Great work on these. I will be making do with Walmart seat covers for quite some time into the future, haha. But I enjoy window shopping.

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
Are they wool? That's good to know. I figured they were made out of whatever was in the leftover yarn bin, with the color stripes added for good measure. I never get too snuggly with them so I don't think the itchy part ever registered, haha.

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
Well the old ones were, back in the day. Not sure about these new ones. All I know is that they shed a lot. I hate when I get a core seat to strip down, and one of those are on there. I’m sneezing for the next several hours.

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
Got a core seat this weekend. Stripped it down, but the only useable parts are going to be the tracks & seat back. And those need repairs. The seat back bar has broken away from the hinge. This is a common issue that I always get repaired.
The bottom frame was too badly rusted, and had a crack damn near all the way thru the frame. The grid and foam were all trashed too. You’ll never believe all the problems that these seats have hiding under the cover. This is exactly the reason why I restore and repair EVERYTHING on the seat. Not just throw a pretty cover on what’s there, which is what a lot of upholstery shops do.

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
TKCR-
Couple questions for ya. I love your work BTW! I was watching a Youtube Video from USA1. They say there is a basic seat and an premium seat. The basic came in the lower trims (Custom Deluxe) and the springs under the foam curve upwards thus requiring a thinner foam pad. Is this true and does that cause the seat to be "bouncier?" My 86K20 is a Custom Deluxe and it rides like a buggy. The lower foam pad that USA1 sells doesn't seem to say if its one version or the other. Regarding seatbelts. They sell the 3 point kits but without the plastic cover for the retractor. Do you know if my OEM covers fit their retractor mechanisms? Thanks! |

Totally different frame and foam on the 81-87, and there is only one foam. There is no basic or premium. Like I said above, they were referring to the 73-80 seats only. If you have an 86, its only the one foam, and it’s full foam. Just make sure your seat is actually an 81-87 seat or a 73-80. Trust me, people assume their seat is correct for the year of their truck. But at anytime, someone could have swapped the seat. Easiest way to tell, the 81-87 seat has the holes in the seat for the seatbelts that come up thru the foam. The seat adjuster is in the front of the seat. The 73-80, the adjuster is on the left side of the seat. And as far as the aftermarket seatbelts, stay away from them. And no they won’t fit in your casing. They aren’t even dual retractors, they are only one. So they don’t work very well.

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
I’ve had quite a few seat back frames that have been broken at the hinge, some on both sides! So I took them all to my welder friend, and he got them all welded back up for me.

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
All the seat back frames are back together! All the foam had to be glued back together, where I had to peel them back so they could be welded. Also repainted the hinges, and frames.

Front Standard Bucket Seats. Includes Hog Rings, Hog Ring Pliers and Instructions. The 1988 and newer models have some of the original seat upholstery heat laminated to the foam making it very difficult to remove the old upholstery. Our seat kits for these models do not require the removal of this laminated upholstery. Our sets will go right over the original and hog ring where the original seat cover is attached.

Early spring I built a couple of Burgundy seats for someone’s CrewCab. Today he sent pics, he has his interior all back together. Wow! It looks nice!

Re: Bench Seats, Having them Reupholstered
Just put together a fully restored Blue Velour Deluxe BenchSeat. This will be packed and heading to Texas. Here’s a close up of the frame, springs, tracks and foam. Everything gets sandblasted of the surface rust and repainted. Tracks are chemical dipped to remove rust, then relubed. They slide, and look new! A good original foam is being used on this seat. Springs & grid are all tightened. All the plastics have been cleaned & restored also.
There’s been some discussions on some of the FB Groups concerning seats being recovered. My thoughts are on the subject, if your going to pay out that kind of money, you should get more than just a pretty new cover. These seats have a lot of issues hiding under that cover, and I address them. One being the rust! I ask, would you take your truck to paint and just have them put a pretty new paint job on it, without fixing the rust? Well I would hope not, because the rust will just continue to grow. All that money & time is just going to go to waste.
