 - your brake pedal looks a bit high and you were going to adjust for clearance to the column. Where did you end up with it on height from the floor? Mine is currently at about 8" and feels too high. I am thinking about scavenging a pedal arm from the u-pick yard and lowering it a couple of inches. Thoughts on this?

Thanks again - great build and love to see it running!

Re: Mike's 50

Scott, Thanks. I did not run cooler thru radiator.
I haven't changed brake pedal. I don't feel it is to high, not enough clearance between gas and brake pedal. I was planning on moving pedal pad over to the left for clearance.

Re: Mike's 50

Haven't post in a little bit.
I have been driving the truck and for the most part problem free so far.
I got 750 miles on it, still knocking things off the list. Have a lot to do still.
Took it to a local free show Saturday. didn't really take many pictures.
It was HOT! alot left early and I heard alot didnt even come because of the heat.

Mike - how's the temp now that you've got some more miles on the truck?

Re: Mike's 50

Scott2
It still runs up to 190-200ish depending on how I drive and also most of the driving I do is stop and go commute traffic.
I figure it would be the same aprox. as coolant temp if run thru the radiator cooler since coolant temp runs in the 200-205 range while in traffic.

Not sure if I will move it yet or not. I think if I wrap the exhaust that might help some also.

over 1325 miles and only issue so far was running out of gas once, and also had a failure of throttle system yesterday and had no pedal response, cleared throttle position sensor code and running fine again so far.
Settling on the right alittle more than right side so I will swap shocks left to right
